To some, it has two giant notches that go all the way across the screen on the top and bottom.

No, because the phone is a few mm longer to accommodate. Hence why the X, on paper had a larger screen than the 8+... in actual use, we saw that the 8+ have more viewing screen...

Same with the XR, which I have and love so far... It claims 6.1" of screen, but put it up against a 6.1" Android device that doesn't have a notch, and load the same full screen video, and you will see a big difference. By the time you remove the notch areas, and account for the oddball elongated aspect ratio, Apple's 6.1" it closer to 5.5" with the dead space from the notch and the letterboxing that the aspect ration requires.

If you try to mitigate that by "zooming" in, then you actually have the notch extending into the video you are trying to watch...

I do agree with most folks, that it's a minor annoyance and not the end of the world, but how can anyone claim that this setup makes it better? It's one thing to say "I can live with it", it's complete BS to try and say its a benefit or a GOOD thing...

I’ve never really noticed then notch on the Max. The screen is big enough to basically ignore it.

Note 9:
Quad Speakers
Jack
Pencil Support

2019 Galaxy Phones:
Foldable

Apple Designs:
Stale

Note 9 doesn't just have pencil support, it comes with the pencil that manages to insert and store seamlessly into the phone itself, so you don't have to carry it separately, like Apple requires... They have had that feature, since what, 2015?

It's an awful design if I ever saw one. Anyone that praises that ugly thing is crazy.

And that's really where most of these arguments back and forth, stem from.

We all know why Apple did it. It was compromise for Face ID and bezel reduction. That's a far cry from the marketing spin of how it's a "groundbreaking aesthetic to enhance your viewing pleasure and it totally makes the phone better" or whatever crap they are claiming.

THAT is what I feel like we are arguing about. Instead of everyone just calling it what it is, we see the Apple Loyalist Brigade praising it as if it is a great thing and its somehow for our benefit, when deep down we all know that it isn't...

Apple wanted Face ID, they didn't have the tech yet to do it properly, so it was hold back Face ID for a year or two, or carve out part of the screen and add bunny ears and push it out the door.

I wonder what Jobs would have said, had he lived to see this design... Would he have approved, or fired whoever said this was a good idea? LOL

It may be the way different people use the device. Almost everything I do on my phone is vertical, and the notch disappears. There is something about how the curves of the body and display match the bottom corners of the dock that makes everything feel seamless. I don't watch 2 hour Netflix movies on my iPhone horizontally, so it's not an issue for me watching a quick video every now and then.

For the way I use my phone, having both a forehead and a chin would feel like a step back.

No, on paper the iPhone 8 Plus screeen is bigger. Including the notch, the iPhone X offers 12.97 square inches of display. Although it’s actually a bit smaller because of the displays rounded corners. The iPhone 8 Plus display is 13.04 square inches. With or without the notch of the X the 8 Plus has the bigger screen.

The notch eliminates “wasted space” taken by the status bar...for me at least. Most of my time is spent in webpages, messages, and emails. I honestly really don’t care, the “notch” does not bother me.

And perhaps if "OMG, yet another notch thread" is your response, perhaps the fact that there is a new one, daily, a year after launch... maybe that should tell you that the notch is not as adored as your have convinced yourself it is?

I mean, if the same person started a new thread daily, yeah... but that's not the case, is it?

Don't have to convince myself anything about the notch. I've watched the discussions over the past year and played with the X some when the opportunity presented itself. Then I got the MAX. Unless you've used it for a few weeks min, you can't really make a determination of how the notch affects your usage of the device. My conclusion is it's not a problem and if anything, it gets some information up and out of the way.

The fact that some people can't help themselves in creating new threads about the same "issue" instead of piggybacking on an original thread is evidence that the individual just wants attention. And/or they have another agenda.

Heck - based on your logic - Millions of iPhoneX's have been sold. If one new thread per day by different people were created against the notch, that's still a minuscule amount compared to sales. Perhaps more people don't care about it than you and the OP care to admit. ;-)

I never get used to it. I only use wallpapers that hide it, but that's impossible when playing videos because it puts huge pillar boxes on either side of the video unless I zoom the video. I still have an 8+ refurb that I thought about returning, and every day I ask myself why I'm returning it when I enjoy videos and web browsing more on it than on the XR.

I do like to think that Apple will play a part in citizens of a future dystopian state choosing notch haircuts.

There will always be some sort of compromise due to front facing cameras and sensors regardless.. Samsung has shown the S10/Note 10 will use holes drilled in the display by a laser for the various camera/sensors. When viewing content, you see black dots where each camera or sensor is placed, so instead of a notch you’ll have a few black dots to interfere with the content be viewed. I have no issues with the notch, I don’t even notice it and if Apple follows Samsung’s lead with the holes in the display, that won’t bother me either..

Not had my phone long and to be honest I don’t even realise it’s there it doesn’t bother me

Huh? Tell me where I am wrong on how Apple Pay works with FaceID then.

How do you pay with Apple Pay on iPhone X at retail? Here's what it said when I looked it up:

Double click the Side button to bring up Apple Pay.
Look at your iPhone X to authenticate with Face ID.

So again, why should I have to doubleclick anything to use Apple Pay? Why should I have to look at the screen? I just pick up my iPhone 8+ and keep my thumb on the home key and bring it near the NFC and *poof* done.

My point being that making a reasonable assessment of FaceID requires you to use it for a reasonable period of time. You’re just making mountains out of molehills.

I live in London and you can use NFC on overland and underground trains here. The volume of people passing through the gates is huge and any delay for a person fumbling for their payment method causes immediate backlogs and just p*sses everybody behind them off. I have lost count the number of times I have seen people struggle with TouchID on their iPhones or similar on other brands. I have a XS and breeze through every single time.

It’s an awful design compromise that will be mercilessly ridiculed as soon as it’s gone. For now, of course, people who have paid $1000+ for a phone that has it will claim it doesn’t matter.

Would be quite so bad if at least face ID were faster than touch ID. It's not.

It definitely is a slower process using Face ID, fortunately I don’t use Apple Pay that often.

I really miss the home button but I must admit I’m getting used to it. I like the way you can unlock say my banking app or eBay app with Face ID without having to press any button

I am used to it. I like having more screen on my XR than my old 7+ and like the gestures of of the home button/slider too. Face ID is awesome. Works every time even in the dark and or with sunglasses. Don’t miss the old iPhone style at all.

Considering the speed differences are literally milliseconds apart in unlocking between Face ID and Touch ID, I would hardly say that is anything to complain about. For the record, iOS 12 seemingly made Face ID even faster when unlocking.

Face ID is actually faster in practice for authenticating passwords on the iPhone, since I don’t need to put my finger on the home button. It just automatically scans and authenticates.

I don’t notice it much. But I would disagree that it’s a ‘notch’ at all. They are ‘horns’. Yeah I know, bring on the jokes lol.

If the notch went all the way across, it would be a ‘forehead’. All Apple did was make use of the completely unused ends of the ‘forehead’ for icons that would otherwise take up screen space below the ‘forehead’ if it had one.
