Another round of free trial time to play Guild Wars 2 for anyone interested:

The Free Trial period starts at 12:01 AM PDT on September 27, 2013 and ends at 11:59 PM PDT on October 3, 2013.

I'm going to give it another go myself. I left it installed from last time. I only got to play for about an hour as I was busy during the last trial period. I recall it seemed very demanding of the hardware. I'll see how it goes this time. I'll be playing on my mid-2011 27" iMac with 3.1 GHz Core i5, Radeon 6970m and 12 gigs RAM. I'd hope GW2 would run decently on this setup but we shall see.

I'm confused, I thought GW2 debuted as a no-subscription game? At least that is how I remember it for the first month of retail that I played it.

Considering most MMOs aim for the entire gaming market, especially if you are talking about 2GB VRAM on your card, I see no problems.

Edit: Free Trial as in play the game. I forgot you had to buy it first, doh!

Do have the right game here, as Guld Wars 2 is subs free, you BUY the game then it runs by the player buying gems that you then trade in for extra in game stuff like bank space, armours, weapons etc.

Just took this from their website -

Guild Wars 2 defines the future of online roleplaying games with action-oriented combat, customized personal storylines, epic dynamic events, world-class PvP, and no subscription fees!

I assume you mean that you can try the game online without purchasing the game first ?

After I had a chance to put my foot in mouth, I believe that is what he means. :)

Yes, that is what I meant - a free trial which is completely free. You can download the game and play it during the trial at no cost. When it ends you can either buy the game to keep playing or not.

I think I might buy it if I can come up with settings I am happy with performance-wise.

A lot of MMO Games is like this now. Neverwinter, Rift, Guild Wars to name the popular ones. I believe SW:ToR and EverQuest II also.

How is Guild Wars 2?

I have been toying with the idea of getting back into some RPG game on the computers.

Actually, got EQ Mac installed the other night just for nostalgia sake. Man what a flashback that is.... Shame it is going away. Wife and I could have some fun starting from scratch on there. May try a Parallels install and toy with the real EQ. Or maybe WOW, since we still have our characters on there. Just the end game killed it for us. Turned a game into a Job. What fun is that? I have a job already.

Then I was looking around and saw some videos of Guild Wars 2 and it looks amazing, and I like the fact that there isn't a monthly subscription. Just buy the game. I guess you pay for gems for items or such. Is that necessary? Can you still enjoy the game without that?

Since we will definitely NOT have the time we used to have, it will definitely be a rare evening to play. But it would be nice to have something we can both play together again.

Does the Mac client connect to the same servers, like in WoW?

Don't take my word as gospel, but I tried it, it seemed fairly good, but I did not care for the story progression and I ran into some situations which should have been solable, but were not, at least for me, so I finally said, ehh. Final Fantasy XIV is better although it does require a subscription to play. You should try GW2 and see what you think.

As we won't be able to invest even 10% of the time we used to with WoW, and me with EQ, the story progression won't be as big of a problem. I don't think. And hopefully, if we both play we can handle anything that isn't soloable. The video of the game play looks great, so will probably check it out.

Can't be of any help besides stating that I think I saw them having a promotion these days. Might want to check it out.
Yeah I believe their free promotion just ended a bit ago. Wish I had the itch sooner, just the past couple months have been crazy with kids sports, scouts, my band, church etc... so we may get a little lul coming up and maybe get to play something.

I picked up Civ5, which is fun, but can't hold my attention long enough.

For VERY casual play, is the deluxe edition worth considering at all?

On another note, I recently got a free week in WoW so I jumped in to check out new stuff in 5.4. I'm now studying in another country so I can't (and shouldn't) devote much time it, and I've been playing casually for last few days.

Turns out there's so much stuff for solo/ and low level play that doesn't require schedules, guilds and groups now. Proving grounds, LFR, Flex, new world zones, etc.

I think I will resubscribe and play casually, because it really is more fun than reading forums in my free time ^_^

Yeah I actually activated my old account with the 10 day trial just to pop on. Still debating things. Maybe it would be fun for us to start over with a new character on the server.

I logged onto my Hunter which was in Org. Went outside and was wondering what the hell is all this stuff out here. Where are the Zeppelins... Guess being away for I guess almost 4 years will do that.

But to start off scratch may be fun. But if we do that, that is $25 a month for the both of us. So may just give GW2 a try for something brand new and not a rehash of what we did for I guess it was 4 or 5 years.

Ye, they moved zaps inside the city in Cataclysm ;)

Did you check out SWTOR? I tried it a while ago and while it felt like wow in space, it had some appeal to me as a SW fan. The levelling was much more fun with all those story and spoken dialogs, at least.

It's a fantastic game. It's the best MMO I've played in almost a decade. It's also very different, so it has to be measured with different googles.

And to answer your question, yes it can be played casually. it's one of the most casual friendly games. Not a lot of time waste or mandatory grinding. :)

Well that sounds like it is definitely worth giving it a shot. Wifee actually hoped on EQ Mac a bit ago from home. Funny, like trying to relearn to ride a bike.

So would you say the deluxe version isn't necessary? Definitely like the fact that there are no monthly fees, especially if we go a month or so without playing.

Be something fun for us to do when we find a free evening. :)

I tried GW2 during the free weekend and couldn't even make it past the tutorial. I'm guessing it's because I've never played an MMO, really, and the mechanics and overall feel are totally foreign to me. I was a bit disappointed, it looked like it's a fun game.

Hehe. No you don't need the deluxe edition at all. It's just cosmetic things:D

That's too bad. It's a very accessable game, but like all MMOs they take slight adjustments to get used to. I am sure that if you stick with it for a little while, it will make more sense to you.
Good things are not always instantly rewarding, but then again I've played MMOs since Everquest was all the rage in the late 90s, so I am probably not the one who can understand your views the best.

Massively's Best of 2013 Awards

MMO of the year = FF:ARR
This game managed to achieve something I thought was impossible: Square-Enix took a game that I considered the worst MMO I've ever played and turned it into something that keeps me logging in every chance I get.

Most Likely to Flop = Elder Scrolls Online
MMORPG fans are sick of story-driven single-player themepark MMOs, console fans will be mystified by subs and a three-way PvP endgame, and Elder Scrolls fans will wander back to the lore and mods of their solo sandboxes.

Most Anticipated = Everquest Next
I'm an absolute sucker for sandboxes, and the idea of a fantasy sandbox with a voxel-based and completely destructible world has me absolutely excited! The huge financial success of Minecraft has inspired a deluge of voxel-based games in recent years, but no game has yet done the feature justice

Best Trend = Return of Sandbox Stuff
I like that trends are swinging back toward a variety of gameplay features this year. Voxels! Sandboxy things! I turn around and suddenly MMOs are launching with housing again! Holy smokes!

There fixed IMO. ;) Distinction should be made as EQL is destined for retail early 2014 and EQN who knows, maybe not till late 2014-2015. EQL focuses on building and is closer to a true MMO sandbox, EQN is a more traditional MMORPG with quests and a destructible environment. It's unknown (as far as I know) how closely tied these two separate games will be.

Thanks! I'll be following this game. I've got a love/hate relationship with SOE. They're pioneers with iconic games like EQ and usually innovate (Planetside, SWG). But the way they handled SWG has become the token example of how to ruin a game

NEWS FLASH: The Unannounced Project called Titan (by Blizzard) is quite different than originally intended...but we don't want to talk about it. Huh, whatever... ;) (a couple of months old, source IGN)

Rumor: likely not subscription based...
Want to Know More?: plan on waiting forever... or get excited about Everquest Next/Landmark now. :D

While Blizzard has a lot going on at BlizzCon with all of the games it has formally announced, the subject of Titan -- the company's unannounced MMO project -- was addressed by CEO Mike Morhaime, who mentioned the game is now quite a bit different from the developer's original plans for it.

"We've been pretty transparent about what's been happening. We're talking about an unannounced project, which, honestly, [it's] a little awkward to be talking so much about that," Morhaime said today at BlizzCon. "What we found is, we've been working on this game, and we recognized that the path we were on was not going to yield the Blizzard-quality result in a reasonable timeframe. So we took a step back, we asked a lot of really hard questions about what we were doing and what should we be doing, and I think we've come up with something really great."

Asked for how the current iteration of the game compares with Blizzard's original vision for it, he said, "It is pretty different from what we originally set out to do."

Please don't be in space... alien planet, that's ok. :)
