Nowadays iPadOS is more a negative selling point depending on who you ask. No desktop mode and no multiuser accounts as well as not being able to install whatever you wanted.

The new S8 and S6 Lite are using Android 12 so they'll get longterm OS updates as well

This has to just be trolling at this point. 'Nowadays iPadOS is not sufficient; try Android". Whaaaat?

I vote we kill off the tablet segment in general. Android tablets are dead and even with Google’s new release they realize few people will pay a premium for an Android slab. Apple has the market cornered so if schools and artists want to use them then cool, make like two iPads. Honestly though I’ve never seen anything great be drawn on an iPad, it’s effectively a sketchbook then created on something more appropriate. People using tablets as media devices can usually get away with using their phone or laptop so that answers that. Tablets just suck honestly and are usually a 3rd device for most people. As a tech community I wish we could all agree to not buy certain products to prove a point and give this new iPad the middle finger. Apple is literally laughing at us with this device that is essentially stuck inside its own ecosystem.

I quite disagree in that I like using a tablet for different purposes just as I like my phone, laptop, and desktop for different purposes. I want to keep the tablet form factor.

Sorry, but for me the iPad is a secondary device after my iPhone. Been living in the post-PC era for a while now. :)

iPads have use cases (many commercial) that don’t suit laptops - point of sale, taking orders in a store, operating iOS apps that are not available on MacOS (many corporate and job apps), connecting to cell, etc. So IPads are useful - just not as laptop replacements for most users
Reading books in bed. But I already have a an iPad mini.

It depends.
For many people who will need a laptop first, sure, the iPad is basically a tertiary device after a laptop/computer and a phone, so it's lower priority.
However, many people do start their computing from a smartphone nowadays. That's the iPhone. These people will be more likely attracted to the iPad that has faimiliar touch interface and "simpler" use than a traditional laptop/computer.

The good thing is for the first group, thanks to Apple Silicon, they don't have to sacfirifce efficiency in getting a laptop. But at the same time, I see the trend going to the second part of the group. I have met people in the workforce who consider a laptop as their tertiary device (usually just for the office/work). The rest, they do their stuff on their phone and iPad. And Apple is happy, as iPads probably give more margins to Apple through the additional accessories like the Apple pencil and the magic keyboard.

I think it is nowadays tablets are becoming more and more useless.

I think when Apple ditches Intel software updates, they will base macOS off of iPadOS, and turn iPadOS into macOS, and force all iPad apps to run on Macs.

That would also end the iPad era as well.

This tablet primarily exists for education, honestly. That’s one reason the display isn’t laminated - it’s easier to repair, and costs less to do so.

The 10.2 is sticking around for the groups fixed on that price point, plus that thing uses all old hardware so production cost is just that, no R&D to amortize.

I’m glad they added color in. I’m confused why they chose to reuse the 2012 iPod lineup of colors, but it’s something I guess.
Have you worked in the education field? Money/budget are one of the top priorities and with this being more expensive while the iPad 9th Gen still exists there’s little reason to refresh school iPads with this one as it affords no benefit.

Many of these are bought with grant money, and Apple has been known to offer different pricing + bundle packs to education.

Issues usually arise when someone on the school board hires a 'consultant'.

I was on the verge of selling an iPad Air Gen 4, but I realised I kindve like having it for this reason - as a secondary iOS device while my phone is on charge. Primarily cruising around the house, it’s nice to be able to put my phone on charge and keep cruising about the house with the iPad for music, watching videos, or controlling things about the house.

Let’s be real, if you’re going to a school that provides iPads then you’re probably in a certain demographic or social class. People that assume iPads are in every classroom are highly misinformed.

For me, personally, Cook’s Apple complicates the company’s products. There’re too many choices. I prefer Jobs’s Apple - Pro and Consumer.

Plus, Apple as a whole has neglected software for more hardware to sell. I don’t blame the software engineers - I think they are spread too thin (despite Apple having enough cash to pay more and acquire more developers).

Unfortunately, I just don’t see any great competition from other competitors - Samsung or Google. I really want to ditch the iPhone and iPad for a foldable - but that would break a lot of my current configurations and overall lifestyle.
Apple strategy is to have an iPad at every price tier
  • iPad 9 (2021) - $329
  • iPad 10 (2022) - $449
  • iPad Mini 6 (2021) - $499
  • iPad Air 5 (2021) - $599
  • M2 iPad Pro 11 (2022) - $799
  • M2 iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) - $1099

Check out Procreate instagram page to see the art others have created on the iPad

And that's just Procreate.

Some have made careers out of that app and iPad.

Personally I don't understand this new iPad. I really don't understand taking away the headphone jack. My biggest use for my iPad is because iPhones don't have headphone jacks anymore and Apple doesn't sell any sort of music player.

But what improvement does this have over the 10.2" iPad? Slightly faster and colors. I love the colors but not for $100 more.
I agree this new iPad lineup seems like an expensive mess, with hobbled support for a 1st gen Apple Pencil. I also agree that there is ZERO reason for me to update my 2020 iPP 11”. Apple could have had my money if they gave it mini-LED.

That said, my iPP 11” with Magic Keyboard + 2nd gen Pencil is still what I reach for more than my Macbook or MBP 16” whenever I’m going out for the day or doing any light task. MBP 16” use time is creeping up but I love the versatility of being able to watch a movie in bed, use the pencil to annotate a document, and then snap the iPad back into keyboard to write something, all on the same device.

Apple just needs to innovate much more on the top end of these machines than it has been to keep us buying them.

I was a little shocked and disappointed with the new pricing. I am usually the one who keeps the grandkids in iPads, and the price jump is pretty large when you multiply it times quite a few.

But Android as a replacement? Lol - no thanks.
You still going to be keeping the kids in iPads after just being instructed by your daughter to sell all the ones you recently purchased? Did she feel the kids were spending too much time on the devices?

I've tested many Android tablets over the years and all the iPads from 2017 onwards.

There are un-optimised apps on Android and on iPadOS? FB, Instagram, Twitter just to name a few. FYI, you have the choice to not blow up un-optimised apps to full-screen on Android.

Someone mentioned the user experience is bad. To use apps, you just tap the icon and use it. Yeah, I'm simplifying things here. But the main this is I've never felt I was held back by Android OS or the UI companies put on top of Android.

Samsung eco-system is pretty good. Huawei has built their eco-system really fast in the last 2 years. Xiaomi needs a lot more work.

The thing with Android is there's limitless tablets options and you can choose based on price, design or features.

As an artist and graphic designer, the main reason to get iPad is the graphic design apps are just much better. E.g. Affinity Designer, Adobe Illustrator, Vectornator, Amandine.

iPad has video editing apps, cool. I edit many videos and I won't want to edit videos on iPads due to productivity concerns. But hey, if you edit videos on iPads and it works for you, great.

I've tested so many tablets that I don't really care what I use as long as I can get my job done. And I find it very difficult to do graphic design on Android tablets which is my main gripe about Android OS.

For me, iOS GarageBand is a reason to own an iPad on its own. Which makes it all the more ludicrous the 9th gen is the only one left with a headphone jack (and a significant reason why I bought it over the more expensive, otherwise more highly specified models).

I’m so happy I bought an iPad Pro 11” M1 last year. The new iPad M2 doesn’t have any real useful improvements, and at least here in Japan [and all the other none USA countries], the price has shot up dramatically. iPad OS is still holding it back and I’m waiting for that true external display support and other needed refinements. I don’t know what APPLE is thinking, it’s like they are limiting improvements, running out of ideas, or just ‘milking’ the customers thinking we will accept anything they give us.

Your third option is the winner...

"milking the customers thinking we will accept anything they give us"

And they have been 100% correct to-date with the vast majority of their products and services. The culprit faces the customers in the mirror.

That’s still dependent on individual usage.

For someone who prefers to work on a desktop, an iPad + optional/detachable keyboard may be more desirable than a laptop as a more portable companion.
Surface Pro is here and better than Macbook Air and iPads. With windows 11 you now can get access to mobile Kindle.
