I was a little shocked and disappointed with the new pricing. I am usually the one who keeps the grandkids in iPads, and the price jump is pretty large when you multiply it times quite a few.

But Android as a replacement? Lol - no thanks.
Go with the 9th-gen! It’s a wonderful, performative enough tablet and if anyone needs a keyboard case the Combo Touch Logitech makes for it is a far more economical alternative to the new $250 Folio while offering more protection and basically all of the same functionality (as well as a more dirt-obscuring gray color).

The 64GB, wifi-only model is currently $269 on Amazon @ssledoux :)

For me, personally, Cook’s Apple complicates the company’s products. There’re too many choices. I prefer Jobs’s Apple - Pro and Consumer.

Plus, Apple as a whole has neglected software for more hardware to sell. I don’t blame the software engineers - I think they are spread too thin (despite Apple having enough cash to pay more and acquire more developers).

Unfortunately, I just don’t see any great competition from other competitors - Samsung or Google. I really want to ditch the iPhone and iPad for a foldable - but that would break a lot of my current configurations and overall lifestyle.

Yes, think positively, logically, and non-emotionally. It also does wonders for your health.
Think about others having different viewpoints than yours, it’ll do wonders for their appreciation of you.

On a separate subject (thread subject), there’s always a reason to buy an ipad. But with the pencil, headphone, and price increase situation, this particular ipad does seem a little bit ugly duckling.

It is a bit shocking. In @usagora ‘s world money doesn’t matter but for many, it’s a huge leap in price (and reduction in flexibility and friendliness to the pocketbook as far as the many 1/8” jack headphones lying around the house).

Not all viewpoints have equal merit. When you complain about something that has multiple, cheap solutions staring you in the face that you refuse to accept, that isn't a very rational viewpoint. Cut the BS about not being able to afford a $12 pair of headphones . . . if you truly can't (which I highly doubt), then you sure have a lot of free time to post here . . . get a 2nd job.

An iPad is a luxury device. If you're buying or lusting for things you can't afford, then that's on you. You do realize you can buy used/refurbished iPads as well, right? I'm sorry if someone can't afford to buy their grandkids brand new iPads every year or whatever, but cry me a river!

For those exposed to touch devices as a first exposure to computers, there’s not much about macOS that will ever feel intuitive to them. However, those folks now have a wide range of iPads to choose from!

“Will ever feel intuitive” is a pretty strong statement. There’s so much to be done on a MacBook that’s so much more efficient and intuitive than on an iPad, that I don’t quite agree. In a black & white world, the ipad shines for consuming content, and the MacBook shines for creating that content. I’d say once someone born & raised on iPads first gets their hands on a MacBook, in some instances they might have that eye-opening wonderment moment like we did with our first iPhones after ditching our flip phone, blackberry, or Treo.

The original post seems like an awful lot of words and effort to not accomplish much of anything. Certainly didn’t change my mind.

Apple to oranges: by the same logic apple sells 1500 iphones which makes no sense since i got mbp14 for that price.

So if the new iPad uses a USB-C cord to charge, how do you charge the pencil, which requires a female lightening port to charge? Can no longer charge the pencil from the iPad? That’s not good.

An iPad is a luxury device.

Pretty soon if not now/today, a tablet or iphone or computer will be, is, or has become a virtual must-have to keep up with life’s basics. Apple’s marketing department sure agrees with that. Sure all of us could live without a car, television or iPad/phone/computer. How many people do we know who live without 2 of those 3? :)

Just buy a dongle/adapter and add it to the things you must tote around with your “all in one” device. :)

for that I would just get the ipad air - the cost difference in them is not much
It’s a $150 difference (33% more) for, basically, M1, laminated anti-glare screen, and 2nd gen pencil support. Those things are not nothing, but I can see saving the $150. How many people actually max out the processor on a modern iPad? And do most really use a pencil at all? The screen is probably the most noticeable thing, but the base iPad screen isn’t bad at all.

Also… once you’re at $600 for the air… the 11” pro is “only” $200 more, and you get double the storage, more RAM, M2, faceID, promotion, quad speakers…

Boy, they’ve really got a good lineup for upselling here, don’t they?

Even if that were the case, then you simply buy a used one if you can't afford a new one. Just like people who need a car to get to work don't have to go out and buy a brand new Audi or whatever. They buy probably an unattractive (by comparison), much older car but that's still functional to meet the need. Lots of options if one just thinks rationally about it.

It's been fun, but this discussion has drawn to a close. Take care.

...do you not know about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and S8? They've been reviewing overwhelmingly positively, including among Apple users.

But what tablet optimized apps? Android has hardly any, which makes the experience terrible, unless you just use it for consumption only or love blown up Android apps. Otherwise, it’s just an oversized Android phone as Google stopped caring about tablets a long time ago. In my opinion, Android tablets are pointless and stop trying to make them happen.

Still, a used iPad Pro 2018 or 2020 11” is still a better value and you can get used ones for cheaper than you can get for an iPad 10, and can still run Stage Manager without external display support, which the iPad 10 can’t even do. The iPad 10 is just a terrible value, just like the iPhone 14/14 Plus, just very minor improvements, but basically the same product as last year’s 13.

The adapter that comes with the pencil now has both female lightening to female lightening, and a new female USC-C to female lightening adapters. That will require a power cord to charge the pencil — they don’t provide anything to charge the pencil directly from the iPad, like you can with the 1st gen iPad Pro. If you want something portable, say for notes at school, artistic work, that’s not great.

I'm not going to buy one of the new iPads considering I bought a new M1 Air for $350 a few months ago. My advice is to buy the iPad you need at a price you can afford.

As for tablets running Android? They are great if you want to use the tablet as an entertainment device. If you want to do any real work on it, they are not great options.

I vote we kill off the tablet segment in general. Android tablets are dead and even with Google’s new release they realize few people will pay a premium for an Android slab. Apple has the market cornered so if schools and artists want to use them then cool, make like two iPads. Honestly though I’ve never seen anything great be drawn on an iPad, it’s effectively a sketchbook then created on something more appropriate. People using tablets as media devices can usually get away with using their phone or laptop so that answers that. Tablets just suck honestly and are usually a 3rd device for most people. As a tech community I wish we could all agree to not buy certain products to prove a point and give this new iPad the middle finger. Apple is literally laughing at us with this device that is essentially stuck inside its own ecosystem.

I actually always get my ipads from swappa -and there it is cheaper to get a mint air than a new ipad. I may be one of the few -but I use the pencil and the magic keyboard (the stand alone rechargeable one and the apple mouse all the time). But I don't think the new ipad is worth the cost - if you do -then apple will sell you one

This tablet primarily exists for education, honestly. That’s one reason the display isn’t laminated - it’s easier to repair, and costs less to do so.

The 10.2 is sticking around for the groups fixed on that price point, plus that thing uses all old hardware so production cost is just that, no R&D to amortize.

I’m glad they added color in. I’m confused why they chose to reuse the 2012 iPod lineup of colors, but it’s something I guess.

if you need a tablet, just get a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite at this point. The iPad lineup has become an expensive redundant mess at this point that's trying so hard to be a laptop replacement, plus the fundamental issues of iPadOS (Like the fact we still don't have multiple user account support while the Galaxy Tabs do) and you'd get more value out of the S6 Lite for the same price as the 9th gen iPad.
For some strange reason, it doesn't seem you can comprehend that there are those in this world who only want an Apple tablet. Yes, an Apple device that runs iPadOS and those individuals have zero want for an Android based OS tablet. There are those in school and as well as working professionals that use note taking programs such as Notability, as well as Goodnotes and CollaNote (new favorite of mine) and none of those are made for Android devices! Microsoft OneNote is way behind the curve, so I don't readily recommend it. Anyhow, a MacBook Air (or any Macbook for that matter) doesn't suffice at all for handwritten notes. That is ONE tiny use case. There are thousands of use cases that an Android based tablet would not work at all.

It's hilarious you think Apple is trying hard to make an iPad a "laptop replacement." They have no need to do that. Also, most people I know, don't have a need to share and have multiple user accounts. Me, my wife and my kids all have iPads and iPad Pros. No need to share a device.

iPads are not just for watching movies and listening to music.

Expand your mind. 😊 Think Different.

Who says $ really matters? Buy what you need (and want). Get'er done.

Either there's a market for tablets or there's not.

If there's no market, then the iPad would go the same way as the iPod touch or iPhone mini. You wouldn't need to convince/petition people that iPads/tablets serve no purpose. The market will decide.

Don't like tablets? Then feel free to ignore their existence (like billions of others do). They don't affect you anyway.
