I am one of the people that have watched this topic for a long time, to look for a replacement of my 2009 mac mini. Well I do not think that I will replace it again with a new mac mini. For two reasons. The first one is that it took them so long to release an other mac mini, that my situation will change in the near future (graduation from university). Right now my iPad is good enough to take with me to classes, but I cannot be sure that an iPad will be good enough when (if) I find work in the near future. Secondly, I am not wanting to go to this hell of waiting and disappointment again. So instead of a mac mini, I will probably go for a macbook (which one, I am not yet sure of), when I do actually have money (life as a student does not pay). I still hope for you guys that there will be a new mac mini... but it does not look like there will be one anytime soon...

Anyone replace their mini with the intel NUC? Not only do they smoke the mac mini, you can get them with the latest kaby lake and with 32gb ram. For 1/3rd the price of the macbook pro I'm thinking about getting one of these for my work machine. They also have cheap NUC setups for people who still are using a mac mini on their tv.

They're trying to make desktop users look old, dated, pushed to the side and stupid. If Apple had any balls they'd do what many companies do and suggest alternatives or make Mac OS available on other platforms but that requires more work than continuing the brand which apparently now no longer includes desktop.

I would not even tell anyone right now that I'm a Mac enthusiast ... in fact I'm not enthusiastic at all about the foreseeable Mac future. When I look at Tim I don't see any visions - no plans - just meaningless smiles and gilded pocketbooks behind new iterations of the iPhone and iPad.

Ever wonder what their development teams use at home? I would love to talk with one of them and ask - "what are you going to do for a real computer going forward?"

I think the "mini killer" to get is the HP Z2

Have you actually used one of these? How is the quality? I have two HP computers and am not very impressed. One is a two year old basic tower machine that works fine and was reasonably priced. But everything about it looks and feels cheap. The other is a 6 year old Windows 7 tablet with a pressure sensitive that looks very slick but it's terrible. Underpowered CPU, terrible touch screen and the stylus never worked right.

Maybe these are just bad examples, I know HP made some really nice things in the past. But I'm not too anxious to buy another one now. And anyway, I want a Mac. :)

HP makes some of the best professional workstations around. A lot of the people on the Mac Pro forum have invested in them.

:) Man, I remember back in the good old days, all the crappy updates were presented endlessly one by one up on stage, just so that at the end of an hour Steve could turn around and say "Oh, and one more thing..."

They haven't done anything worthy of a keynote since 2012. They sound so douchy now and even in retrospect. "You won't believe how impressed you're about to be with this and we feel you are going to just love it"

I remember purchasing my second G5 and the possibilities seemed endless - I invested in a custom rig - rackmounted the G5 with isolation, power conditioning and added cooling - with upgrades I bet it would still be cranking today then the "trash can" came out and from that moment I knew I'd never build another custom rig - I just didn't realize it would be this bad.

Here you go

After I gave up waiting on Apple to update the Mac mini, I replaced my 2010 model with an HP ProDesk 600 workstation and I replaced my MacBook with an HP Spectre laptop late last year. Both are fantastic machines of great build quality. The Spectre's keyboard is far superior (in my opinion) to that of the MacBook. The ProDesk just has so much more expansion options than the Mac mini ever did that I'm quite happy with both of them.

Really? I tell everyone.

I am a Mac enthusiast. Therefore I advice you don't buy one now. Updates are almost certainly coming.

I have been waiting patiently to buy a new mac mini for a long time but after today's announcements, I GIVE UP! I like the mini so I can use one wide screen monitor, ideal for me. But again, nothing since 2014? iMacs old, too.

Very disappointed. Desktops don't rate anymore with Apple. I am souring on Tim Cook and the company. Hate to go back to windows but I may.

Keep calm and carry on guys, there could be a silent hardware announcement next week with USB-C ports and spec bump :)
