The new MBPs is literally everything I wanted

On the design, I will admit that the base looks a bit on the "fatty" side whereas the current design with a slight taper makes the base look slimmer, more elegant.

I think we might get a clue to why that is when Fixit makes a tear apart session. Not sure if the HDMI port can explain it, could be the thermal system.

In any event, I would have to see it in person, Space Grey editor to pass final judgment.

Kinda, but for the purists they actually want the menu bar moved down as well, and this requires some software tweaking. I think the background will probably be fine for 99.9% of users; but people want what they want. I get it.

Not gonna lie I was happy waiting for updated mini but now I'm gonna wait for the reviews and I'm really interested in the 14" with 10/16 cores.
I'm getting it if they don't overheat.

I totally understand waiting to see it in person, as it is a large investment. However we are in a unique chip supply crisis. I hope this isn’t the case; but it wouldn't surprise me if you will have to wait 6 months or more once the early stock is sold.

Hopefully this won’t be the case, and apple has somehow worked around this situation. But that would make Apple almost unique; as it seems to be effecting absolutely every other manufacturer.

Just be careful if you have a business need that is time sensitive.

Yep, I think a lot of us with super-hot MBP 16"+external screen setups can't wait to heard about the heat/thermal performance.

I would be chocked if it isn't substantically improved, but I will await real world tests to the impatience of a little child upon Christmas!

M1 CPU peak 10 Watts (performance: 100)
M1 Pro/Max CPU peak 30 Watts (performance: 170)
200% more power usage for a 70% performance gain

M1 GPU peak 10 Watts (performance: 100)
M1 Pro 16c GPU peak 30 Watts (performance: 200)
M1 Max 32c GPU peak 60 Watts (performance: 400)
200%/500% more power usage for 100%/300% performance gain

For reference the previous 16 inch MBP Radeon 5600M GPU uses 50 Watts at peak performance. The M1 Pro GPU is up to 70% faster according to Apple’s website. This means that the M1 Pro has better performance and uses less power. The M1 Max GPU is even faster but uses more power.

In my opinion the M1 delivers fantastic performance while using very little power. The Pro and Max deliver better performance but use substantially more power and thus will not be as cold and silent as the M1.

Note: I’m not sure if the power usage shown by Apple includes the neural and media engine etc which likely also contribute to the increased performance of the M1 Pro/Max. They obviously also use power and generate heat.

I think the difference is the M1 Pro/Max will be silent and cool when doing general usage stuff and only spinning up when necessary. The Intel 16" would spin up and get hot doing relatively minor stuff like Zoom calls.

These chips will have their cores gated which means they will only run when required which means they'll run just like a fanless MacBook Air when doing stuff that doesn't require a lot of performance.

Not sure why you’d want data in an easily disconnected plug. The iMac has strong magnets so it’s not MagSafe.

I seem to be the only one unphased by the port situation. I would've been happy with 4 TB3/4 and an SD card slot. I plug my MacBook into a hub anyway and that's how I prefer it, one thing to plug/unplug with everything feeding into it. I prefer USB-C over MagSafe for the universal compatibility and being able to charge from either side.

I am stuck between the space grey and silver. I have a 2015 MBP in Silver and love it and the 2019 MBP in space grey which I don't like as much. Though, looking at the picture of the space grey it looks really sleek on the chassis. What are you guys going with?

Pretty much where I am as well, from several angles these are honestly not attractive computers... but then they will be fantastic computers nonetheless. I like the look of the display and keyboard deck - just the black keyboard depression bothers me. If I'm going to be spending a lot of money on this thing and keeping it a long while I want to look at it and think what a nice looking piece of hardware, and so far I don't. I get many people couldn't give a toss, but for me that is an important part of these machines...

You're not limited to charging from either side, as you can still charge from any of the USB-C type ports.

Also, the move from TB3 to TB4 has lots of bandwidth benefits -- with 3 TB4, it's almost like having 6 TB3. If you were dongling at all before, your dongle game has just received a big upgrade.

The menu bar is like almost over 2 times thicker than what it was. Moving it up 5mm has done absolutely nothing to create more space.

Thin bezel + Thin Menu bar vs. No Bezel + Thick Menu Bar to line up with the notch. There is no more usable space than there already was.

Exactly what I’d say, except for the price. They could at least leave the base model price untouched. But whatever. This is by far the laptop of year, given that no heat or noise problems arise.

The base model is the M1 model released last year and the price *is* untouched

Instead of getting a reasonable bezel + thin menu bar, you are getting a thin bezel + a thicker Menu bar. There is barely any real estate gained at all.

The fact that there isn't any FaceID just adds insult to injury.

Uh, definitely NOT 2.5 times thicker. Maybe 1.25 times thicker?

And do you really think FaceID would matter to people who hate the notch (I'm not one of them, btw, just to clarify). Of course not. They've been railing on it for the iPhone for ages now, and that DOES have FaceID.

I don't see how the notch is necessarily connected to Face ID? My iPad Pro has Face ID and no notch. A laptop will have the camera and any other sensors either in the bezel or in a notch. Putting them in a notch means slimmer bezel and more screen available, and the menu bar wraps around the notch anyway. I don't have any problem with the notch.

This is why I don't understand people's complaints about the notch (or is it that they don't understand the change?)... the notch hasn't eaten into screen space, it has allowed ADDITIONAL space either side of it
