Interesting. I really like that it seems Microsoft is listening intently to what people are asking for. They're making the OS people want, not the OS they think people want. This may be the first time I upgrade my OS before I buy a new machine.
My Core i5 750 is pushing a mild 3.4 GHz right now. I could probably hit much higher but it is too noisy. It might be time to get a water cooling kit and just force it to run at low RPM. My machine is dead silent at stock though. In the end I am going to blame the BIOS. I had an older ASUS board on another system where you could tinker with the fan temperature throttling to abusive lengths.

Ivy Bridge or AMD Trinity next year in a Mini-ITX system or notebook for my next machine. I could just drop in a new video card for my current desktop. For gaming, a newer processor doesn't mean that much more.

A new system also means Windows 8 for good measure. I read the two blog posts about the Start Menu and sadly, even though I hated every minute of it, had to agree with their data and my own personal usage of said Start Menu. I barely use it over my Taskbar. General search or hunting for an *insert minutiae* Control Panel item all the way in the back is what the Start Menu has become.

IMO the start menu is beautiful when you use it on your own screen with its vibrant colors. My parents were blown away when they saw me using it while I was home. Both dont care about tech a ton and my dad who uses an ipad was really impressed.

It is your opinion though, but IMO your opinion is strongly tied to your bias against Microsoft.
I have received similar awe struck sounds from my coworkers just running Windows 8 as well. I keep telling them that it's just the Start Menu.

There are a few exceptions. Unfortunately, the haters are so many in number now that those who do appeal to reality are a minority around here.
You assume people with something negative to say about Apple are haters. The reality is, the haters are in the very few. Just because I may be negative towards Apple about some things, doesn't mean I'm an Apple hater. If I was an Apple hater, why would I have an iMac and an iPhone?

I feel the same can be said for many posters here. Just because we don't lick Apple's ass with every move they make like you do, doesn't automatically mean they hate Apple. You're under an illusion. To think that this site is riddled with trolls and haters is utter folly.

It pains me to say such a thing to you, especially on the day that Steve has passed away, but you are deluded *LTD*. You've somehow convinced yourself that Apple is the be all and end all in tech, that every move Apple makes is brilliant, every move a competitor makes is terrible (even if it is exactly what Apple have done) and that anyone who doesn't agree with you automatically must hate Apple and has no real right to be on this website. I feel sorry for you to be caught up in such a nonsensical way of thinking.

What are you using for an air cooler on your 750? Have you looking into the Thermalright Silver Arrow? It's big, but it comes with very quiet fans and it's one of the best air coolers on the market along with the Noctua NH-D14.
The Silver Arrow is one of the favorites of many users of overclock.net. It's an excellent forum for all kinds of computer related info and components, especially for overclocking.

Good post. For some reason LTD doesn't get it. Or perhaps he just pretends that he doesn't. Even Apple couldn't stand such a yes man.

It is just a Hyper 212+ but the BIOS is rather aggressive with the fan. I would have to remove the fan from the motherboard's PWM control to slow down the fan. Getting an expensive air CPU cooler would just mean the same experience when attached to the motherboard. I would also be out ~$80 compared to a paltry $15 for my Hyper 212+.

The 212+ is a good cooler, especially for the price. You can get quieter fans for it so it won't be so noisy. If you go water cooling you will be out more than $80 if you go for a closed loop system. The only Corsair liquid cooler that will beat the Silver Arrow is the H100, and that is over $100. It is a nice unit, but the radiator is big. Check out overclock.net. There is an enormous amount of good info there and the users are very friendly and helpful.

I will just wait to get more BIOS/EFI controls. I could spend all day and plenty of money on "quieter" fans when it is all really controlled by the firmware. Believe me, I have looked into this.

I do know the H80/H100 have Quiet modes but I am wary about anything that signals back to the motherboard. I played around with the Antec KÜHLER H₂O 620 a few months ago but found that I would end up spending on a lot more in yet another "find" the quiet fan game, have the BIOS CPU fan settings screw things up again, or deal with the BIOS only to have a warbling pump noise nag me.

I appreciate your desires to offer advice but sadly it is of little value to me.

Read the air or water cooling forums at overclock.net or join and ask your questions there. You can also get a case with a fan controller. There is good info on quiet fans, etc. If you are serious about this you owe it to yourself to check out the forums. Just my 2 cents.
