The A15 chip is not required for FaceID. The iPad Pro has both M1 chip and FaceID, so its not a processor issue.

Also FaceID on a Mac is FAR LESS important if you have setup your Apple Watch to unlock -- works fantastic even on older macs (like my 2015 iMac at work).

Good point. Which makes me wonder - why can't the Watch unlock an iPad? Didn't even think about that until now.

I am glad for now Face ID! I travel a lot always have mask and that's not going away anytime soon. I wasn't not planning getting one, but caved into the base 14! Whose getting the 14 vs 16? I don't do very tough task.. like the brightness and old school feel, speed and better screen over my Air!
I’m opting for the base 14”. The CPU and GPU are overkill for me, but I do like the idea of a bigger screen. I wonder what the next MacBook Air will look like, and whether it will remain <3 lbs.

The base model is the M1 model released last year and the price *is* untouched
I think you know what I mean. Please read again the header: “the new mbps is literally everything i wanted”. I made my point, that’s all. And no, I’m not whining. Price seems to be fair for an Apple device. It will be hard to find a better-equipped laptop or workstation at these prices. We should see the reviews first, but feature-wise these things are almost flawless.

with the apps running in full screen, the notch is hidden because the app does not extend all the way out to the border which makes sense as you dont want the notch intruding your application. but it also means you have have got a big bezel at the top like the 16 inch macbook. so we are back to square one?

Just meant to point out that the new mbps are not base model

I like all the changes EXCEPT the notch. But given how much the rest of the machine has improved greatly, the notch probably isn't a deal breaker.

sorry but how should that work with this notch?
a lot of apps have menu items in this position!
does the system know the notch exists and automatically moves the menu items out of its way?
everything else would be weird... but then this means there is less space for menu bar items.
do apps need an extra build to support the notch?
are there some infos out about this? (it looks like a mess)

at least that stupid crap bar is gone ? thats the best

No Face-ID is a massive fail though.
I’m guessing component shortages is what made them hold off on this. The priority for these modules is the iPhone and iPad Pro, since they already have it. Including it this year would have probably delayed them and constrained inventory quite a bit.

32-core GPU?
Up to 64GB unified memory?
Thicker for more thermal performance?

You would almost think this was made for professionals! I love it!

This is not a design made by Jony Ive, just saying! :p
And thicker for more battery performance. I love all of these things and pre-ordered today but I do think we’ve sacrificed aesthetic beauty for function. Despite this not being the most beautiful MacBook design ever, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

  • Massive performance boost
  • ProMotion 120Hz, holy crap they actually added this when I expected it to be next year
  • Insane screen brightness for working in coffee shops (which I do a lot)
  • I didn't even know it but I wanted the freaking notch in exchange for more screen space
  • More ports!
  • No touch bar
  • A bit thicker for more sustained power and battery life
Best laptop speaker, mic, better webcam are just bonuses.

PS. I'm going to buy the base version 16" because I know I will be upgrading next year when they will use the more efficient A15 and maybe add Face ID.
Where does this thicker case come from? The Apple published specification for the 14" is the same (actually it's .01 mm thinner) thickness as the 13" and the 16" is a mere 1.2 mm thicker than the 13". While technically it's thicker are you really going to notice (other than side by side comparison)?

They don't include the feet in the measurements --- the thickness of body+display isn't a huge difference, but those new feet at least look significantly taller.

Since they don't include it for either the 13" or 14" / 16" then they're being measured exactly the same. As for the look part the best you can say is they look taller. I also think basing the thickness on feet protrusion is stretching it.

My point is the new feet seem to be quite a bit taller than the old feet/pads.

I don't think the new machines look that much different --- they've increased the depth slightly and decreased the width, which increases the ratio of width:height, which I'm sure also affects perception of thickness.

The new macbooks do look chunkier. The design is growing on me going to go see it in person on the 26th and try and pick one up in the store.

Well, you’re right— and that’s the direction Apple went with. Function over form. For instance, the beefy display lid is dictated by the mini LED, I’m sure.

Laptops can be beautiful, though— the original MacBook Air and the MacBook 12” come to mind. For this particular machine, though— we needed a BEAST ??

I know what your point is and you're basing it on nothing more than pictures (or have you seen one in real life?)

It will be interesting to see what they do with the next Air. Will they retain a “wedge” in some form, or switch to the boxier design of the new Pros? If M2 is based on the A15 (or A16), it should gain even more efficiency, so Apple shouldn’t feel the pressure to make the Air any thicker or heavier (I’d actually like them to bring back an ultralight model - it would be a perfect use of the M2’s performance per watt). I’m sure we’ll see the bigger screen with the notch, but it won’t get ProMotion or the fancier speakers and microphone.

I'm basing it on pictures, AR, and the measurements given in both the unleashed event and on Apple's websites. I don't get your hostility; I've said several times that the perception that many people have that the newer MBPs look thicker is likely due to a few factors. I'm not claiming facts; I'm conjecturing. ?‍♂️
