Recommending Android Tablets? Stop trying to make Android Tablets happen, they have been dead for a long time, unless you like running blown up Android apps.

Besides iPad and maybe Windows tablets, Android tablets are pointless as there are hardly any optimized tablet apps compared to the iPad and maybe Windows UWP apps.

That said, the new regular iPad is a bad value when for a little bit more, you can get an iPad Air with more features or buy a used iPad Pro M1 or 2018/2020 model.

...do you not know about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and S8? They've been reviewing overwhelmingly positively, including among Apple users.

Oh, you're talking about the students using iPads. I thought you were talking about teachers teaching with iPads. However, I still fail to see the issue. The dongle just attaches to the end of the headphones, so just treat it as one unit. Or simply buy USB-C headphones (example) so you don't want to use a dongle.

The phrase "complaining for the sake of complaining" comes to mind here.

Why can't the iPad have a headphone jack? there's plenty of space for one, it's not water resistant, and it's treated as a laptop replacement, which guess what laptops have: A headphone jack.

So why can't it have one?

My 12 year old is required to have headphones for certain classroom activities. I assume it prevents hearing the cacophony of a dozen+ iPads in the room, and I assume it’s because not all students have Bluetooth/airpod headphones. Kids have a hard enough time managing their iPads and headphones/earbuds, let alone add a small lightning/usb-c to the mix, or the adding the expectation of expecting kids to come with charged AirPods/Bluetooth buds.

Once again:
How, and how many, does it does it help by excluding it, and does it hurt a large group?
How, and how many, does it help by including it, and does that then hurt a large group?

It’s pretty easy to see how deleting a feature causes some negative trade-offs.

How bad were the trade-offs, and for who, when keeping the jack?
They use iPads and not Chromebooks in school? Really?
I don't use Bluetooth at all. I use wired headphones because the FM app in my Nokia requires it as the antenna.
Apple doesn't know about a real FM chip and even GPS is extra in the iPad. Requires cellular. It may not use cellular. I don't know for sure. But the WiFi versions don't have GPS.
Some Android devices have killed the headphone jack.
To me it is stupid, just like using microSD versus standard SD.
Another thing Apple doesn't get.
I will never understand 64 and 256 in storage without the option for 128.

I'm not on Apple's design team, so I have no idea what they're design decisions entail and what their future plans are with the direction they're going. I do know, however, that you can absolutely still use wired headphones with an iPad either buy simply buying a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle or buying USB-C headphones. So, why can't you do that? 🤔

Aside from how inconvenient that is compared to just having a god damn jack when there's no god damn reason the jack should've been cut?

Did you tell Macbook Pro owners who wanted HDMI and SDXC back to "why don't you just use a dongle?"

if you need a tablet, just get a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite at this point.
An Android tablet does not fit so easily and slickly into the eco system of someone using Apple products.
I use my iPad for office type apps as well apps for specific solutions that aren’t available on my MacBook Pro.
In addition the form factor and 5G connectivity work better for me on the go rather than a clam shell type device.

It is obviously a personal choice.
For some the iPad will fit, for others the MacBook Air for others and Android tablet.

The fact that you're swearing about this just shows how ridiculously emotional you are getting about such a simple "issue". I also find it ironic how someone still wanting to use wired headphones with an iPad is complaining about inconvenience (to me, wires are not convenient). But in any case, how on earth is it "inconvenient" to simply attach a tiny dongle to the end of your existing headphones or simply buy dedicated USB-C headphones?

And, yes, I use multiple dongles with both my iPhone and MacBook Air. It's no big deal as long as they work, which they do. Again, "complaining for the sake of complaining."

The phrase "complaining for the sake of complaining" comes to mind here.

The phrase “what’s good for me should be good for others” comes to mind here.

The dongle is a small non-permanent detachable thing. Enjoy trying to ensure those aren’t lost by 15+ young students fiddling with their equipment in class or at home, I dare you. We live stuff like that in my house. Do you?

Not at all, because I use Bluetooth headphones. I'm not saying you should use wireless headphones. You have the option to use wired headphones! Stop complaining!

I work with about 30-40 7-8 year olds each week. If the dongle is an issue for you, then simply buy USB-C headphones. Not sure what else to tell you. "You can lead a horse to water . . . "

When I think about the pricing of the iPad, I think about the first generation iPad that I paid $499 for. It was the only option and was a fantastic device that I used until I got the dreaded 3rd generation retina iPad that I also paid $499 for, then that was replaced by the iPad Air and you know what? it was $499. Apple has iPads that start at $329 now that are fantastic devices with other pricing options and features to fit most budgets. I would never need the features of the iPad Pro, what I do does not require that much power and I don't want to spend $799 for a YouTube/reader/note taking device. I do think they could slim the product line down a bit but at least they have good pricing options. Keep in mind, Apple has never been the value brand and they never will be. I remember paying $1499 for the indigo clamshell iBook G3 and that was the lowest priced Apple portable they sold at the time.

Not talking about me, talking about the wallets of parents of students.

The schools buy the ipad but do not want to buy and re-buy headphones & dongles.

Re-read what I mentioned about “what’s good for me should be good for you.”

:)

Then I guess they won't be placing orders for brand new iPads and will continue to use the models with headphone jacks if they truly can't budget for this at this time. If they don't have iPads already, then they need to figure in the total cost including headphones/dongles just like they would with any purchasing decision.

Again, “what’s good for me should be good for you” does not apply here because parents/schools have multiple options. However, "complaining for the sake of complaining" definitely fits what's going on here.

Removing a headphone jack is a way to force people into buying AirPods, nothing else.

I like this analysis of why it's happening:

Once the base iPads go to non-headphone jacks, and if schools want to use iPads and want/prefer/require headphone use ideally using simple headphones with 1/8” jacks that are ubiquitous and easy to get & replace, what other options are there?

I’m beating the drum for functional negatives due to removing the jack.

What are the functional negatives to keeping it? Besides someone who might complain for the sake of complaining. :)

My guess on the OG pencil is that they can't fit the charging stuff and the landscape camera in the same place. Which probably explains why the Pro didn't adopt that camera design either. Which is a crying shame. If the pencil worked with a normal QI charger or magsafe then you wouldn't care about it having a built in charger I guess. Or just get on with it and put USB-C on the end instead.

I just put my pencil on my mophie magsafe charger and it sticks on but doesn't charge.. Maybe that's how they solve that issue, drop the charging on the top, just magnetically attach and allow it to charge like the AirPods Pro 2, on anything, watch charger, magsafe, QI.

The KOSS Utility headphones have a very short cable with a proprietary 2.5 jack.
It comes in a 2.5 to 3.5 cable (male plug on each end).
You can purchase a replacement cable with either Lightning or USB-C plug.

The only positive thing about the 2022 iPad is USB-C port.

EDIT: Wait a min - it has landscape front-facing camera orientation? Hmmm.. sounds good!

But that price. *groans*

USB-C headphones are also easy to get/replace, so that argument doesn't hold water. And why does a school have to buy new iPads if they already have them? They can continue to use their existing ones for at least a few years for sure.

Again, I'm not on Apple's design team nor privy to their development timeline, so you'll have to ask someone at Apple who knows if you want all the details of why they make this or any other design choice. I can guarantee you, however, there's a logical reason (probably multiple) and it's not "hey, let's make some people angry just for the heck of it."

You literally have two very simple options (dongle or USB-C headphones) to continue to use wired headphones with all the newest generation iPads.

So today the 10th gen vanilla iPad was revealed, killing the headphone jack once and for all in the iPad lineup (which still makes no sense) but also FINALLY bringing USB-C to the vanilla iPad! 🥳

Additionally, the vanilla iPad finally gets a Magic Keyboard of it's own, and it no longer has the home button. It's glorious...well it would be if it wasn't for two factors: Price, AND IT'S STILL USING THE 1ST GEN APPLE PENCIL

$449 for 64 gbs. The 9th Gen iPad is 256 gb for only $20 more. Or hell the Galaxy S6 Lite gets you 128gb for $329, AND THAT COMES WITH A STYLUS.

But hey, it has it's own Magic Keyboard now...for $250. So to that, I'd like to do a little comparison. A 10th Gen iPad with 256 gb and a Magic Keyboard, is $850.

Well that's fine and dandy...but there's another thing that is the same price as that with better specs: The M1 Macbook Air

View attachment 2097165

For the price of a 256 gb vanilla iPad and the keyboard, you can just get a much better Macbook Air, and not just refurbished, as Amazon is selling brand new M1 Macbook Airs for $800 now. I've said this regarding the M1 iPad Air/Pro that you're better off just getting an M1 Macbook Air instead of this, and now this also applies with the vanilla iPad.

Hell I can't even recommend the 9th gen iPad anymore, as the Galaxy S6 Lite is the same price as it and it has more storage than base spec iPad at the same price, and it comes with a stylus, as well as having a desktop mode with DeX mode. Not to mention not being bogged down by iPadOS and having features it doesn't, like being able to install software without an app store, AND ACTUALLY HAVING MULTIPLE USER ACCOUNTS ON THE SAME DEVICE WHY DO WE NOT HAVE THIS C'MON.

So with today's update, there's no reason at all to buy an iPad anymore. The S6 Lite is just a better tablet on the value proposition and featureset, and if you need to go higher just get a Macbook. And I'm not alone in this sentiment as the Mac has been outselling the iPad lineup for two years now since the Apple Silicon transition happened.

God...this makes me sad as the iPad used to be my favorite Apple thing since the iPad 2. Now, the Mac's my new fave, as my Macbook Pro has pretty much taken over all of my iPad's previous functions. Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave at what his most important creation has become.
I don’t agree. I love my iPad and use it daily.
