Well. Um. Uh.

Joseph Henry Christmas

Alrighty then. Even though it’s just a rumor, I know the writing is on the wall. Even without this rumor, well the S9+ is just so damn good anyway. But a rumor like this just solidifies an idea I’d been kicking around.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner and my mom waiting to give me Christmas money since she didn’t see me over the holidays due to my pneumonia, I’ve been thinking of getting a red iPhone 8 Plus to go with my colorful purple S9+. Since I decided the 8 Plus is probably my ultimate iPhone (despite lacking a headphone jack ) and I don’t feel inclined to move on from this design and feature set, well...ever. Though realistically I know I’m going to have to at some point. But I’m gonna rock silver and red 8 Pluses until they can’t be rocked anymore.

I know Apple is going to perfect Face ID and do incredible things with OLED and LCD and cameras and so forth. I just don’t care what they are going to do with iPhones anymore. Not while iOS is being fixed. Not while Siri is being worked on. Not while Touch ID is gone.

I’m switching between the S9+ and my Pixel2 for mostly everything that doesn’t involve keeping up with contacts via iMessage. Oh and I use my iPhones for navigation because Apple Maps is usually better for me than other options where I live.

But anyway, my S9+ is just about perfect. The camera on it is everything I could wish for on a Smartphone. The battery life is a little “meh” but not a problem. Especially since I run 2 phone lines. Heh, and I’ve also got the extraordinary little Pixel 2 with a whopping 2 year warranty.

Yeah...so okay. Well I’m just going to hunker down with these great phones until...well...

...I don’t know...the zombie apocalypse? o_O

FWIW I don’t think Samsung will do a bad version of a notched display. I don’t even think Apple’s was horrible. I’d rather not have had it, but it wasn’t really a problem.

I’m just feeling a bit...well, there are no words that come to mind yet. It’s too early. I’ve missed breakfast and I desperately need another coffee.

The notch isn't a disease; it's a compromise.

Two things, though
  1. Apple does the best job justifying its existence
  2. I wonder whether each brand is just accepting the compromise or if they're racing to figure out how to lose the notch

Lmao. As MKBHD said in his video about bezels, this is just a phase in innovation (if you even want to call this innovation) and may or may not become a standard in smartphones.

but the question is will there still be a chin at the bottom? I really like the fact there isn't one on my iphone x. I'm used to the notch now and actually like the way it is. I know long term the plan is a full glass phone.

Hopefully they don't add the chin back. As much as I dislike the iPhone X I'm happy they didn't include a chin.

I’ll agree that a notch isn’t ideal aesthetically—I don’t think anyone could argue that it looks better than a symmetrically designed display. That being said, after using an X since launch, it really doesn’t bother me or distract me in daily use. If its presence means a smaller overall device and especially no chin/forehead, I’m fine with a notch on my phones. In my experience, that portion of the screen isn’t generally used unless I’m playing a game in landscape or an occasional video whose ratio is even flatter than 18:9. Most videos are still 16:9 at most which results in pillars on either side and thus the notch doesn’t come into play.

I do dislike so many other OEMs so quickly mimicking Apple, not because I think Apple has some exclusive right to the design, but rather that they aren’t sticking to their own particular style. Samsung has a pretty definitely style of its own and think they should stick with it as it’s a hallmark of their phones. That being said, I think the display in that image looks just great—no chin or forehead to speak of, just a pseudo ‘widow’s peak’. :p

I call fake news based on previous rumors of Samsung removing headphone jack, adding 3D touch, etc. that turned out false. Notch is a compromise in design for lower tier companies that don't have the engineering know-how to implement in-screen sensors which is the holy grail of bezelless design.

Until that happens notchless with small symmetrical bezels > notchless with bigger bezels > smaller notch > bigger notch.

For me it's not so much the asthetics of it all. Its the loss of information and functionality. Below is a side by side of my 8 plus and iPhone X. You can see so much more information on the 8 plus than on the X. I mean even simple things like battery percentage, Bluetooth, alarm.

It seems lately the iPhone keeps losing functionality.

I wouldn’t exactly call that SO much more but I get it, we all have different preferences and needs. For me, I leave BT on all the time and can still see the battery meter. If I need to see an exact percentage or the other couple icons (which is very infrequent at best), I pull down to see the Control Center. I’ll take the reduced top bezel for that trade off.

I do miss the way the the Plus model mimics the iPad by giving additional options in landscape, such as extra rows in email apps. I'd hope to see than on a Plus model of the X design.

Likely the X Plus will fix that. The X is not a full replacement for the Plus iPhone.

A few weeks ago vlogger MKBHD did an excellent video on the notch "problem". While the finger print reader can be moved to the back, navigation buttons to the screen and speaker to the upper edge of the screen, the front facing camera is outstanding.

There is no easy way to conceal or move it. If we are lucky the front facing camera will in 2 years or so be so small that it can be hidden amongst pixels.

Exactly! :)

I am willing to bet Samsung are loving all the companies copying Apple, as all it does is help Samsung stand out more.

They know putting the notch would remove the whole point of an Infinity Display.

Ever since the S3, Samsung have worked on Always Differentiating themselves from Apple. When Apple put Metal backs on their iPhones, Samsung made glass Sandwich Galaxy's which Apple had to come back to with the X and 8.

Having a huge physical home button? Providing tiny place for camera and sensors? Yes cheap Chinese mud range imitators. Something to get some into a knot.

Having rear FPS was enough before it existed to get Samsung fans into a fuss too.

The narrow form factor is a MUCH worse disease IMO, closer to a plague. Let me get this straight, the next Samsung flagship will be too narrow, have those curved edges AND have a notch? Yeah, no thanks. As much as I enjoy getting the new version of Android 9 months late and being unable to root my phone, I think I'll pass.

Yeah, I rather like the iPhone X design and feel that it's superior to any other "bezel less" design out there. The entire uproar over the notch is really baffling to me anyhow, it's just a bezel that doesn't go all the way across, what's the big deal? Look at it as a plus, the space that the status bar used to take has now been moved up and you gain a bit of screen real estate. It seems to me that phone makers are just using common sense.

I'll argue that it does indeed look better. When I initially saw leaked pics I hated it. But now I actually like it and highly prefer it over a full sized bezel. I think that on some subconscious level I really appreciate the boost in functionality that it offers by moving the status bar up. I'm definitely a sucker for functionality and this wouldn't be the first time that I like something that maybe not as aesthetically pleasing because it improves functionality. To flip that a bit, whenever I get onto a non notch phone I become slightly annoyed to not find the notch because I know there is wasted screen space.

I think other oems aren't copying Apple out of fashion, I don't believe there is a big vibe out there saying the notch is aesthetically pleasing. But as you say, there is much more of a feeling that the notch is not aesthetically pleasing. But it's not surprising that oems realize the benefits of a notch, and that reality dictates you still need space for sensors and front camera.

I have major issues with notches - they really irritate my sense of proportion and there is no way I could ever use a phone with one. I know it's not rational and people say "you get used to it" but it's how I feel and I can't change that.
With all that out of the way, I really hope they don't put one on the Note 9 because the way it's going it could be my last phone for a fairly long time. If they do, then I'll stick with my Note8 until it falls apart and just pray there are phones available without a notch.

Yeah but look at the MASSIVE waste of space the plus has. And those phones aren't even fully lined up, the plus should be moved up more to line up the status bars. I can't wait for September so I can get a X-plus though, the regular X is just too small for my eyes.

I do agree about the battery percentage though, I completely hate that they got rid of it.

I'm still super happy with my S6 edge+. I'm patiently waiting out this awkward phase in smartphones (fingerprint reader on the back... notches... no mainstream 4K displays yet... speakers finally getting better but still not that good... batteries still on the small side).

Just got my battery replaced and I'm sittin pretty for now! Phone runs fantastic. I'm waiting for a Galaxy X or Note 10 ideally, if nothing else goes wrong.
