Looks like the Debian folks are treating the ppc crowd for the new year already - with Debian 12 - happy new year! No iso yet BUT as of yesterday installing the latest Debian ppc64 image (20220328) with the latest sources (using mate so far in my hands) not now only results in kernel version 6 being installed but Debian 12 altogether

I don't know if gnome for Debian 12 is ready though and it does look like it's still work in progress though, e.g. several deps seem to be broken e.g. libstdc++6 v12 is not detected as >=11 by many older deps so I would advise backing up any debian 11 installation and proceed with caution, unless someone else has upgraded without any trouble already?

Cheers,
I see Deb 12 MATE on an Apple Display!!!! I have both a G4 and G5 I’ve tried to install Deb 12 on but cannot get it to play nice with the Apple Displays, just a black screen. The G4 has an Nvidia GeForce4 MX and the G5 has a Radeon 9600 XT. Any hints as to how to get the Deb install to drive these would be awesome!!

I think that you need to use the DVI port if you're not already using it - I could never get anything out of the ADC port under debian...

Hi guys, has anyone managed to install full gnome (not flashback etc, but gnome wayland) under debian 12 ppc64? It's working great under debian 11 ppc64 (using a radeon 5770) but it fails to install under debian 12 (but e.g. mate installs fine), the reason being that the latest gdm3 isn't available on ppc64. Tried to compile it and its deps but mutter fails to compile... All the required binaries are available for ppc64el (and thus debian 12/gnome works great on my tyan power8, just can't figure out how to use acpi shutdown which strangely works fine under ubuntu ppc64le) but not for ppc64... Does anyone know of a snapshot when gnome was working under debian 12 ppc64 (i.e. gnome, gdm3 and all deps being available under debian 12 ppc64)?

Cheers,

Ya, I bit the bullet and bought a DVI port monitor for the G5 and removed the Apple Display completely. It’s nice but I’m a sucker for driving as many monitors as possible if the ports are available. I will say that if I run my OSX drive it WILL drive both monitors.

Can you please remind me, what videocard installed in your G5? (M.b. there is something with dual-DVI ports, flashable with PPC ROM for change? :) ).

The card doesn’t have dual DVI ports, just an apple display port and 1 DVI port. The point is moot since I’ve abandoned Debian and have installed Adelie instead. I was never able to resolve the issue with the repos and their lack of ppc64 support.

only for the proof of concept . . . maybe someone got a descent slicer like cura or prusa installed on a ppc Debian environment. I attached the output of neofetch and the impossible situation from apt while trying to install prusa-slicer on your powerbook.

it seems to be impossible?!
