The Pascal successor to the GTX 980 will be even more powerful more efficient and of course compatible with Mac Pro towers. It's the true successor to the seven series. The nine series was just a modest transition to efficient design.
With a minimum 33 % silicon die shrink from 30nm to sub 20nm that may be an understatement!
We will be offering a limited number of eGPU options
Are you talking about a complete turnkey solution - card in a case with a single power cable and on/off switch?
Yes, but you will need to run an installer and stay in kext dev mode, just like with various trim enablers.
I updated that post at the same time as your reply because I actually meant the 10 series which will still likely be Maxwell.![]()
If these box are for GPGPU processing (Cuda), could they be used with Tesla card instead of regular GPU?
Not going to happen. Not from Apple anyway.
I think the most likely option would be that they release a new monitor with a built in GPU that can run 5k etc on your MBA, and so on.

That would be nice, but that's not going to happen.
Would be kind of stupid also... Sorry for saying that.
Screen tend to last longer than computer. I've replaced my PC three time but I'm still using my Asus 24" LCD...
In three years the GPU in your computer will have overtaken the builtin GPU in performance and features and with no way to bypass the builtin one you will never be able to enjoy them unless you replace that very expensive and quite functionnal screen...
which would result more sells of displays at Apple....and we all know they love to make money.
But what if *looks around sneakily and whispers* Apple would allow us users to actually _replace_ the GPU in the screen?Screen tend to last longer than computer. [...]

Like they let you replace the battery in your laptop or the GPU in your iMac?...
Wellllll. Technically the GPU in the iMac is replaceable. It's on an MXM card. But it's way too deep in the case.
