I decided I'm going to pick it up, after watching a Youtube livestream of a 200% attempt it got me so excited to play it again, even though I already did the 200% on the Wii U. Watching that stream almost felt like I was actually playing it during every hair raising jump. I absolutely love this game, so even at full price I will buy it again, and hopefully Nintendo sells enough copies to make a sequel.

In case you're wondering, 100% is completing the game in normal mode with all collectibles found, 200% is completing in hard mode collecting all the KONG letters. Hard mode is instant death, no checkpoint and no Kong buddy for assist. The livestream was using the new Funky Kong character, which does make it much much easier. As for controlling it, you just have to get used to the heavy momentum of DK which is essential to finishing it.

I'm going to suck it up and buy it again :)
Nice work!

Haha! Yeah, by official standards those are the metrics for 100%ing/200%ing this game. (However, I won'tbe going quite that crazy) By my own standards though, I'm just counting 100% as completing the whole game with all the collectibles regardless of which character you use).
I usually never bother with doing them all over again in the extra hard modes. If I was going to, I would save something that difficult only for a very select few favorite games, so would most likely be a Zelda game if I ever do that. (but even on those, I tend never to do the Hero modes). I swear I will one day, but too many fun games to play at the moment to justify all the tedium and hair pulling. I prefer to enjoy them, and to have the satisfying feeling of having gotten through the story mode without missing collectibles. (if you know what I mean).

The Bayonetta games might be another that I actually do some day on the hardest mode setting. (as it's actually a mandatory requirement in order to unlock all the collectibles) - I hate it when games do that though, as I'll often never get round to doing it, which means missing out on alot of the game. But it's a damn good game, with lots of replay value, and isn't actually that hard to do. So this is one rare exception where it may happen. But we'll see.

Really pleased to have seen this though on Nintendo's website today...

NINTENDO HAVE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED CLOUD SAVES FOR SWITCH:
https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/
(when the online mode comes out, that is).

I had secretly been hoping for this for a long while now, and had heard rumors that it *might* happen. But hearing Nintendo themselves actually confirm this makes me really happy! I don't much care about the other stuff that the online service has, but for me, it's worth it just for the online cloud saves feature alone!

(I wonder if they'll finally let you do system transfers when this comes out? The page doesn't say). I must admit, I do worry what would happen to all my data if my switch ever needs replacing. Technically a cloud save could make this possible. (but would depend on whether it's linked to specific devices, or whether you can just log back into your brand new switch under your user account and all your digital games with their saves will still be there, if you see what I mean).

Even better would be if I could buy two switches and log in with either.
(as that would solve the battery life problem om long journeys, like plane flights, etc.) -Just bring both switches with you, and continue where you left off. -Job done!
(...hint hint, Nintendo. -Think how many more extra Switches you would sell!) ;)

For me, DK:TF is one such game :) I took my time though, probably took a few months of on and off play. It did get frustrating at times, but never unfair as the control is ultra precise. I usually don't like under water levels, but in DK it is so well done and I really enjoyed every minute of it. It really was quite satisfying finishing it. Oh and the soundtrack is amazing. Each time I hear one of the underwater level music I get goosebumps as it's so beautiful.

I love Nintendo, but hate their practice of making digital purchases tied to a console and not to your ID, conveniently making you buy multiple copies if you own multiple consoles. Actually, if you own multiple 3DS' (say one for each of your kids), they force to you buy multiple physical copies of Pokemon titles on the 3DS as it only allows for a single save file in each cartridge.

Ah now I get why when they release a new Pokemon title it always comes in pairs - Pokemon red and blue, sun and moon, etc - so that when you buy for each of your kids, you won't think you're buying the same title twice. Clever.

For me, DK was 45€, which is the price most games have when they release here where I live.

Does anyone know if I can play with any other characters apart from DK and Funky? Can I play as Diddy Kong for example?

I'm on world 2 right now.

I hope we get a third part and a port of Country returns

I played returns for the first time last year

I’d rebuy it for switch, down the road when I’m ready for a replay and it’s dirt cheap. This one is better tho no doubt and I loved returns.

But yes to a third one. DK forever

If you’re in Funky mode, you can switch to DK and the other Kongs will be available as Kong buddies. There’s no Kong buddies when playing as Funky, because Funky is Cranky/Diddy/Dixie rolled into one. He really does make the game quite easy. I might start a second game in normal mode

Yes, in Addition to Donky Kong and Funky Kong, you also have the option of playing as either Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong aswell.

Yeah, my sentiments exactly! I really hope the switch version will be linked to your Nintendo ID this time instead of linked to your device like how WiiU and 3DS did it. It's possible that Switch will do it properly though rather than their old way. (may that's just wishful thinking on my part) but they way the did it on Mario Run for iPhone was multi device, so there is some hope, and I actually want to encourage it. So I find it helps to be as vocal about this as possible.

So it looks like there will be no Virtual Console for the Switch. Bummer.
Yeah, that part sucks. So far at launch they're only bringing out 10 NES games. However, I think they will add more games later, and it will end up being just like Virtual Console was eventually with alot more titles as they bring them all out. (they tend to do it incrementally anyway. -That's exactly what they did with Virtual Console, so is kind of the same thing, except we're basically starting all over again).

One other slight difference that they seem to be doing this time is that this time instead of being just straight ports, they're adding some extra functionality to the games, like support for additional players. (don't think they actually needed it to be honest) so not worth the effort in my opinion.

But the part I do like though is that the new way of doing things will mean that we won't have to keep buying new virtual console games. It'll basically work just like Netflix (only cheaper) where once you have the subscription (which I'll be having anyway just for the cloud saves) any games that are on there you just download there and then without having to pay more money for them.

So while the game selection will be tiny at first, it will eventually be slightly a better system than what we had before. So for less than 20 bucks a year, I can't complain.

(...okay, I might complain a little!) haha

Did you read this somewhere? I thought the roadmap kind of hinted that is was coming Q2? But if this is true, I think that pretty much killed the switch for me... I was really looking forward to playing games like the original Metroid and Zelda on the road :(

It seems like they only appear as buddies. I had the impression I could change and play as them on the go. Either way the game is awesome.

I saw this as well but for a Switch that is played 95% of the time by my 5 year old, $20 a year is fantastic for him to play all the NES classics as he is a HUGE mario fan.

I know a lot of hardcore players were disappointed but for my population, its fantastic.

Virtual Console in the traditional sense is not returning, but subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online service will get free access to NES games, and they will be enabled for online multiplayer, online taking turns, and online voice chat. :)

I remember when they announced the plan last year that the free games are rotated monthly, meaning the games from the prior month will be gone when they replace them with a new set of games the following month. Is it still going to be the case?

$20 a year is very reasonable. However, Nintendo has never charged for online play before, so I imagine some people are not going to be pleased when they can no longer race Mario kart online without paying.

Yeah, in all honesty, I thought that they were fully playable too. (All the trailers were touting them as playable, but perhaps they just meant as buddies). But I agree, that's a bit misleading if that's the case.

(like I say, I only dipped my toe in a tiny but back when I had it on the WiiU, so I hardly ever played it beyond a bit of the first level). Will be playing it properly when I get it on the Switch. (but I'll be playing Hyrule Warriors first, which comes out in a few days, so Donkey Kong will probably be the game I play straight after).

The way I had always presumed it was done though, was just by selecting your character at the main menu screen before starting. So if she's not there, then perhaps either she's not at all (or has to be unlocked later after completing something).

I've just looked it up to double check for you though, and even ign is saying that Dixie is a playable character.
http://www.ign.com/wikis/donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze/Dixie_Kong

(but no mentions of any unlocking needing to be done)

Perhaps someone else on here who has played it properly can answer your question about whether there is a way for Dixie and Diddy to be unlocked as actual playables (the way that we thought it could), or whether just as kong buddies only throughout the entire game. Bit disappointing if that's the case though. (That said, being as I'll probably play the whole thing through as Funky anyway, it won't really make that much difference to me). If you do find out they can be unlocked as playables though, be sure to let me know how it's done.

Back on the Wii U days I remember reading on a gamefaqs post that you could unlock them after beating the campaign on super hard

Thanks for the info, that's really helpful! Much appreciated. Thanks also for the tip about looking on GameFAQs.
I looked this up, and I did find a GameFAQs post that says it can be done also.
What he's saying though is that it works like this:

"When you collect all the KONG letters, and beat the game, you unlock hard mode which allows you to play as any character you like. Other than that, no.

Of course you seem to be aware that you can do it in multiplayer, but the primary player will always have DK.

Additionally, when DK has Diddy on his back, it "feels" just like it would when you play with Diddy."

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/718938-donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze/70981787

Hope this helps. Anyone on here that's actually done it that can confirm the actual method?
(I'm surprised there aren't more articles about this, as I'm sure plenty of people will have been wondering the same).
I bet that being as it's not super obvious though, that most people probably just assumed it can't be done and never got as far as trying.

What else aside from KONG letters and beating the game gets you 100%? All the puzzle pieces too?

I’m 66% with some puzzle pieces but all KONG

That final boss took hours of trying I sucked at it

Sad I beat the game :( I was gonna pace myself but I was genuinely addicted just like DKCR

Tropical Freeze is so great.
