Yes there is, the RAM comes in package with the CPU. The M2 has 8, 16 and 24 GB versions. The M2 Pro comes in 16 and 32 GB variants.
Yes, but my point is that's likely not due to chipset limitations. It's due to how Apple decided to sell it. Remember, they sell a 96 GB Max.

Yeah, I think that the M2 Pro can naturally support 48G. Wondering if this marketing decisions could even affect performance due to having to "disable" partially the memory.

Based on the M2 family, the M2 Max has the same three variants times four.

4 × 8 GB = 32 GB
4 × 16 GB = 64 GB
4 × 24 GB = 96 GB

Apple chose not to use the 12 GB chips in these configurations, but there likely isn't any technical reason why they couldn't.

The reason they wouldn't bother is marketing and product mix. ie. From a technical standpoint, they could offer a 48 GB option, but chose not to.

Similarly, M2 Pro has 2x8 GB = 16 GB and 2x16 GB = 32 GB, but if they had wanted, they could have offered 2x12 GB = 24 GB.

Was not expecting a giant price cut. The value of this machine is insane. Even better than the M1 Air at this point.

Well done, Apple!

I just bought an iMac last month, so I won't be getting this Mini. But happy for those who waited it out.

I wanted more ports and memory but to get both is $1700. With another $100 you can get a refurb Studio. I will pass this round as already have a Studio for my main machine.

If a computer I buy is not VERY near silent, it goes right back. No excuses for loud computers.
100% agree for my daily driver computer. Even my Mac mini i7 from 2018 is dead quiet 99.99% of the time. It's served me very well, although I cannot wait to test out Apple Silicon shortly.

I do have a bit more tolerance for my gaming PC, although with headphones even my PC with a 4090 is very quiet.

They dropped the pricing on the M2 Mac mini, as compared to the M1 Mac mini. I didn't think they'd raise prices with M2, but I didn't think they'd lower prices with M2 either, so this comes as a pleasant surprise. :)

Anyhow, I'm happy with my used M1 Mac mini with 16 GB / 1 TB for the foreseeable future.
One of my many theories about Apple lowering the price in the US so it didn't have to go up dramatically in UK and Europe. :)

Got to say, however, I am happy to be eating my figurative hat with an M2 Pro coming out. Apple decided to keep the 'classic' design and put an attractive top SKU in to replace the space grey Intel Mini.

Yes, they put a cap of 32Gb on the M2 Pro mini - they are already making it look like a very attractive product up against a Mac Studio - offering 48Gb RAM on a mini could seriously cannibalise it.

Having said that, the M1 Max Mac Studio currently looks like the no brainer purchase if you need any reasonable level of expansion in a Mac mini - especially if 10 Gig Ethernet is needed. Be warned that M2 Max Mac Studio is clearly going to have a 12-15% price increase in the UK following the price increases on the MacBook Pro models.

This is where the M2 Pro mini probably takes up the slack.

I'll add that with the price decrease of the M2 model it also implies that refurb M1 minis could come at a serious discount. Maybe starting at $500 or less for 8/256 - I would be watching the refurb store very closely for the next few weeks.

I have an M1 mini and I have never heard it. So wonderful! I now have a Phantom Canyon Intel and it is just as quiet!

Yes, this is a fair point. It's possible the M2 Max Mac Studio will see a price increase in Euros.

Seems like this thread has run its course and should be closed?

The new mini is great. 499 for students is crazy. The last one was 649. 100 dollar price cut retail and 150 for students.

The lineup is great now. I’ve been waiting for a Pro chip to replace the Intel. Now you can get every chip apple makes in a standalone desktop form factor.

But then right now is probably the best form the mini line has ever had. The previous generations all suffered drought of updates and features that should have been there but didn't. While with today's update I can't even find anything I want that they didn't deliver. The M2 Pro version even got me thinking I got shafted with my base Studio purchase.

The M2 Pro especially with RAM upgrade is going to last so long for some people I have a feeling it will be regarded as the best mini ever like the 2012 i7 server. I wonder what can even be talked about in this thread then, for at least two years if not more.
