Those side by side pics with the pixel 2 were eye opening, the pixel 2 took the better pictures by far. The camera sucks IMO on the X and I was hoping it would have been significantly improved this time around. Shame that Apple is falling behind, especially in something as crucial as the camera.

The Pixel 2 camera is superior to the Xs camera. There’s no doubting this. And the 3 will be even better. Have fun with your Max. Just keep it in the back of your mind that every photo you take with it could have been better with a Pixel.
I’m sure if people cared that much about the pixel their sales wouldn’t be so embarrassing

There’s a reason why people love iPhones and not pixels

Pixel may have a better camera but the average person would not tell the difference

well it's more interesting that Pixel is doing that on a year old single lens camera. This is all software it appears and somehow the Pixel is able to just nuke Apple.
This is a fairly shocking review camera wise the rest is as expected.

I don't like the hype around Pixel camera since the beginning. If you want to do REAL pictures, buy DSLR or even mirror-less camera, learn Photoshop and open new Instagram.

And if you still want to be mobile photographer - for me most of this pictures on the review weren't worse on iPhone - it's a preference and taste - and that everyone has different.

Pixel is not the best, it's different and that should be in the article.

Besides, who buys smartphone ONLY for camera? I don't care that Pixel might be better, it's overpriced Android phone that is ugly and I wouldn't be happy to use it.
He was focusing on the camera like it would be the most important future. I could agree if it was a massive difference, but it's clearly a preference and comments show this.

I don't think it's reasonable to make every consumer buy a DSLR and use photoshop. I understand my results will not be as good as a DSLR, but within those limitations I expect the absolute BEST from Apple. I'm not sure what pics you were looking at, but in the iPhone/pixel2 comparisons the pixel 2 pics looked a LOT better. You could see all the pores on the face in the pixel 2 for example, where on the iPhone you could clearly see the smoothing they did and it looked like something an amateur would do trying to smooth a picture on photoshop. Now I'm not saying the iPhones pictures are terrible or anything, I'm sure they are still top of the line. But they certainly aren't the best by any stretch of the imagination. It's not only Google that has surpassed them either, other oem's like Huawei have made significant strides.

I also think you downplay the importance of a camera on a smartphone, well I suppose this depends on the user and is pretty unique to every consumer. For myself I have 2 young kids and I want something that's always in my pocket, ready to take a picture at any second of the day with the caveat that the picture won't be quite as nice as a dedicated camera. I'll bet if you had a survey the camera would be very close to the top as a reason why consumers buy a smartphone, probably only beat by necessities such as calls/texting and maybe social media.

When did they show Safari?

You're correct it was Twitter. How do we have any guarantee apps won't just stay in this unoptimized state.

My friend has 3 kids. He bought 6S Plus cos it was £10/monthly less than 7 Plus which was up that year. 7 Plus actually has a better camera, but smaller bill is more important for dad of 3 kids. He still didn't gave up the iOS and stayed with Apple. He needs good camera, but not so good to pay to much. And also not so good to justify changing platform, right?

If the camera was so important, why consumers still chose iPhones which are "worse" according to The Verge and many other reviewers?

You have right, importance of features are unique to every consumer.
For me: I have 3 different cameras (older DSLR, mirror-less and action cam), 3 Macs and the eco-system is more important to me than camera in the phone. I will say more: I'm going with XS this year cos it's more comfortable to take pictures rather than 6S Plus.

There's no guarantee. Just like there was no guarantee apps would be updated to support iPhone X.

But given iPhone XS Max and XR share the exact same point resolution, developers will probably update to support the new size.

Don't care about the ability to pull down notifications with one hand. I have an S8 + now and always use two hands. Agree completely the names suck. I don't have an iphone now but I believe you can change font size on alot of things (Safari) so everything doesn't have to be same, just bigger on the Max.
Me either. I know alot of ppl on here complain if they cannot pull down notifications with one hand, or text with one hand etc. But i have never cared about that. Actually i have always used both hands with my phone. So it is no big deal to me to have to use the other hand for other stuff. But for some it is a deal breaker. lol.

Because other factors are important as well. For myself I'd certainly consider a Pixel 2 because of the better camera, but in the end I opt for an Apple device because of the atrocious way Google handles my privacy and because I find the iphone's screen setup/notch highly superior to the Pixel 2's. Like I said, I'm not saying the iPhone takes terrible pictures, although sometimes it definitely does in my experience. It takes good enough pictures where I'm willing to accept it because of the other things I feel like I'd be trading off with Android.

The screen is so bad on the pixel, the worst implementation of OLED to date, I don't know how anyone owning that phone can make out heads or tails on pic quality.
It might be far from the best example of an OLED screen, but it’s more than acceptable. But of course, people exaggerate on here more than anywhere else.

Yes but also we have to take into account that these big Max screens will provide a better/bigger gaming experience aswell as watching movies on it will look miles better then the smaller version.
I'm sure, but I'm not a gamer, so that is not must have feature

I’m a little confused. So everything is going to look bigger on the iPhone Max and will display the same amount of content as the XS on iOS? You don’t think Apple will release an update in the future to correct this?

It is kind of a let down to not get an extra row of apps or get more text on the screen on the Xs Max over the Xs....that may ultimately push me back to the Xs within 14 days....we will see.

correction: Mashable review shows safari showing more info on the Xs Max than the X. All is well lol

It doesn’t make any sense as to why Apple would do this. For the Plus models, they always had an extra row of apps and displayed more content no?

No that’s never been the case

Big or small the amount of rows has been no difference from Regular to plus phones

Apps will get updated to sort this issue like with the 7 to x

What has always felt bizarre about these technologies, is that "HDR" systems do exactly the opposite of what the name says – they reduce the dynamic range, so that more of the photo appears in the same gamut, and feels 'exposed' at the same level. More of the image 'feels' visible by dint of the higher and lower sections of the dynamic range being removed. They should be called "LDR".

I mean, it doesn't really matter, but it's just a funny aspect of cellphone camera nomenclature.

If you ask an Apple fan, the verge is google centric. If you ask an android fan, the verge is Apple centric. Almsot every time lol.

They don't seem have that kind of bias. To me their bias is just "futurism". Like, I love them, but they think things are cool that are so lame just because they're innovative technologically. So, like all tech publications, they make calls that things are going to be HUGE when they're just silly gimmicks.

Yeah that bums me out as one of the primary reasons I am going back to plus size is because my eyes aren't so good with small text anymore. Many apps do let you change the text size in settings though (the ones that support dynamic type), the News app is one example, although I don't know if this will actually reformat so more content is on screen.

Wow I could've sworn this was a thing in the earlier Plus models. Not sure why I thought this. Thanks for the info!

Yeah now I'm thinking I may not trade in my X right away to make sure I'm truly happy with the Xs Max. I definitely want a larger phone/screen, but I've gotten very used to the X and how easy it is to use one handed. Plus getting a monovision contact for reading has made a HUGE HUGE difference and as long as it's in I can see my X perfectly. Hmm, wouldn't be a bad thing to save $1500 by not getting an iPhone this year.
