Finally got hold of the last episode....

That Vanwall is fantastic! - I wish they'd given it to the Stig though.

And I used to like the Cayman but now, not so sure - I think it's ugly. It's like a very old 911 in size and performance. A used 911 (especially a 993) would be better.

Funny that you argue about the Scorpio - I think that would have sold well in the states as a "sports sedan". I absolutely love the concept of a radio-controlled full size car too!

It was also hilarious watching that footballer get up on two wheels - I was secretly hoping he'd roll, I wonder if any "star in a reasonably priced car" will ever do that or total their car in some other way.

What's up with footballers in Lincoln Navigators anyway? Do they even sell those in the UK or are they imports. A Navigator is just a short wheelbase F-150 pickup with a new body and lots of gaudy extras. Very pimp. But right now the Escalade and H2 are hotter in the US for sports stars and hip-hop "artists".

Last month's Evo had exactly this test, a Cayman vs a 993. iirc the Cayman was judged to be the better/faster car in real world usage but it is also almost twice as expensive.

Scorpio was Ford's attempt at a 'luxury' car, in the end they just bought Jag to the dismay of everyone!

Lincoln Navigators are not very popular really they are imports and would never sell mainstream over here, most roads just can't cope with Chelsea tracktors let alone them hideous things.

nor could the average person put up with what would be a hurrendous fuel bill.

bloody government and their fuel tax

not that i want a lincoln navigator, i just want to spend less on fuel!

A friend of mine had a Ford Expedition, which is a cheaper (but near-identical)version of the Lincoln Navigator. It was expensive to fix for no good reason, and the gas mileage could dip into the single digits at times. And it was HUGE. A total piece of crap for anything but towing - in which case you might as well get the F-150 and save $10,000.

Not to mention it was very slow, and about as much fun to drive as a prison shower.

I agree with that. The 993 was (along with the 930 IMHO), the most beautiful 911. It is still my favorite. The current one seems a little soulless by comparison.

I still think I like the Cayman as a concept - a cheaper porsche coupe - but I think that porsche would be better off resurrecting the 944 with a turbo flat 4 to compete with, say, the Integra and others.

The Cayman and Boxster really are the replacements for the 944 though... make even cheaper models and you risk diluting an already diluted brand and doing that could have potentially serious ramifications.

They are however likely to resurrect the 928 according to this weeks Autocar though. ;)

I agree about the dilution factor - but I think a resurrected 944 would be a better car than the Boxster and the Cayman. They try too hard to be like the 911 yet different, whereas the 924/944 was a different animal altogether.

I have heard rumors about a new 928 - a very interesting idea but how will they avoid stealing 911 sales? Maybe they'll make it into a four-door?

Yep, the Scorpio was famed in it's day for being exactly that. ;)

The problem you've got is that you try finding a Capri or Escort (juries out on an early Escort I'm afraid, entertaining yes... anything else hmmmm) in comparative condition, that doesn't need a serious wedge spent on it to get it through it's MOT never mind approaching the performance of a Scorpio.... and the Scorpio DOES handle by the way.

What you get when your drop 700 notes on a Scorpio is a sorted 150mph car, that's entertaining, reasonably modern, gadget laden and most of all.... bullet proof. Sure the jury's out on the looks, I like them... and their boldness, doesn't mean it's not a good car though. ;)

I'm still struggling to think of a comparable car, for comparable money. ;)

I'm slightly biased on the Capri front as I purchased one as a track car a couple of years ago.

Cost: £750 for a perfect condition 2.8i

Give me the choice of that as a drivers car, or the Scorpio, and it'd take me all of zero seconds to choose :)

Your definition of drivers car must be different to mine, as the Scorpio doesn't even enter into the equation IMO
For £750 (or thereabouts) I reckon even an E30 BMW is within reach. This, even more so than the Capri, appears to fit all of your parameters.

OK.. so, it's 12:12 am CET here (11:12 pm GMT)...

Have I already missed it?
Ross is on, but no Clarkson...

Yeah he was on at about 10.45pm. Wasn't all that to be honest. Good perodua nippa whatever sketch though.

Wow, on the same show is Patrick Swayze and he is coming across as really really weird!!

brilliant show tonight, really enjoyed it.

the 'rrari is better with coupe/hardroof watsit though.
Agreed. I was in the coupé earlier this week and I think the convertible does look like it's poor cousin from a design point of view.

i think that was teh best episode in a long while. i would have a zonda any day out of those three, but it was the only true supercar there. them getting out of the car park was the funniest thing i have seen in a long while.

the focus was quite tasty, nicer than the vauxhall but i would prob have a golf gti instead if i had the choice!

Oh god, now even I'm watching Top Gear. And I'm a lady you know!

That was great... loved all the kerfuffle they caused in Paris coming out of that car park :D

I'd take the Megane Sport 225 over all of 'em if I was looking at a 200bhp FWD hatch. ;)

That said, I really hate the handling characteristics of these cars, from lift-off oversteer then the traction kicks back in and the cars just understeer... it's just so... messy.

Ford should grow a spine and revert back to their RWD layout, and leave the FWD sh*t to Vauxdull. hahahahahaha.

Preach on! FWD is good for shopping trolleys but for real fun you need RWD.
