Even a 1,1 mp can do the same with 2 titans for opencl, the bandwidth is not an issue. For tb opencl card will also do the job !

The Pascal successor to the GTX 980 will be even more powerful more efficient and of course compatible with Mac Pro towers. It's the true successor to the seven series. The nine series was just a modest transition to efficient design.

With a minimum 33 % silicon die shrink from 30nm to sub 20nm that may be an understatement!

Are you talking about a complete turnkey solution - card in a case with a single power cable and on/off switch?

Yes, but you will need to run an installer and stay in kext dev mode, just like with various trim enablers.

Have a metals guy coming next week to figure out enclosures.

BTW, this was entry level $500 Mini that equalled 12 Core Dual D700 nMP.

I updated that post at the same time as your reply because I actually meant the 10 series which will still likely be Maxwell. ;)

Mine was posted via tapatalk in the car sitting in mad Friday afternoon London traffic :D

----------

My friends broadcast company in the UK are preparing to build a range of eGPU enclosures. Nothing in time for the NAB show in Vegas next year though sadly, but I will be attending the show with prototype CAD designs to sound out clients under NDA. Perhaps something ready for the IBC show in Amsterdam later in 2015.

All on the initial drawing board stages now and they will be innovative designs too - but a huge amount of CAD work to be done as they will not at all be basic boxes.

If these box are for GPGPU processing (Cuda), could they be used with Tesla card instead of regular GPU?

The innovative enclosures on the drawing board are multi interface and therefore multi platform too and not only for a Mac. Apple have disgracefully deserted the high end broadcast/compute market with FCPX and the 6,1 never mind just other suitable lower end applications such as gaming. But if you are applying it to a Macintosh platform then you'd best contact MVC for your requirements via a pm about tesla products as he is the card innovator point man to get them working on OS X in the future.

Having had over 20 years in ingenious design, efficiency and outsourcing some key manufacturing to China to the broadcast market to save costs we know what we do best and leave the other experts in their fields to do what they do best, particularly regarding the Mac.

Not going to happen. Not from Apple anyway.

You mean like how everyone was so sure Apple would never put HDMI on their machines? Or make notebooks with non removable batteries? Or favor USB over Firewire? Or switch to Intel processors? Or make a phone without a physical keypad?

I can go on and on... if anything is clear, it's that under Tim Cook, the past is not a predictor of the future. Statements like that always come back to bite you in the end because you don't know what Apple is going to do anymore than the rest of us.

That would be nice, but that's not going to happen.

Would be kind of stupid also... Sorry for saying that.

Screen tend to last longer than computer. I've replaced my PC three time but I'm still using my Asus 24" LCD...

In three years the GPU in your computer will have overtaken the builtin GPU in performance and features and with no way to bypass the builtin one you will never be able to enjoy them unless you replace that very expensive and quite functionnal screen...

which would result more sells of displays at Apple....and we all know they love to make money.

I thought Apple was a more ecological friendly company (not really, with non replacable batteries)... Think of the e-waste produced by screen who quickly become obsolete.

But what if *looks around sneakily and whispers* Apple would allow us users to actually _replace_ the GPU in the screen?

Wellllll. Technically the GPU in the iMac is replaceable. It's on an MXM card. But it's way too deep in the case.

"There is no user servicable part inside"... :D

1- You have to find an MXM version of the GPU you want. You won't find them boxed in store.
2- You then have to unglue the screen. Which voids the waranty.
3- Unplug everything inside and partially if not totally remove the components. Again the waranty thing.
4- Find and buy a new sealing sticky tape/gasket. Not available in store either.
5- Plug everything back and hope you didn't forget anything
6- Glue back the screen

Yeah, it is replacable, just not by anybody unlike replacing a GPU in a modern PC case where you don't even need a screwdriver to do the job...
