Still love WoW - but hate the monthly fee.

I'd be willing to pay a little more for the game itself, if they dumped the monthly fee.

It will be interesting to discover what business model Blizzard adopts for Titan. Monthly subscriptions seem to be on the way out, but maybe Blizzard figures they have such a large fan base, they can get away with it?

This is what they show for Titan (Blizzard's next MMO), but there is no assurance this is accurate:

A sci-fi ? Maybe a mix between WoW and Starcraft worlds. Or not. Anyway, I think it will take a while before we know anything more.

I don't believe we are going to see any new release using the subscription-based model. Especially since there are lots of free-to-play alternatives (even more when Titan gets near release).

It will be tough for blizzard to get me back, though, as I will be playing ESO fanatically ;)

(whom's business model we also don't know)

Titan appears to be under tight wraps until Blizzard makes some kind of announcement. You won't really know about ESO until you see it, right? :p

Absolutely. But as it seems that it will be keeping the same feeling as the offline version (you know, you begin for a quest and after 2 hours you find yourself doing lots of other unplanned things on your way there, so the quest itself feels optional). Game designer said all the right things I was expecting to hear in an interview, so I'm sold already :p

P.S. I LOVE Elder Scrolls series, especially Morrowind. Just imagine Morrowind places to be there, too.

Every so often I get bogged down with World of Tanks and long for some good ole fashion MMORPGing, something that might replicate the fun of an early WoW, easy to get into, solo friendly, with open levels, and non-oppressive grind. After reading that Elder Scrolls Online will be delayed until 2014, I was disappointed and am wondering if I should try a MMO-fling? ;) If so what would that be? Recently read about the free MMORPG, Neverwinter- any good? Or what about Aion 4.0?

Any followers of this thread will know I've tried several of the recent hope-to-be big name games like Star Wars and Guild Wars 2, but they did not work out for me. Then Planetside (MMOFPS), then got sidetracked with World of Tanks and have been playing that ever since.

It may be of interest, that after participating in the beta of both of those games (SW and GW2), I've sworn off betas. For me at this point in my gaming life there is no better way to ruin a new MMORPG.

Update: Neverwinter, Save Your Money- Don't know if it's true but the author of this article hates it...

next big mmo is only going to be Titan (blizzard) or World of Darkness (vampire version of eve online)

elder scrolls will be another guild wars. all other mmos won't matter.

I'll be honest. After doing the beta testing, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be taking up most of my free time.

It reminds me of FFXI, in a very good way. I was very disappointed with the last attempt at replacing FFXI, this time they definitely got it right. The best part, my old linkshell is getting back together for FFXIV.

I'm really looking forward to World of Darkness, mostly because I used to play the hell out of the pen and paper RPG back with my friends in college.

I am back to playing WoW again and really enjoying it. I play a very casual solo game and have a great time at that. I am in a nice guild and may yet do some groups or raids but I'm in no rush for that stuff. I expect I'll be playing WoW on and off for years to come considering all the things I still want to do in the game and of course as time goes by there will be more expansions as well.

I am sometimes tempted to try Guild Wars 2 but I am really put off they went with Cider to port it and I recall hearing it hadn't been receiving regular updates. Last I knew it was still considered a beta after so much time. That's a real shame. Had it been a "real port" I'd probably own it and be playing it by now.

Upcoming, The Elder Scrolls Online interests me but we'll have to wait and see what sort of goods they deliver. I won't be there day one I don't think. I'll wait and see how it turns out for a while.

Titan I expect will be fun whatever it is and I am looking forward to that. I am a Blizzard fan as you might imagine. I think that's a long ways off though to be thinking much about which is just as well. I've got enough going on in WoW.

Free trial of GW2

Check out the free trial of Guild Wars 2 August 23-25. It is a great Mac game beta or not. I am a casual player and may not recognize beta faults but with three characters at top level I can recommend this game. :)

I'm really looking forward to World of Darkness, mostly because I used to play the hell out of the pen and paper RPG back with my friends in college.

I also played the beta and have pre-ordered the game...

I have zero experience with the previous FF MMOs, but have played many of the RPGs in the series.

I played a Lancer and only got to level 9 over the weekend, so my take is limited to the really early parts of the game.

Visuals
The game is very pretty, and i'm still in Gridania which is pretty basic forest like area. I am really looking forward to exploring the rest of the world. So far, the outfits/armor are pretty hideous... Reminds me of a bad Three Musketeers movie. If it weren't for the armor/outfits I have seen in later parts of the game, I might have quit already. :p

Audio
The music is pretty good, but a bit too familiar. The voice acting is almost non-existent so far. Most of the main story quests so GW2 like cut-scenes, but it's all text. I've only run into one quest so far where there was a cut scene with voice acting. I don't mind text, but even in WoW and other games the initial greeting of a NPC was voice acted, but not FFXIV (at least so far).

Combat
The combat (at least what I have seen so far), is very flashy which helps a bit to make up for the antiquated combat system (i.e. WoW like). The visuals of the different attacks I have are really nice, and I expect it only to get better. Also, with the class system (i.e. level any or all classes and job system), I really expect there to be some interesting builds. The early level mobs look pretty near, but combat with them has been pretty dull so far. My attacks are flashy, but the mob stuff is pretty flat.

Travel
The Athernet is pretty cool idea. FFXIV is a zoned game, but not really instanced at least it does not appear to be. Athernet is a series of crystals around the world, once you attune yourself to one you should be able to travel between the crystals you have attuned to (in the same network I believe). For example, the main city I am in is broken down into different sections and there is a crystal in each section. If I go up to one of those crystals I can then port to another location in that network. For those of you that have played WoW, think of it this way... Stormwind is broken into districts if there was a crystal in every district them you would be able to "quick travel or port" from say the Dwarven District to Mage Quarter. There are also Chocobo rides, but it appears I have to be level 10 to use them and so I have not had the chance as of yet.

Quests & Fates
Quests are pretty standard, but some of them have multiple steps. For example the quest give in FFXIV also has an ! mark and will give you a quest, and if it's a quest that has multiple steps, when you have completed the first step, the person you talk to (not necessarily the original quest giver) will have a different symbol about their head (forgot what it looks like). Once you have actually completed the quest there will be a green check by the quest and the person you turn it into will also have a green check.

The hunting log is pretty neat... I believe it starts at around level 5 and basically is just a list of creatures you can kill for extra xp and reward. most of the creatures will be ones you gets quests for. I did not have the chance to complete the log in the opening area, so I am not sure what happens when you do.

Fates, at least in the opening areas, have been pretty disappointing. They appear to be random (unlike GW2 scripted re-run events), but so far have no substance. The early fates have been nothing more than a bunch of mobs (usually of the same type) attacking an area at the same time. I expect and hope there to be more to Fates later on (i.e. stages of completion and stuff).

As for levequests and guildhests, I have not participated in these yet.

Reading through my take, I realize there are a few "negatives" mentioned. However, I like the game and plan on at least playing through my "free" month before I make a final decision. What I have seen so far is a solid game with a few minor quirks or inconsistencies, so of which may be non-existent later in the game.

I don't mind antiquated combat. :):)

I was big into WoW, but when I tried StarWars and GW2 neither grabbed me. I've not played any of the FFs, but my impression is there was usually grind, big grind. Since ESO has been delayed to 2014, I may give FFIV: A Realm Reborn a shot.

My questions: is the game solo/casual friendly? The zones look compelling, but the question is how large and open are they? Is the grind big? Do you have to craft to be competitive? Thanks much!

I've gone ahead and pre-ordered the new Final Fantasy XIV. It goes retail on the 27Aug. Once I get on, I'll report back (if anyone cares). ;) It does have a subscription associated with it, which imo, raises the bar for a MMORPG considering the other online games I'm (was) playing have recently been free of subscriptions costs, not they are totally free (cough... WoT).

Short movement video:

I've never seen a character move like this in an MMO before. Course I live a sheltered life. :p

Outstanding atmosphere in these screenshots. It's like there is an atmosphere. I'm excited about the potential. :) BTW, Final Fantasy XIV is going well, hanging in there. :D

More on Everquest Next

BTW, I never played Everquest, but this excites me. As I said, I don't think I've ever seen anything like this in an MMO before and that includes Final Fantasy XIV which I am currently playing. I wonder how they will handle micro-transactions. They are going to have to make their money somehow.

Since Sony is handling this and I did play Planetside 2 for a while, it is hopeful that the micro-transaction model will emulate PS2 to some degree. I did not find PS2's to be onerous, however, a game like EN has many more opportunities for gear upgrades than PS does (I think). I have no idea when it will debut, but it has me thinking about volunteering for beta. :p The Everquest next Wiki article thinks 2014. This is before Blizzard's Titan projected release date.

Debut video This is the Everquest Debut program at some electronic gamy show (I think). Start watching about the 26 minute point:

I still like Dungeons and Dragons online.... although for some reason my newest Mac, the download stops right in the middle and says it's done when it's not done yet.

I don't think after GW2 I could ever go back to that old form of combat.

EQN seems more sandboxy, and thats what I am looking forward too, but so far I am not convinced. I don't think SOE is a very good developer, but who knows. Planetside 2 was solid enough, but it doesn't really have the vision I think.

I assume you are downloading in Windows?

Just checking but are you aware there is now a native Mac version of DDO. Turbine also released a native version of LoTRO for Mac too some time ago now. I have them both installed on my system and popped in to check on my toons in each but I've been too busy with WoW to spend any real time with either of them yet.

It remains to be seen if they can pull it off, but there is the potential for significant innovations in EQN. The combat footage was enough to excite me. Fingers crossed this amounts to something.

I realize you mentioned PS2 in passing but, here's the thing about Planetside 2... I was a huge Planetside player and I was enthusiastic about PS2, played it for about 4 months, but Wot ruined me for it. I'm into tank combat and I found that in PS2 had it's moments, and being a persistent world was a big plus, but there was also a lot of sitting around facilities waiting for them to be capped, and I did not like the new configuration where the driver was also the gun operator which resulted in a lethality downgrade imo. A dedicated drive and gunner was the best and I did not like having to drive, and avoid obstacles, while trying to shoot a moving target. And then, although it was exactly the same way in the original PS, with something as high tech as a vanguard tank, I just don't see gunners having to use Kentucky windage to lead targets. I'm never driven an Abrams but I don't believe gunners are building in their own lead. Maybe someone with experience with real tanks could comment. :)

I knew there was a Mac LoTRO but did not realize or had forgotten there was a Mac DDO.
