My read/write performance atm?

My post from a thread I started in July of last year:

Lou

Thanks for your clear info's! But, what about fixing 2 EVO's that are RAID0 on the DUO X2? Do have any idea if the RAID0 will be intact when replacing them on the DUO X2? I'm quite unsure if that will be the case.

What about my read/write performance atm?

Should I just pass on this FW update and wait until I really get degrading R/W speeds on my RAID0?

Thanks in advance.

^^^^I can only give you experience:

1. I updated my Series 840 (not EVO) awhile ago, and used the Firmware Update not the Restoration software, When I did it, I lost no data.

2. I called Samsung to inquire why the Firmware Update for the 840 EVO did not list the new Firmware, but had to be downloaded from the Restoration Software. He told me that it was an interim fix, and the full Firmware Updater would be available at a later date. He also advised me, that if I wasn't having issue on my EVO, that I would better off waiting for the full update. I am not having an issue, so I will not be updating at this time.

Thanks a lot Lou for your reply! I'll be postponing the update for now.

Today I was fiddling on my MP to find a way to make a Ms Dos USB flash drive for the FW update. Never had such a hard way GooGling to find a straight answer...

Cheers!

So for a Mac user with no optical drive this tool is of no use?

I also don't use boot camp so not sure how to proceed

Hey guys, SUCCESS! I posted earlier about the Restoration tool not working on my mid-2011 27" iMac. I finally got it to work! All it took was for me to dismount and power off my external Thunderbolt backup drive. I then booted the CD and everything worked the way it was supposed to! Hope this helps those of you who aren't having any luck!

^^^^You create it, instructions are on the Samsung site along with the update.

Lou

I'm all up and running, fine so far. Not sure if its any faster. Again, if anyone wants a free boot cd I can mail it to them for free since it'll probably end up in the trash.

Can you do this via a USB enclosure?

Why don't u read the documentation first?

General Limitations

......

2) The Samsung Performance RestorationDOS software does not work with SSDs connected via the SCSI controller interface and USB to SATA interface.

......

Just tested, you MUST remove the tempo card in order to get this tool to work. Otherwise, it will stuck at "scaning the 840 Evo drives" (the very begining stage).

Even empty card will cause issue.

I am not sure can you fix a RAIDed SSD. My guess is possible. After you backup the data. Simply install the Evo in the bcakplane or optical bay. Then fix it one by one.
Same goes for the Solo x2. I were stock at the scanning part, and then suddenly recalled you have posted something about the add-on card.
For that, I thank you.

If I read this thread correctly, has ANYONE has found a way to do the "performance restoration fix" on MB Pro's that don't have a CD/Superdrive installed?

Has ANYONE found a way to boot on an external USB stick and do the update?

Has ANYONE found a way to do the update with a external/USB CD-ROM?

If anyone has any way to do it, please let me know where to get the detailed info.

Thanks a million, IAN. :)

Running the Samsung Drive Restoration Utility on Macs with no optical drive

Hi,

I did it on my Mac Mini last night using a USB Drive. Had nothing to do so came up with the following method that worked:

1) Download UNetbootin.

2) Use UNetbootin to create a FreeDOS USB Bootable Drive.

3) Download the Samsung Drive Restoration Utility Version 1.0 (1.26MB) (Bootable USB disk) download from the Samsung Site.

4) Extract and copy the 840Perf folder to the root of the Bootable USB you have created.

5) Restart your Mac holding the Option Key to get to the Boot Menu.

6) Choose the USB Drive you Created.

7) When the FreeDOS Menu loads just choose "Load FreeDOS without drivers"

8) Type the following: C:

9) Then Type: cd 840Perf

10) Finally Type: perf.exe

The Samsung utility should then load so you can follow the options :)

but you have to keep in mind that Mac Pros (except the 2013 model) won't start anything but OS X from USB.

Really? WOW didn't know that!

The above works on a Later 2012 Mini if anyone has one of them :D

yep, true. thing is: I don't know exactly when and on what machines Apple started to support booting non-OSX operating systems from USB. it's possible that Macs and MacBooks from 2012 were the first ones to support this...

WARNING! check your USB disks-# before choosing drive to format!

Thanks for sharing your workflow!

BE AWARE! Using the UNetbootin to create a FreeDOS USB Bootable Drive, take caution of what disk it sees as USB. In my case my internal Windows 8 Pro x64 Bootcamp partition is listed as default!

Terminal -> "diskutil list"

UNetbootin default disk selection = /dev/disk6s2 = internal (bay#2) Boot Camp partition!

My USB Drive is /dev/disk9s1

I just tried this on a early 2011 13" MB Pro and the UNetbootin USB Drive won't boot after holding the option/alt key. It doesn't even show up as a "boot option"... :(

I wonder if burning a CD/DVD with the UNetbbotin/FreeDOS info, and using an external USB CD-ROM would produce positive results? hmmmm...

I just don't have any cd/dvd's on hand... :(

But Mac Pros, prior to the nMP, have at least one SuperDrive installed from the factory, so that's really not an issue.

not an issue in this case (840 EVO updater). but it is an issue if you want to boot, let's say, MS-DOS from a USB device. that's when Plop Boot Manager comes into play. the Mac Pro will boot the bootmanager from the CD, from there I can hop to the USB stick and start MS-DOS.

Perhaps I'm not sure what you mean, but... What's the use of booting a CD/DVD and then hop to an USB? Toast the FW update to the CD/DVD and you're all set to go?

I have two using Intel motherboard Raid in a PC and the software can't manage them. Only if the drives are ordinary OS drives.
