So today the 10th gen vanilla iPad was revealed, killing the headphone jack once and for all in the iPad lineup (which still makes no sense) but also FINALLY bringing USB-C to the vanilla iPad! 🥳

Additionally, the vanilla iPad finally gets a Magic Keyboard of it's own, and it no longer has the home button. It's glorious...well it would be if it wasn't for two factors: Price, AND IT'S STILL USING THE 1ST GEN APPLE PENCIL

$449 for 64 gbs. The 9th Gen iPad is 256 gb for only $20 more. Or hell the Galaxy S6 Lite gets you 128gb for $329, AND THAT COMES WITH A STYLUS.

But hey, it has it's own Magic Keyboard now...for $250. So to that, I'd like to do a little comparison. A 10th Gen iPad with 256 gb and a Magic Keyboard, is $850.

Well that's fine and dandy...but there's another thing that is the same price as that with better specs: The M1 Macbook Air

For the price of a 256 gb vanilla iPad and the keyboard, you can just get a much better Macbook Air, and not just refurbished, as Amazon is selling brand new M1 Macbook Airs for $800 now. I've said this regarding the M1 iPad Air/Pro that you're better off just getting an M1 Macbook Air instead of this, and now this also applies with the vanilla iPad.

Hell I can't even recommend the 9th gen iPad anymore, as the Galaxy S6 Lite is the same price as it and it has more storage than base spec iPad at the same price, and it comes with a stylus, as well as having a desktop mode with DeX mode. Not to mention not being bogged down by iPadOS and having features it doesn't, like being able to install software without an app store, AND ACTUALLY HAVING MULTIPLE USER ACCOUNTS ON THE SAME DEVICE WHY DO WE NOT HAVE THIS C'MON.

So with today's update, there's no reason at all to buy an iPad anymore. The S6 Lite is just a better tablet on the value proposition and featureset, and if you need to go higher just get a Macbook. And I'm not alone in this sentiment as the Mac has been outselling the iPad lineup for two years now since the Apple Silicon transition happened.

God...this makes me sad as the iPad used to be my favorite Apple thing since the iPad 2. Now, the Mac's my new fave, as my Macbook Pro has pretty much taken over all of my iPad's previous functions. Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave at what his most important creation has become.

There still remains the fundamental differences between a tablet - the iPad - and a laptop - the Mac. So, if you want a tablet form factor, there is still a reason. I do, so your argument doesn't win me over.

if you need a tablet, just get a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite at this point. The iPad lineup has become an expensive redundant mess at this point that's trying so hard to be a laptop replacement, plus the fundamental issues of iPadOS (Like the fact we still don't have multiple user account support while the Galaxy Tabs do) and you'd get more value out of the S6 Lite for the same price as the 9th gen iPad.

While that example would be a generally bad buy. I doubt most iPad buyers will buy the keyboard or max spec model. Most are just buying the base model. Then getting some cheap keyboard case off Amazon. If they even get a keyboard. Still for people without much money. $329 to $449 is a huge jump. It's a totally different customer type than people who buy a Pro model, who are less dollar sensitive.

No, I don't want an Android tablet - I've had 7 so I'm familiar with them. I have the M1 12.9 and a Mini 6 and like them a lot more than I did with any of my Android tablets (last one was Galaxy Tab S7+).

Android tablets don’t run iPadOS which is the whole point of me having a tablet. So no.

iPads have use cases (many commercial) that don’t suit laptops - point of sale, taking orders in a store, operating iOS apps that are not available on MacOS (many corporate and job apps), connecting to cell, etc. So IPads are useful - just not as laptop replacements for most users

The support for Android over many years on old hardware is slim. Besides anything else, that's a great reason to buy an iPad, you know it'll be updated for 5 years and work for another 3-5 years after that.

Personally I don't understand this new iPad. I really don't understand taking away the headphone jack. My biggest use for my iPad is because iPhones don't have headphone jacks anymore and Apple doesn't sell any sort of music player.

But what improvement does this have over the 10.2" iPad? Slightly faster and colors. I love the colors but not for $100 more.

Nowadays iPadOS is more a negative selling point depending on who you ask. No desktop mode and no multiuser accounts as well as not being able to install whatever you wanted.

The new S8 and S6 Lite are using Android 12 so they'll get longterm OS updates as well

Good luck convincing the vast majority of iPad owners to switch to an Android tablet.

The fundamental issues you mentions are likely not deal breakers for most iPad users or they wouldn't still be using iPads.

I was the one being asked and I disagree, I clearly like iPadOS. Again, I don’t care what version of android it’s running, I’m looking for iPadOS which you need an iPad for.

Except Android doesn't really have the great mobile software iOS does. You can't get apps like Procreate on Android. Sure there are art apps, but they're not nearly as good.

If you use it as a travel device and just for reading stuff and maybe watch the news during commuting, it’s great. It’s close to the 11” iPad Air / Pro and 64 gb should be enough for that light use case.

Rather get an old Ipad pro over an android tablet.

Neither of those are a good deal. The 9th gen iPad was the best deal, but at this point the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a better offer than it, unless you really hate Android for some reason. M1 Macbook Airs are cheaper than the 11 Pro.

So what? Maybe somebody already has a Mac and / or a PC and an iPad brings much more to the table than a M1 Air.

There's no room for the headphone jack on the iPho......

Oh, this is the iPad..

Hmm
🤣

(totally absurd to not have a headphone jack on all iPads, but particularly down on the base models, where wired usage is I'm sure very common, especially with kids)
