You're assuming that the base storage being 128gb would not cost any extra than the current 64gb base.
it will cost extra, but given current storage per gb cost, 64gb additional would be about 5-10 dollars. it would be up to apple to decide if that margin is worth squeezing.

Oh well since you feel it should be free then why stop at 128? I mean a trillion dollar company like Apple should at least give 512 GB. While they're at it let's just forget about the regular iPhone 11 altogether and make the Pro Max for the same price. I mean why not? I love free!

Now lets get back to reality out of this dream world. If Apple sees that a majority of people using the 64 GB model need more storage then they'll likely upgrade the base model. If they look and see most are using 40 GB then they're not going to add something that costs money and doesn't help those customers.

I feelike you’ve read my post and then decided to ignore it.

No I’m assuming the cost will be negligible, I litterally stated that so I don’t know why you would come out with that comment.
The actual cost to Apple would be not being able to over charge users for the upgrade to 128gb.
If Apple actually priced it to reflect the cost difference to them they wouldn’t bother as it would be more expensive to produce the two storage types. The only way to make the two storage options viable is to overcharge for the larger one.

I think what Apple actually do is undercharge for the base storage and overcharge for the higher storage options. That then evens out the margin across the range and allows for a lower entry price

apple doesn't undercharge for jack, they the only phone maker charging 1000 for a 64gb base. they make plenty of margins on that as is.

The point I am making is that if the target margin on the product range overall is 20% they could sell the lower capacity model with a 10% margin and the higher capacity model with a 30% margin, averaging at 20% across the range. If they brought the higher capacity margin down to 20% the lower capacity model would have to get more expensive to bring its margin up to 20%.

Of course it’s a lot more complicated than that because you’d need to balance that with how many of each storage option you are likely to sell.

This is a common misunderstanding by people who don't understand how business works. They look at some website or YouTube video that says well the component would cost X corporation $6.73 so this means either X company should only charge me $6.73 extra or better yet not charge me at all. The problem is if you took that way of thinking to the iPhone then it would probably sell for around $300. It doesn't though. If a company adds a $6.73 component to a product they have to add the retail price of the component or take the retail price as a loss. I'm not sure how much the wholesale price of a 128 GB module vs 64 GB one but the retail price in an iPhone would be at least $50. Apple isn't going to take a $50 loss on millions of devices if they see that their actual customers using that product don't need it. As I said before it's very possible that the next iPhone might have 128 GB because Apple sees that the majority of their customers are either buying the higher model and the ones that do buy the base model are using most of their storage. Just because yours (or my) specific needs or wants don't align with the base model doesn't mean Apple will change it though.

Obviously you feel it's already overpriced so perhaps the iPhone isn't suited to your needs and wants?

Yeah, and that’s why I don’t buy the 11 pro, I’m not foolish enough to spend 1k and only get 64gb, I voted with my dollar and got a 11. Apple knows they price the pro out of reach for a huge demographic of customers hence their need for introducing the xr and the 11.

But I do understand all of that it is not my point. My point is Apple are manufacturing this issue completely as a business tactic. They could easily wear the cost of having the phone at 128gb as a base but they want to manufacture the upgrade in to their business. It’s nothing to do with the cost of the components they’re doing it on purpose. I don’t know why people are pretending it’s anything other than that. The cost of producing these devices at 128gb would be totally negligible for apple and they could still hit their base model price. People pretending this is a great move by Apple by not making you pay for something you don’t need are delusional.

Of course Apple are doing it deliberately. It’s called running a successful, profitable business.

I’m expecting 128GB to be available this year on the iPhone 12 pro max...128GB is what i need now, 256GB is overkill for me.

This is very assumptive. I have a 64gb 11 Pro and it’s plenty enough for me. I doubt I’ll ever fill it up. Not everyone needs endless amounts of storage.

If I’m gonna spend 1k for a phone I shouldn’t have a conservationist mentality for storage, that type of attitude is fine for cheap android phone.

but I get it, Apple have the need to have the 64gb so the 256gb is more enticing for anyone who wants to make full use of the new cameras. That factor I can understand, not one of these “Apple knows best” or “apple have all the data”

The lack of 128Gb option is quite frustrating. For many 64Gb is not quite enough but 256Gb is way too much. Looking at storage use on my 256Gb phone I am using 125.6Gb of storage but I could save 60Gb(!) by turning on Optimise Photos! Which would leave me using just too much space for 64Gb

then buy the model which has enough storage so you don’t need to be conservationist...

Apple always wanted you to spend more to purchase the 128G/256G mid-tier variant.

Ok? By your logic, Apple also wants us to ‘spend more on the more expensive version the AirPod Pros’, spend more on most expensive version of the MacBook Pro, ‘most expensive version of the titanium Apple Watch’, etc.

Point is, of course they’re out to make money, and well...of course they want you to purchase the higher storage option, but consumers will purchase what they can afford, not with what they’re pressured into.

Consumers will purchase a combination of what they can afford and what they need.

If I need 150Gb storage and I can afford the 256Gb model then I will buy it. If I need 100Gb storage and I can only afford the 64Gb model then I'll buy the 64Gb and make some changes. If I need 20Gb storage and I can afford the 64Gb model then I will buy it.

Then I would rebuttal the question, how much storage do you think a consumer actually believes that they ‘need’? They don’t know, Let alone they don’t even know how to access how much storage being used in their phone to the settings. So they look at the price point, they purchase exactly what they realize they can afford for a monthly payment based Financed price for the phone, and if a $200 storage price point increase pushes them over the limit, that ‘need’ is not prioritized whatsoever.

If you're not interested enough in understanding your own requirements and researching and purchasing based on a combination of that and what you are afford then I'm afraid I would call you 'stupid'.

If you're not interested enough in understanding your own requirements

That didn’t answer my question, But I’ll let it slide that you ignored it. I’ll just leave it at that consumers don’t know how much storage they need. Like I said, try to find any average consumer and ask them if they know how to access their storage through Settings, and the most of them don’t. So what does that tell you? I don’t think that makes anyone ’stupid’, (which rather is not an appropriate comment on your behalf), but it goes to show you that they’re not spending more money on something that they don’t even know what they need in the first place. Case in point.

But a consumer would know how much storage they need by looking at how much storage they use on their existing device. If they can’t even be bothered to do that most basic of research before spending a lot of money then I’m afraid I can’t help or provide any sympathy if you buy the wrong device. I would never part with so much money without being absolutely sure that the device is going to meet my needs and nor should *anyone* else, ever.

The real trick of 64GB base is to force you to upgrade your iPhone. One of the main reasons why the phone is slow is that there is too little remaining storage space. So when you gradually use up most of the storage space of your phone, you will have to upgrade your phone.
