USB-C headphones are also easy to get/replace, so that argument doesn't hold water. And why does a school have to buy new iPads if they already have them? They can continue to use their existing ones for at least a few years for sure.

Again, I'm not on Apple's design team nor privy to their development timeline, so you'll have to ask someone at Apple who knows if you want all the details of why they make this or any other design choice. I can guarantee you, however, there's a logical reason (probably multiple) and it's not "hey, let's make some people angry just for the heck of it."

You literally have two very simple options (dongle or USB-C headphones) to continue to use wired headphones with all the newest generation iPads.
Yes, that’s true if other families/students agree to follow what you think.

Seems like a pretty powerful device with a great screen for a minimal price. I have an iPad and a MacBook. I use them for different things. If someone just wants an iPad I think this new one would be a great option.

The problem is that the new one is a worse buy than something like the prior version 11" iPad Pro, especially if you can get a discount, refurb, etc

"that" meaning what, exactly? You quoted my entire post, so I'm not sure what you're referencing specifically.

That schools will easily and happily jump over to buying new usb-c headphones or dongles when they replace iPads, where those headphones will most certainly not be as cheap as the ubiquitous 1/8” headphones were and are.

That parents will be good with buying new usb-c headphones when their son or daughter loses or breaks their school-provided headphone, instead of giving them one of the six 1/8” headphones they’ve have lying around the house for a decade, or available at the dollar store for $3.

Etc. etc.

Never mind, you’re right I agree with you now. :) We’re done and can move on.

I was completely underwhelmed byy todays offering and I don't know why anyone would buy the new ipad over the reduced price of the ipad 9.
Bigger screen, newer processor, dual landscape speakers, landscape camera, better cameras, 5G, USB-C, Magic Keyboard support, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2?

iPad 9 is still a good value and would work for many people, but this is a pretty big single generation upgrade.

Apple doesn't carry USB-C headphones (just 3.5mm and lightning ones), but on Amazon I'm seeing USB-C headphones for just over $10, which is about half what Apple charges for their 3.5mm or Lightning wired headphones. And I'm sure schools would get volume discounts. If the school is doing their due diligence, they already have future plans in place and will budget based on those. It's really no big deal. Not sure why you're making it one. Technology moves on, as always.

Great opportunity to teach your child how to be responsible and introduce consequences for losing things (just like you would even for the dollar store headphones). Also a great opportunity to go reevaluate your budget if buying a $10-12 pair of headphones is going to break the bank.

Never mind, you’re right I agree with you now. :) We’re done and can move on.

Dripping sarcasm duly noted, and no one's forcing you to continue to reply. Move on if you wish. I'm good.

The Magic Keyboard prices have always been outrageous to the point I would say nobody reasonable would buy one unless they simply have too much money. $250 for the BASELINE iPad which is $450 by itself, is ludicrous. This iPad sucks. There's no reason anyone should ever buy this iPad at this price.

lol whats big about any of that to someone wanting a basic iPad? if you want 5G and a fancy keyboard accessory you can get an air. The entire point of this iPad is to be MORE AFFORDABLE. They basically just made an extra crappy version of the Air with a slight discount.

The cheaper v9 is still available. But there’s value to this one. You save $150 over the air, and the only differences are processor, laminated screen, and pencil 1 vs 2.

Hm gee ok we’ll start trying to teach that. We never broached the subject yet. Ever. I’m sure he’ll respond and follow 100% overnight.

Sounds like $10-12 is nothing to you, and the time it takes having to respond asap sometimes when needed the next day. What’s your Venmo or PayPal, to put your money where you mouth is, I’d be good with you covering those expenses when they arise. Or running to the store and dropping a replacement off at our front door when needed the next day.

Anyway, the point is, unless there was a compelling reason to remove a headphone port on the base ipad, where a good argument could be made that the pros of no-port outweigh the negatives, it seems kind of short sighted. Maybe it’ll re-appear one day, just like certain caveman-old-school ports reappeared on the MacBook Pros.

As someone who multi-track records music via ipad and can’t use Bluetooth for that, I love having a separate headphone jack and charging port, and being able to use my many headphones & charging cables around the house w/o lugging around a dongle. Oh well I must be the only one to find more value with a jack than removing it.

So you will have to decide whether you will need a taller screen [iPhone] or a wider screen [iPad] and once you have decided, you will need to go through the hardware [and software?] differences before getting one...

I was thinking now that we have the 10th gen the 9th gen will cost less but no... And because of inflation, instead of prices going down, it will go up for countries other than the USA...

Neither of those are a good deal. The 9th gen iPad was the best deal, but at this point the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a better offer than it, unless you really hate Android for some reason. M1 Macbook Airs are cheaper than the 11 Pro.
Android really blows, it scores almost as high as microsoft on the crap o meter and that is being nice. Actually android and microsoft peg the crap o meter at its highest level.

Spain, Europe
This iPad is a nonsense.

A new 2022 iPad, using the Apple Pencil first gen from the past decade. Which cannot be charged unless you use a clunky dongle/adapter. And the price, which is a bit expensive on the US? But it is almost 600€ here in Europe. In the meantime, they have raised prices of the Air, from 680€ to 770€. Outrageous.

The iPad Pro used to start from 879€. Now it starts from 1050€

As much as I can understand your disappointment, suggesting to stop buying iPads and go with a S6 lite instead in an forum full of Apple fanboys (or at least Apple lovers...) is looking for troubles...
Having said that, from someone that is not in the Apple ecosystem (but has a lot of Apple devices) and uses both iPads and Android tablets, let me tell you, they are very different beasts. The S6 lite makes sense if you want to draw at the cheapest price possible and watch videos (cheaper than even the 9th gen, better speakers, pen included). My sister bought one for her 14 year old daughter for €280 and she is happy. But she bought an 11in iPad pro with M1 and pencil 2 for herself... While the 2022 version of the S6 lite has a better processor the the older S6 lite (yeah, Samsung is so dumb they didn't even change the name...) it's not even close to the even the A13. Also higher end Samsung tablets had ditched the audio jack too, which is a shame.
I bought the S8 ultra and while it has some great aspects (especially the size) I don't use nearly as much as any of my iPad pros, to the point I almost regret purchasing it (for many reasons I explained elsewhere in these forums, but mainly because, other than for streaming I can hardly find anything where it's better than the iPad pro for someone like me that does not want to replace a Mac or Windows device).

for that I would just get the ipad air - the cost difference in them is not much

Non laminated = "not a great screen"
(especially with how it's now priced)

This thing is now a borderline ripoff
I agree that a laminated screen usually doesn’t look as good. That said, repairability is much better with a non-laminated screen.

It's scary that you act like teaching kids responsibility is some foreign, ridiculous concept. No wonder out society is in trouble! If you can't afford $10-12 in a pinch, what would you do if a true emergency came up like your car battery died? I'm sure your kid could survive with the built in speakers temporarily until you could start a go fund me for the headphones. That's what people do these days, right? Ask strangers to pay for things for them, just like you did in your post?
