From all my research into the Radeon 2600 series cards before buying one for my media PC, the common factor is that their power requirements are way less than most in their price/performance bracket. Maybe ATI don't have the chips yet, so that could be as much a factor as price, etc. Then again, is the 2600 Pro chip in the new iMacs a mobile version, so it could happen. We'll know for sure in the coming months, that much is certain.

Both the nVidia 8xxx series (as in the MBP) and the ATI 26xx series (as in the iMac) are DX10 capable cards, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Really? I haven't heard a word about DX10 and ATI. That's awesome. Competition is always good. A few weeks ago I would have been pissed if they used ATI do to ATI's linux drivers being so sucky. But now, thanks to them open sourcing their driver, I can use Apple hardware to fire up my linux partition whenever I want to show people a desktop with some eyecandy.:)

I where going to answer to this thread way earlier, but I didn't remembered my login so it took some time, and during that time more rumors have shown up, but here goes anyway.
Hey guys, I was just wondering what you all thought was going to be in the next MacBook Pro update?
Personally I am waiting until Leopard gets released and then keeping my ear perked for rumors. I am really hoping for a Penryn/Montevina MBP. I don't really care about a G90 card as the 15" screen isn't large enough to really need it(for those that game on their MBP), the 17" however may with that monstrous resolution. I really doubt the 13" will be made available.
I think we will see a mobile version of whatever cpu generation comes next, that is the penryn in this case since Apple seems to always want the latest cpus in their machines. That makes jan/feb a good time. But now new rumors have shown up and if they are true we will see case redesigns and other things but not CPUs.

I don't think we will see a new graphics card since the higher ends will run hotter, more video memory eventually, and I would hate Apple a little for that even if it's a good thing because I bought this 2.2GHz one against my will because of their ****ing retarded decision to stick 128MB in it ;D

Higher resolutions we could hope I guess, 1440x900 are kind of lowend and lame imho.

13" eventually, but it can't use the same gfx then, so I don't see why they need it since machines with integrated graphics are already covered. So I guess not.
nothing drastic is gonna come any time soon, one issue with new cpu's is that there getting faster but also ruinning hotter, the sr mbp's run quite hot as it is, if you stick a faster cpu and gfx card in there your gonna have to do somthing about the extra heat, so i would think apple will be looking at these heat issues right now.

where not gonna see a leap like we did going from g4 to core and then core 2 for a long while, what we will see is incremental speed bumps. prehaps the next big shift will be to solid state disks, although i cant see this happening for at least a good 8 months yet.
Shrinkage of the fabrication always allow for faster components at similair temps, and the next cpus will be 45nm. AMD released their quads at the same temp ratings as their duos.

We will definitly see quad core notebooks soon, we'll see if it happens during 2008 or not.

Solid state drives always seems to be quite a bit away, for small storage usage and ultra portables yes, maybe, for macbook pros it will have to wait.

Bluray as option is ok, I sure as hell don't wanna pay for it ;D
What if... the trackpad was gone and replaced with a rectangular multi-touch screen like the iPhone??!?! That would be pretty amazing, i think.... Then it could change with whatever app you were using, scroll, pinch-resize, etc, as well as function as a mouse..... interesting!
I guess it will be more conventional but that such things as pinching for zooming the desktop might work.
> Flash and HDD for storage. Put the OS on a 4/8/16 GB flashdrive, and have Apps install there, and put most everything but a GB of the latest working docs on the HDD. That way instant boot. Faster processing. Better battery life.
> GPS. It will happen one day. A portable unit for use with all Apple BT enabled devices (iPhone) would be pretty popular with Google Map users.
> HDMI out replaces DVI out. Pretty much going to happen if Bluray is enabled.
> Dedicated H264 processor. To take the heavy lifting off the CPUs for video.
> Small external screen - for widgets, reminders etc when sleeping.
> Even higher screen resolution 1920x1080 for 15" screens with the coming of Leopard and screen independence.
> New keyboard along the lines of the MB. Still backlit.
> Better battery life.
> Lighter
> 10-12" model - superlight model
> 512MB graphics card option
> New magnetic or re-engineered lid clasp
> iMac like high gloss and tougher glass screen
Flash memory? Yes, once fast, reliable and cheap.
GPS? No way, I see no usage for it.
HDMI instead of DVI? Why? They are the same thing basicly, would be for sound then.
H264 decoding? Already there. Sort of VC-1 on 8600m, fully on HD2600.
External screen would be ok.
Higher resolution I hope.
Another keyboard yes, eventually, rumors says so.. I still haven't figured out how the macbook one might feel, the keys look so large but I guess they aren't =P
512MB vram and some point yes, of course, 1 and 2GB aswell ;D
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want an external screen making the back of my beautiful MacBook Pro look like some ugly lolWindows machine. I may be okay with it if it was fitted behind the Apple logo, but that would be (functionally) very strange.
I thought about it as a small say 3-4" screen which actually shows the Apple logotype when it's not in use ..

EG, a 120GB Flash drive for a laptop might have 160GB of actual Flash in order to rotate more cells for the write cycles. Just my guess though:eek:
Better let the user use it all and if some cell fail you are screwed there obviously, but then just block that one from further usage and keep on using it. Better have a filesystem which tells you when something got corrupt thought, like ZFS.
Interesting. At first I figured you mighty be mistaken for the size of the drive before and after formatting; but I think the actual size and the reported size would be something like 32 mb and 29 mb respectively.
More likely the numbers comes from people using real MiB compared to 10^6 bytes.
Apple really needs to stick with nVidia too. nVidia has the DX10 ability and the Linux support.
Except most Apple users don't care about Linux and AMD have released specs now and simple open drivers which will become better, so they are currently "better" in open source regards than Nvidia. Also their cards are DX10 cards aswell.
Fewer mechanical components = greater reliability
As long as things are properly shielded, it shouldn't matter.
Not to mention it takes a VERY strong magnet to wipe a HDD, if that was his issue.
Completely new to the Mac world though (this will be my first Apple purchase, excluding my iPod); what do you all think the odds are that a MBP/MB refresh will be done at the same time as the release of Leopard? I'm guessing that release will be another big-deal keynote by Jobs, so he'll have to have more to talk about than just the OS, wouldn't you think?
Not likely, why?

If there are no reason to upgrade, it won't happen obviously.
Of there are a reason to upgrade, Steve will be intelligent enough to release Leopard first to fool people into buying the old system before releasing the new one.
On the other hand, Apple can't wait too long to refresh MBP. It'll be difficult to explain the customers why e. g. Dell offers faster notebooks.

My wish would be:
MBP 15" 2.4GHz, 256MB VRAM
MBP 15" 2.6GHz, 256MB VRAM (512 MBytes BTO)
MBP 17" 2.6GHz, 512MB VRAM

Jochen
While I think it's retarded to have 128MB vram on the 8600m GT I'm quite confident it's not powerful to have much usage for 512MB.

Also Dell won't have more powerful systems because there aren't any better components out yet...
Faster graphic on 15' are not possible, as they already underclocked now. Unless a new model performs as cool but faster, which is unlikely for another year. 8700m is not innovative enough to keep cool and faster.
Underclocked by 5MHz aren't they? That's nothing. The memory are quite much underclocked thought for some reason.

The 8700m GT got the same amount of stream processors so I think it's the same chip but just one which came out better and could clock higher together with better cooling. So just an overclocked 8600m GT with eventually better sinks and fans.
Hmm I have read a couple rumors about the strong possibility of a black MacBook Pro. I guess it would make sense as the black MacBook sells well and Apple has a current trend towards silver and black. Could this be the new higher end 15"? I don't know if this will be new 15", but I do know that the MBP looks sexy as hell in black.
Black would be awesome, I hate silver.

Btw, here in Sweden Tres (tre.se, mobile phone company) uses what looks like a macbook pro in their tv ads for 3G broadband but it has a screen with black edges which looks slimmer than the MBPs... Just like the iMac but with a MBP. Maybe they are onto something ;D, or just thought it looked cooler ...
User upgradeable hard drives are a must. It took me 5 minutes to upgrade the hard drive in an old Toshiba laptop a few months back! (two screws, remove small cover on bottom of machine, swap drive)

Support for HD video in terms of removing load from the processor could mean a return to ATI as with the iMacs, in the form of a mobile Radeon 2xxx series graphics chip if it exists?

I seriously think they could take 20% off the price across the board too. Might make the MBP a more tempting option towards potential switchers compared to a PC laptop given the Bootcamp or Parallels option. Doubt it'd hurt Apple that much in the pocket.
User replaceable HDDs would be very nice.

8600m GT already have complete H264 acceleration on board and "half" VC-1, AMD HD 2600 got full of both.

Prices could go down here, they are 18.000 sek and I paid 15.000 sek but a similair confed Dell Vostro would be around 10.000 sek.
Ah but then they would lose those that also want to play DX10 games on their Bootcamp vista partitions.
2000-series are DX10 cards aswell. Heck even Intels integrated card are rumored to eventually add DX10 support thru drivers ..
To both of you (colto and cervaro), I'm sure Apple chose what chips would run comfortably in each system (MBP and iMac). Both the iMac and MBP use laptop versions of their respective GPUs, but there's a strong possibility that the ATI chips could have been hotter and/or had higher power requirements, making them unsuitable for use in the much thinner/power conscious MBP.
There exist laptops with 2600 now.
Really? I haven't heard a word about DX10 and ATI. That's awesome.
Nvidia where way earlier out with DX10, but current ATI cards are DX10 aswell, thought Nvidia will soon (?) release their 9800 and then they are far ahead aswell.

Some people hoped that ATIs card would be better than ATIs since it came later, but it wasn't.

Also it's NOT ATI longer, it's AMD, but whatever ;D

Except most Apple users don't care about Linux and AMD have released specs now and simple open drivers which will become better, so they are currently "better" in open source regards than Nvidia. Also their cards are DX10 cards aswell.

Last time I checked, AMD's open source drivers for Linux haven't been finalized (but then again, what is finalized in Linux, lol), and the Nvidia drivers are more "mature," so to speak.

Not likely, why?

I'll be one of those idiots. :p I'm going to try and order a MBP the day Leopard comes out. But then again, I can't wait for the MBP refresh (and if Leopard doesn't come out by the end of October, I'm ordering a MBP with Tiger). I really need to replace my current crap laptop.

I'm just quoting this for emphasis. The 8600m GT is just not powerful enough to utilize over 256 MB of RAM. Heck, the 8600 GT (note the lack of an "m" after the 8600) is not really even powerful enough to use over 256 MB of RAM. Keep in mind, these are gaming video cards, not workstation video cards. The 8600 GT and 8600m GT will get the job done, but they're just not optimized for workstation apps.;)

2000-series are DX10 cards aswell. Heck even Intels integrated card are rumored to eventually add DX10 support thru drivers ..

Yeah, the x3100 for the laptops fit DX10 specs, but I don't think drivers have been released for it yet, but it's still pretty weak.

That is the longest post I have ever seen! Congrat's on finding your password, I think.

Good post!

I think the idea of the small external screen that show's a logo when closed and there are not reminders if fascinating.

Better let the user use it all and if some cell fail you are screwed there obviously, but then just block that one from further usage and keep on using it. Better have a filesystem which tells you when something got corrupt thought, like ZFS.

If the user experiences a loss of storage, then there will be problems with that. It's better to let the consumer think that they have a slightly more limited amount of storage, in the event of failure. It's the same tactic used by other industires when they want to keep people safer and avoid pushing the envelope (for example, OTC drugs generally last much longer than the label suggests, but most drug companies will still recommend you throw it away after the date has passed).

It'll go to 12-inches

The subnotebook MacBook Pro Mini has been just a rumble until now.

Reports of people being told BY APPLE not to purchase a MacBook Pro yet because there is a new model coming in October.

I even had a talk with an Apple rep who said that I should check back on the Apple site DAILY to see when something new is released.

I'm calling it the MacBook Pro Mini for lack of a better name.

And I'm waiting til it shows up.

^^^ that's incredible. I really hope we get a mini-MBP. I love my 15" but I'll admit that something a little smaller for class would be nice.

The 12" screen is small, but if it was widescreen it might be alright. The 12" Powerbook is definitely the best notebook I have ever used.

This is interesting. I believe you, but it seems weird to have Apple telling people not to purchase.

BRING IT :apple:!!!! :D

Well its mid October now and I need a new MBP
How much longer should I wait? I cant wait til January
Maybe til mid November? I still need to decide whether to buy a 15in or 17in
O its tough!

I am in the same situation as you! Now that there is the $10 upgrade program, the only thing keeping me from getting the MBP 15 right now is basically the possibility of an update on oct. 26 (or if Apple releases a new Macbook non-pro, possibly a price drop?). I can't wait until November though!

November 12 Is Penryn Launch Day

Might get a speed bump to a 2.8 GHz 45nm Penryn on launch day. Intel is the gatekeeper and will say "release the hounds" on Monday November 12. If at all possible, I would hold out until Tuesday November 13 as the drop dead day for a MBP update this year.

Otherwise it will be at the San Francisco MacWorld Expo January 15th SteveNote.

Argh! Well first of all a genuine thanks for that info, but damn, so hard to wait as I need a MBP soon! I would just buy one now and not care, but battery life is very important to me and the 45nm might bump the battery life higher...

Does anyone know if Apple has a history of updating a product to a new chip on the launch day of the new chip? Or do they wait until a few months later, to get enough supply first?

EDIT: Wikipedia shows Penryn launch as Jan. 2008 though, is Wikipedia just wrong or what??

no mb update - maybe

I have read ad nauseam about possible updates for the mac book as I patiently (not very) wait to order a new mpb15 incher.
THE ONE THING that makes sense to me as why they will not release a mb update around the same time is; they want all eyes on Leopard... the magical OS we have been waiting all this year to get are grubby hands on. It makes sense for them to focus their PR push on that alone.

~IF however they are do update anything, it might not be a huge overhaul of a casing or design of a product but rather of minor speed bumps (that are so very welcome anyway).

just my $.02 in itunes store credit

~bv:apple:

i just wanna know NOW dammit
i ordered a mbp 17"online today then closed the window before pressing the confirmation of shipping and billing details
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I don't suppose anybody would know whether an updated MBP would include a couple of USB ports that are capable of powering the new aluminium keyboard like the iMac does.?

I currently use the new keyboard with a 3 year old G4 PowerBook and I have the mouse receiver plugged into the keyboard. When I plug my 2GB thumb drive into the keyboard at the same time, I get the popup message saying that I have to plug it into the laptop due to the keyboard not being able to power it.

If Apple did this, It would certainly give me impetus to purchase a new MBP when they are updated.

I believe what constrains your white keyboard from powering any devices is the keyboard itself, not your Powerbook. I'm not sure if this has been changed in the new keyboard, but just checkout Apple's page on it. I think I remember reading that you could use Flash drives with them.

You can use Flash drive with the keyboard, but only when connected to the aluminium iMac.

Here's what it says on the Apple website.

"Two USB 2.0 ports enable you to easily connect your Mighty Mouse as well as a high-speed peripheral such as a digital camera or printer.* Yes, we did think of everything.

*Devices that draw high power from the USB connection, such as iPods, hard drives and some flash drives, can only be used with the new keyboard when it is attached to the aluminum iMac."

If they can do it with the iMac, I'd like to see them do the same thing with the MBP.

That's for workstation/server chips.

Centrino chips aren't due until January 2008.

The 12" screen is small, but if it was widescreen it might be alright. The 12" Powerbook is definitely the best notebook I have ever used.

Pray explain why? The so called "widescreen" (1.6:1 aspect ratio) displays are a gimmick computer companies devised to reduce their cost while charging the same or more for their laptops as they did with a standard 5:4 screens. Simply put, at the same horizontal resolution a widescreen display shows 22% less information than a 5:4 display. It's like taking your screen and chopping nearly a quarter off the top.

Oops, my bad. I thought you were using the white keyboard

I'm guessing that most people use a hub when they want to plug in several things, so this might be your best bet. A powered USB hub is pretty cheap these days.

Have you seen on the wireless keyboard the light which comes on which is totally invisible when it's not on? I.e. there is no sign of the LED (or whatever it is) through the casing.
Imagine an apple logo like that on the back :)
