You're correct it was Twitter. How do we have any guarantee apps won't just stay in this unoptimized state.

If it’s a major app from a major developer, it will be updated within release week. If it’s a niche app from a developer whose job isn’t updating that specific app, it may not get updated. I still have some apps on my phone that aren’t optimized for Plus phones. It looks ugly but it’s not the end of the world.

What has always felt bizarre about these technologies, is that "HDR" systems do exactly the opposite of what the name says – they reduce the dynamic range, so that more of the photo appears in the same gamut, and feels 'exposed' at the same level. More of the image 'feels' visible by dint of the higher and lower sections of the dynamic range being removed. They should be called "LDR".

I mean, it doesn't really matter, but it's just a funny aspect of cellphone camera nomenclature.
Until 10,000 nit screens become commonplace this is the compromise.

Well it's not a compromise. It's just bad doublespeak marketing jargon.

And it's also an astonishingly ugly thing that you should never ever use when taking pictures.

Those side by side pics with the pixel 2 were eye opening, the pixel 2 took the better pictures by far. The camera sucks IMO on the X and I was hoping it would have been significantly improved this time around. Shame that Apple is falling behind, especially in something as crucial as the camera.
That’s totally subjective.

It doesn’t make any sense as to why Apple would do this. For the Plus models, they always had an extra row of apps and displayed more content no?

Yeah now I'm thinking I may not trade in my X right away to make sure I'm truly happy with the Xs Max. I definitely want a larger phone/screen, but I've gotten very used to the X and how easy it is to use one handed. Plus getting a monovision contact for reading has made a HUGE HUGE difference and as long as it's in I can see my X perfectly. Hmm, wouldn't be a bad thing to save $1500 by not getting an iPhone this year.

It’s app specific. My comment was premature and was based on Twitter. Mashable shows the advantages of the Xs Max on safari.

Pixel 2 still better camera.....Ouch...Maybe next year apple....
This reminds me of Apple Music vs. Spotify. The Pixel camera has better algorithms, the best in the industry, and Google bought the company that developed them. Apple essentially has to try to invent their own equally good image processing agorithms, but from scratch. So far they’ve missed the mark while being “close enough” for most people.

Likewise, Spotify bought a company that developed an algorithm to determine music you’ll enjoy based on songs you’ve liked or listened to frequently. Apple has tried to catch up to Spotify’s automatically generated “Discover Weekly” and “Release Radar” playlists, but so far has failed to reproduce the magic. Still, for most people Apple’s attempts are “enough.”

Other similar dichotomies: Apple Photos vs. Google Photos. Apple Maps vs Google Maps. Siri vs Google Assistant.

They don't seem have that kind of bias. To me their bias is just "futurism". Like, I love them, but they think things are cool that are so lame just because they're innovative technologically. So, like all tech publications, they make calls that things are going to be HUGE when they're just silly gimmicks.
Yes. The Verge is always looking for “what’s next.” I don’t think they have a Google or Apple bias, but they’re a bit out of touch with average consumers.

(Most) tech blogs are for techies.

The Max was an easy choice for me this year, not necessarily because I think this is the best iPhone of all of them because of the ‘big screen’ or the ‘price point’, but I really do want the dual camera more than anything, and I find that to be a really nice tool have when you least expect it.

I’ve also gotten into the habit of using the 2x optical zoom quite frequently when taking photos. So much so that when I was using an older 6s for a brief period it threw me off when I kept looking for the quick 2x to tap.

Heh? Aren’t the cameras on the Xs and Xs max exactly the same this year?

Tell me about it. My work/concession phone is an S8. The UI is clunky and performance hiccups everywhere. I love how their apps can change system-wide elements, but it's not worth the performance trade-off.

lol im glad people know this
android UI is still far inferior with all those fancy features they have
its not really google fault though, its just they have to cater to different phone sizes and different manufacturers

In comparison to a model that *doesn’t* have the dual camera, such as the XR, that wouldn’t be an option for me strictly because of the dual camera capabilities.

I think (guessing really) that he was comparing the XS Max to the XR (the two options with larger screens).

I see, my bad, didn’t get that context. Moving along now!
Looking forward to my first dual camera iPhone!

The HDR and handling of bright highlights, etc. in the camera looks good. However, the big disappointment for me is that the camera continues to have poor edge recognition in portrait mode. In the video he shows how portrait mode simply erased part of the subject's glasses.

These are the same problems that existed two years ago when it was introduced with my iPhone 7 Plus. I figured they'd have a handle on them now, but no such luck.

BTW, on the weekend I tried portrait mode on the X. Same problem. In fact, the very first shot I made with the X in portrait mode that day had big problems with edge-finding.
I wonder how well the xr will handle the blur since it doesn't have that second camera its just all software doing it like the pixel. I dont think the XS and XSM are like this?

Maybe so, but IMO the difference is pretty clear, especially in this shot. Just look at the detail on the pixel side, you can see all the pores for example, where on the iPhone that level of detail is greatly smoothed over.
Look at the nose tip, the chin, the cheeks. Even the shadows seem more defined. The colors on the pixel also seem much more accurate to me.

I did have to downsize it because of Macrumors wimpy size allotment, and of course it's a screen grab off a youtube video. But even with that I can see a clear difference.

VERY good news, do you have a link?

I prefer the images from the iPhone. True they are a little too processed so that detail is lost, but I prefer the colour balance. The Pixel images look more clinical.

Interesting, not what I had hoped for which would have been some kind of automatic format of any webpage as they specifically only mention National Geographic. I know next to nothing about web development so have no idea how this will work with other websites. I guess I'll find out in a few days.

It’s basically up to the developers of each website to optimize their mobile site to take advantage of the additional screen on the Max.
