Brilliant review.
Apple really under promised and over delivered this year.

Don't care about the ability to pull down notifications with one hand. I have an S8 + now and always use two hands. Agree completely the names suck. I don't have an iphone now but I believe you can change font size on alot of things (Safari) so everything doesn't have to be same, just bigger on the Max.

I buy a new iPhone every year and I haven’t seen a single year that improves the camera as much as the video review shows.
A fair review. I’ll take Apple’s ecosystem and reliability and customer service over a tad better camera any day.
Looks like the Pixel 2 gives a tad more detail zoomed in, otherwise the iPhone XS smashes it in dynamic range. Will be more interesting to see what Pixel 3 does.
Even if it’s way better android is a hot mess.

The "better camera" stuff is pure opinion at this point. There is no means to objectively insist the top tier smartphones take better pics over each other. They're all pretty good.
The Pixel 2 camera is superior to the Xs camera. There’s no doubting this. And the 3 will be even better. Have fun with your Max. Just keep it in the back of your mind that every photo you take with it could have been better with a Pixel.
I don't take their reviews seriously, always an anti Apple slant somehow. It's like they take non negatives and try to spin them into a negative somehow.
Tell me about it. My work/concession phone is an S8. The UI is clunky and performance hiccups everywhere. I love how their apps can change system-wide elements, but it's not worth the performance trade-off.

he raised issues with the camera that are significant compared to last year's pixels and the comparison shots showed this.
I think this must be a ML issue where Google has just better AI rather than hardware
Seems like a fair review with quite expected results - a small upgrade over the X, not enough for X owners to upgrade but a nice bonus for those of us buying the XS. I don't see any "anti-Apple" slant here at all but I haven't really watched Verges videos before.
I was interested in how the faster processors would affect FaceID and it looks to be a good second or more faster, which I would imagine people will appreciate over time as it feels more immediate. Combined with the technique shown in this video, XS FaceID would probably feel almost as if there was no lock at all.
The camera softening is a bit disappointing, but I would be still willing to put some of the things it does vs Pixel 2 as preference instead of being better or worse. Of the photos shown in the video I was probably going 50/50 between if I preferred the iPhone or the Pixel.

The camera improvements are bigger than I remember happening in a single year on iPhone. My biggest pet peeve of the iPhone X camera has been the blown out highlights. Smart HDR seems to fix that.
Yeah the Pixel 2 camera may get the edge, although it seemed somewhat subjective, but as an improvement to this camera this year Apple have really delivered. In my opinion anyway.
