@JohnGrey
All great point regarding the market. I especially like your renaissance vs Hail Mary statement. And i agree, this probably is a Hail Mary, which is why they are (unofficially at least) risking their portable market. I have to point out that back in 2005/2006... the Wii too was very much a Hail Mary.

I don't know how this will end up playing out, because there's a generational divide and the market/consumer has changed so much in the past decade and a half. But I wonder if the Switch will be to the Wii, what the WiiU was to the GCN.

In my personal situation, I sat out their last generation, and I will be coming back for my Nintendo fix this time around. And I get it, N's consoles are for their first party titles primarily, and i'm a-OK with that. (Considering as of today the *only* current generation game I want to play is Last Guardian).

Only thing I disagree with, and this could be a personal thing, I dont see SM3DW or NSMB as "core" Mario titles. To me, Galaxy, SMS, SM64, etc are core titles. (I'm not sure Odyssey fits... it just looks weird, but thats another story)

.

Interesting comment. May I ask what console you grew up with? N64 / GCN? Because that statement seems odd for somebody who fell in love with Mario playing NES and SNES.

Although I wouldn't group them into core and non-core because it looks like at least each console gen gets nowadays minimum one "classical" 2d and one more inventive/playful 3d entry (and at least a dozen other titles with "Mario" slapped on). Odyssey would certainly be one of the latter category.

New Super Mario Brothers Wii:
As of September 30, 2016, the game has sold 29.90 million copies. This makes it the fourth best-selling Wii game as well as the second best-selling Mario game on the Wii console (behind Mario Kart Wii)
New Super Mario Brothers U:
As of September 30, 2016, New Super Mario Bros. U has worldwide sales of 5.45 million.
In comparison:
Super Mario Galaxy:
By the end of September 2016, Nintendo had sold 12.72 million copies of the game worldwide, making it the third best-selling non-bundled Wii game and the ninth best-selling Nintendo-published game for the Wii.

I would definitely call them core games.

Me? NES & Genesis.

For me "core" Mario titles are: Super Mario Bros (all 3 i think), Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2... and maybe Odyssey?

I think Peer of IGN mentioned having a similar opinion on this/last week's IGN Nintendo Voice Chat podcast.

Cheers

I view 64, Sunshine and the Galaxies to be less core Mario titles than NSMB, honestly, in that they don't carry much resemblance at all to their forebears, much the same way that Sonic Adventure and its subsequent titles are viewed as 'modern' Sonic as opposed to 'classic' Sonic.

Same here - haven't even played sunshine and the Galaxy ones. From the sound of it it's more like a 'must-have' or 'top-ten' list.
The 2d entries will forever be the 'core' for me. Even if they come across rather as rehashes or lack innovation nowadays.
I loved Mario64 as a kid but have no desire to revisit it while I don't really get bored with the Nes ones or SMW for example. That's why I'm a bit sceptical about Odyssey as well I guess.

SMS was indeed amazing. If we are going to get HD ports, it's a crying shame we haven't got one of SMS yet ...

GCN VC. Having never played SMS, i'd pay $60 for a HD upgrade.

I'd like to see Luigi's Mansion, F-Zero GX in VC.

PS>> Galaxy was amazing IMHO. Pinnacle of platforming.

One of the things that I would love to see is for Intelligent Systems to do strict remakes of SMRPG, Paper Mario and TTYD in the visual style of Color Splash and release the bundle as The Paper Mario Trilogy. If that happened, I would instantly buy a Switch. Just for those three titles. Of course, that's never going to happen.

Only thing that I'm looking forward to gaming wise right now is the Shenmue HD Collection and Shemnue III.

F-Zero GX is the best racing game SEGA has ever made ;) seriously ... It was an example of where Nintendo and good choice of licencing the IP out to a developer really paid off. The DX arcade and GX home version looks spectacular even today.

It's why it's such a shame Nintendo have let such potential rot over the last decade. it's because of the void that Fast Racing Neo was born from independent developers as a $15 digital download, and now they are repackaging it with as a full price $60 title as Fast Racing RMX on Switch ....

However, Starfox Assault by Namco shows where the wrong developer was chosen though ....

Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 were for me ruined by the Wii controls. I hated the Wii nunchuck and felt the game would have played so better using classic controller and yet they didn't support the CC. It was an example like Twilight Princess on Wii where Nintendo forcing wiggle controls on users actually detracted from enjoying the game completely.

@JohnGrey I never played any of the Mario RPGs, the Paper Mario games on the GCN looked pretty slick tho.

I gotta mention Factor 5's Rogue Squadron (which is why i picked up GCN back in the day). They had a trilogy set ready for release on the Wii, but they folded before it got to market :(

The ones that comes to my mind are Metroid Other M and that ridiculous "Metroid" game on the 3DS (made by the same devs who made Luigi's Mansion DM strangely enough).

Yeah Nintendo have turned out quite a few turkeys with their big IP's over last number of years.

Metroid just another casualty ...

Heck, I'd pay 60$ for SMS HD, and I've even played the original a *lot*.

To me, SMS is much better than Galaxy. The latter were a collection of gimmicks and small ideas, while SMS was pure 3D platforming, which i definitely prefers. Galaxy did have some good hard levels, but not nearly enough by far.

Nope, it's been one hit after another. Zelda, Metroid, Mario Party, Paper Mario, Star Fox. It's been one disaster after another, and the root of most of the problems follows back to Shigeru Miyamoto directly, or to people for whom he's been a patron, like Kensuke Tanabe (who produced Federation Force and Color Splash). One of the few things that I find positive about the Switch is that it seems that he's been relegated to a ceremonial position, which should've happened a decade ago, but unfortunately the damage to the company's culture has been done.

I skipped the Gamecube (gaming altogether) back then and all those games as well - wasn't only one of the Galaxy games on the wiiU VC? Thought about buying it but somehow it didn't really catch me that much. Controls looked like a turnoff as well.

Is the Sunshine game on the VC? That always looked quite funny, you're running around with that huge supersoaker, right?

Both Galaxy games are on the Wii U VC, but they still require motion controls. *blech*

Nope, there are, presently, no GameCube games available on VC. There have been persistent rumours that GameCube support would be coming to the VC, and have been for years. I don't know if it will ever happen though.

When I'm thinking Nintendo I think Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Tetris, Mario Kart, Pigmin...that's why I really dont care about rhe quantity of games as long as the quality is there.

Mario Deluxe looks cool although I don't like real life stuff in my games I'm gaming to escape from reality for a few hours

I'm really torn about the Switch. For sure it seems overpriced, especially without a pack-in. But on the other hand I really do miss Nintendo's "style" for what it is worth. My console gaming pretty much stopped at the PS2, which I rarely used. The load times was one factor, but games seemed to be requiring more and more "effort" for lack of a better word.

On the Nintendo side my last console was the GC, which was tolerable load time wise. But my favorite was the N64 (God I loved Wave Race). I wish I had never sold either of them. I intended to buy a Wii but it was not available anywhere every time I had the urge, and by the time it was the urge was gone.

Fast Forward to a month or so ago and I got an Xbox 1 S. Definitely great machine, but wow the games are huge. Right now I am playing Battlefield 1 and it is awesome. But, again, I feel it really takes a commitment. Heck, I can barely survive multiplayer for more than a minute unless I am hiding like a damn chicken. While I love the detail of the Xbox games I miss the simple times of Nintendo. Not necessarily simple... I thought the game play and physics of Wave Race were amazing. I am sure I could play it now and enjoy it.

I just am puzzled at Nintendo's pricing of the Switch, and a bit disappointed the Mario Kart won't be out at release (unless I read wrong). Guess I will wait and see how it goes.

Zelda was dire on the DS but what went wrong with Link Between Worlds? I thought it was amazing, and I haven't heard a bad word about it on forums or twitter. I thought Jam Bros was great too. Did they not do well? Or not well received?

I consider myself a "single player gamer" for the most part. Im not into the online competitive multi-player stuff. Only exceptions to me would be local multiplayer....star craft, Bond007, MK8, WiiSports...that sort of thing. I like to play through a single player game over a few months... that's why i like Zelda, Shadow of the Colossus, Metroid Prime, etc.

I'm stoked that the Switch is going back to carts. I'm waiting to hear about VC support for the system before i make my decision.

I played through Phantom Hourglass and liked it (wasnt a fan of the backtracking). Didnt get into Spirit Tracks. I think they got good reviews?

I think it did get good reviews. I wasn't a fan, I couldn't stand the art style or gameplay. I guess my dire comment was more personal than fact! Many of my friends liked it.

Link Between Worlds though. Man. One of the best games I've ever played, I wish I could forget it so I can play it again.

I got Link Between Worlds & Shovel Knight about a year ago... havent taken them out of their shrink-wrap... truth be told I havent picked up my 3DS in awhile :( too many screens competing for attention.
