The Pixel 2 camera is superior to the Xs camera. There’s no doubting this. And the 3 will be even better. Have fun with your Max. Just keep it in the back of your mind that every photo you take with it could have been better with a Pixel.

Yeah with crappy Android and a Google branded phone. Oh come on!
Pixel? Seriously. Why? YUCK!

Hands down one of the better reviews out there but I don't like how he already compared the camera to the Pixel 3 which isn't out yet.

Yeah I'll be sure to remember that next time I snap pics of grocery items when I'm comparing store to store.

The screen is so bad on the pixel, the worst implementation of OLED to date, I don't know how anyone owning that phone can make out heads or tails on pic quality.

I almost blew coffee out my nose reading this...you really like to rain on people's parade, don't you? Do you like to kick puppies and pull little girls' hair too?

You people are insane about phones on this forum, lol

Seemed pretty even-handed to me.

I don't fancy myself a master photographer and 99.99% of my photos will only be viewed on phones. I can definitely live without the best phone camera out there, especially if it's attached to a phone I don't want.

So basically the Max shows the same amount of content as the non-Max? Well that makes is a lot less appealing.
That's what he showed off. I think if you write apps, you can compile it to take advantage of the higher resolution but by default its just the same thing, just bigger

Yes but also we have to take into account that these big Max screens will provide a better/bigger gaming experience aswell as watching movies on it will look miles better then the smaller version.

The apps shown in the review haven't been optimized for Max. Things like Safari and Mail will show more.

That would still be a very limited and poor usage of the larger screen.

Compared to them adding more features to it , taking usage of the bigger UI , YES but still it's a much bigger screen and for any multimedia consumer it's going to make a big difference.

Yes, compared to taking full advantage of an expensive phone it would be very suboptimal, even if games, YouTube, and "multimedia" look bigger.

It's annoying that the base iOS experience doesn't seem to take advantage of the bigger screen, but hopefully apps will.

Yeah I’m sure he’s going to be thinking.....“gee I could have taken a slightly better picture holding an inferior phone to everything else.”

Safari in the review showed the exact same amount of content on the Max Vs non-Max.

This for me is enough to go with the smaller XS and return my Max reorder .

Good review, I like all the areas that have been improved and refined.

- Slightly better display
- Slightly better camera
- Slightly better battery life
- Faster wireless charging
- Incredible 7nm SoC
- Better modem with Band 71 support
- Faster FaceID
- 120Hz touch sensing
- Dual eSIM support
- Stronger glass
- Better stereo speaker
- Stereo recording
- IP68 dust and water resistance

Just an overall really perfect and refined phone. I have only 3 things that I wish Apple would change:

- $100 cheaper
- Include an 18W fast charger (although I suspect the reason they haven't done this as that would punish the battery harder leading to more complaints in the future)
- 120Hz display refresh rate

I really feel we are pretty much there with the absolute complete smartphone. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I was primed to buy it this year but I decided my 6S would last another year and I'd just buy more stocks instead.

Why are the Verge reviews given so much weight. I read it and thought it could have been one sentence: I am Nilay Patel and I prefer the Pixel camera. Someone else from the Verge tweeted out a couple photos saying it proved how much better the Pixel camera was yet most people that replied to it said the XS was better. I can’t take a review seriously that lists the iPhone camera as a “con”.

Weird, because the review I saw mentioned all kinds of things that the Xs does better than the X, he really liked the screen, and despite liking the Pixel's camera better, he said that was subjective.

The HDR and handling of bright highlights, etc. in the camera looks good. However, the big disappointment for me is that the camera continues to have poor edge recognition in portrait mode. In the video he shows how portrait mode simply erased part of the subject's glasses.

These are the same problems that existed two years ago when it was introduced with my iPhone 7 Plus. I figured they'd have a handle on them now, but no such luck.

BTW, on the weekend I tried portrait mode on the X. Same problem. In fact, the very first shot I made with the X in portrait mode that day had big problems with edge-finding.

I don't like the hype around Pixel camera since the beginning. If you want to do REAL pictures, buy DSLR or even mirror-less camera, learn Photoshop and open new Instagram.

And if you still want to be mobile photographer - for me most of this pictures on the review weren't worse on iPhone - it's a preference and taste - and that everyone has different.

Pixel is not the best, it's different and that should be in the article.

Besides, who buys smartphone ONLY for camera? I don't care that Pixel might be better, it's overpriced Android phone that is ugly and I wouldn't be happy to use it.
He was focusing on the camera like it would be the most important future. I could agree if it was a massive difference, but it's clearly a preference and comments show this.

Why are the Verge reviews given so much weight.

Because they have a *massive* fan base following for products and other sources. Not everybody likes them, but they are also the biggest cynic out there, which can be a good thing and a bad thing.
