I just know I'd be kicking myself if I buy something with a potential future feature quite literally staring me in my face, that I know I am voluntarily giving up on.
Eh, I'll take Touch ID + Apple Watch unlock over Face ID personally. I'll be glad for the folks who want it once it is added, but I'll be fine with what they offered today.

With the M1 Max, I think I could stretch one of these out for many years so long as it lives up to the heat/noise potential.

Said this in another thread, but this update truly makes the Macbook Pro feel like the true pro model, highest-end laptop it's supposed be again. This last iteration was just way too similar to the Macbook Air to the point where I couldn't justify buying a base model M1 13" Pro because the M1 13" Air had virtually the same capabilities, design, ports, etc. for 200 less dollars. This is the product differentiation that the Pro line desperately needed, in my opinion.

It'll be interesting to see the consumer habits change if the 13 pro gets phased out eventually. Assuming these price points stay the same in the future for the 14" and 16", I assume a lot of people who normally bought MBP models, but don't actually need the capabilities, will transition to Macbook Airs due to the cost gap.

I feel you. Makes sense. These machines are definitely going to last for YEARS.

Just wish there would've been some kind of intermediary notch-less form factor until FaceID was actually ready to go.

Almost makes me think there was some last minute change and they had to remove FaceID for this run of the Pros.

I figured that the moment I realized there was no FaceID.

Makes even less sense to buy now unless you really really need it tbh. They are handing you a reason to delay your purchase as long as you can on a silver platter.

Indeed. Reason to wait now is the M2 Pro and M2 Max based on the A15 + Face ID.

The reason the notch was introduced was for Face ID. But with the MBP, they forgot to add it.

Sad they didn't release a mini with the same power.
Let's see what real world benchmarks give us.
Curious how the M1Max 64gb holds up against an Intel/AMD 16 core 128gb machine.

**** the notch though, worse development than the touchbar...

Yup. I don't understand what extra space people are talking about LOL ?

Screen - Notch = 16:10 aspect ratio = Existing screen aspect ratio

So the notch takes up the additional vertical space, and the menu bar moves up to fill the space on either side. The end result is that it's a bit like running with the menu bar always hidden. Not huge, but still a gain.

Quick comment on the notch/faceid issue:

The way I look at the notch is that the other option to continue offering the top camera would be a larger gap on top with NO screen there. Why not give us screen with a notch? If we want I’m sure we can likely set up a custom resolution that removes the notch entirely and gives us the same situation as if there was a large screenless gap there. This way we can potentially throw some extra data in the “notch row”. It’s all win from my perspective.

While I agree adding the additional components to allow faceID would have been nice, I think the majority of people find touch ID faster and more reliable on a laptop. Your hands are already on the keyboard. It probably would have been quite complex to fit the extra components in there (thickness of screen less than phone) and it seems to give little benefit.

But if you are going to downgrade my display with a notch, then you better give me the Face ID it was meant to include.

No way! Touchbar actually removed functionality; you lost a working row of function keys (and esc on early versions). It was a HUGE pain for many pro users.

Any “problems“ with the notch can instantly be removed by just changing the screen resolution to remove that portion of the screen from the active area. Now you have a 16:10 display just like last generation; no loss of functionality.

Like on the phones, I predict the notch is going to turn into a nothingburger quickly.

It’s not a downgrade though. Think of it as extra pixels above the display that would otherwise just be housing. I’m sure with a custom resolution you will be able to completely remove the notch bar and then it will be normal 16:10.

I’m glad that there’s people who don’t like the redesign, means it’ll be easier to get when I save up enough to order one.

I am one of the people who is on the fence about the design and I can still tell you that your view is dangerously optimistic ?

Eh. I guess. Until FaceID makes it to the notch, I would rather lose that teeny-tiny bit of additional space for a more seamless visual experience. Until then, that notch is just dead space to me.

Only way this will be perfect is if the Menu Bar can hit a True Black shade with the LEDs. If that's on the cards, to hell with all my complaints, I'm all in.

Yep, I think a lot of us with super-hot MBP 16"+external screen setups can't wait to heard about the heat/thermal performance.

I would be chocked if it isn't substantically improved, but I will await real world tests with the impatience of a little child upon Christmas!

With that many LEDs; it will be truely black (as in no light at all coming from the screen in that area). The only possible risk is going to be software related; as custom resolutions will require some OS tweaking. Hopefully Apple will just realize this should be a feature and give us a settings option that just disables the notch row for us. But I‘m pretty confident we can get rid of it even without Apple’s help. macOS is significantly less locked down than Apple’s other platforms.

The notch does not bother me as below it you still have a full 16:10. I run in dark mode so it'll hardly be noticeable.

EXTREMELY happy with 120Hz VRR, I doubted this was coming.

Now every single device I own, TV, MacBook, iPhone all support VRR + 120Hz + HDR, for those who haven't experienced it before, its huge.

Over 50 billion transistors on single chip (using TSMC's N5P process I presume) is f****** mind blowing. To give some comparison the Nvidia RTX 3090 which has a monster GPU built on Samsungs 8nm process is *only* 28 billion. They must be getting some impressive yield numbers as that will be some very expensive silicon.

I'm trying to think of a single module consumer chip that has more transistors and I can't think of any. Intel doesn't, AMD uses chiplets - even combined don't even come close to this, Nvidia - nope.

Could you just create a background with the top 74 pixels or however many it is and make it solid black?
