To everyone who doesn't see the lines: I envy you. It's possible you got a fluke MBA, or just can't see them, but either way, lucky you. This issue definitely does exist and it affects most -- if not all -- Rev 2 MBAs (especially if Apple is telling people that's how it's supposed to be).

With all due respect, have you ever considered the "fluke" may be with the computers you saw? I live near Denver and have been to three Apple stores, purchased one and have not seen the problem on any of the computers in any of the stores. I feel bad for anyone who had this issue, but I have to reiterate, you are in the minority.

MBA Replacement - Week 48

Hey,

I've just got my first MBA replacement. It's a Week 48 unit and has still the same issues:

  • no four finger gesture
  • grey lines
  • flickering screen, well visible when viewing the line-pattern posted some pages ago.

Maybe I could live with the grey lines, but not with getting headache when using the device longer than 20minutes at a time.
(may it be possible that the grey lines are some kind of interference caused by the flickering screen?!)

Well, I called the apple care line and this time they connected me to the 2nd level support.
There, I was told that these issues are already known and that I am not the first customer complainig about that. But they also told me that these issues are in spec and there is no possibility to get them fixed.

They offered me to get my money back or to get a further replacement, but they told me that its highly unlikely to get a "good" one.

They also told me that they are very interested in satisfied customers and they couldn't believe that apple won't fix that. So they advised me to try it again in a few weeks. It sounds that they will fix these things in the near future.

I'll get my money back for now. I'll keep an eye on this forum and I'll try it again in a few weeks...

It doesn't really matter if the people with the defective display is minority or not... If this is a problem for majority of people and Apple is saying 'Within Spec' thing, then that is completely crazy. Afterall it's major enough (what's with the page number here?) to be notified by several people and by the look of it, it's serious if you're the unlucky one to get caught. Love fanboys. It almost sounds like you all work for Apple and want to abandon the problem fast.

It's funny Apple is saying you are unlikely to get a good one... because I do believe some actually do have good ones... Once again, it's Apple's time when they don't want to admit the problems but we will see at least after 10.5.6 gets released and if hardware gets any better around then...

Hi,

I'm a long time reader of this forum, but never posted. I've registered
just now to post one single doubt I have.

Why is there not a single photo of the *AIR* showing the faint lines?

The above screenshot is from a *MacBook Pro*, and the other screenshot
shown a few times around here is a *PowerBook running Tiger*.

I'm interested in this, because I'm about to get an Air ordered
Nov 3 (sic!) and I'd like to check it out in the store when it (finally)
arrives.

Bye,
Chris.

Update: I got the Air: no lines whatsoever - display is as clear as it gets! But: no 4 finger gesture.

This is a 1.86/128SSD Model ordered in Italy with a US key layout (the Italian layout is useless for programmers).

I know some hate it if people with a good display post here - still - I think
it's important to understand that not all displays are affected.

Bye,
Chris.

I see no one feels it... until it's repeated dozen times by same person. Good to see individual reports of working models. And you said you have a US keyboard layout yet no four finger swipes? That is the first to hear the exception.

Dude, why don't you take a look at post #433 and notice how you are becoming that same person as the one you were complaining about.
You do not have a MBA yet you consistently keep posting over and over as if you feel the need to press it down our throats how you feel on this matter. Why don't you let the people that actually HAVE a MBA discuss this back and forth as we as owners speak from experience, you don't.

I try to ignore the flamers, they add nothing to the conversation other to work others up, which in this case he did. Just ignore it.

MacBook Air Horizontal Lines

Just returned my MacBook Air today for a refund. Purchased it at a store on October 31 (week 43, one of the first ones to hit stores). However, I've been busy so I stupidly did not open it until last night. I'm pretty picky, and I was working in the dark, so I noticed the lines right away (in bright light, they are harder to see), but didn't think much of them until I stumbled across this link in the Apple Discussions. Once I saw this discussion and really took note of the lines, they are REALLY annoying. It's like the FedEx arrow: once you see it, you can't avoid looking at it.

Even though the return period for my MBA expired on November 14, the Apple Store in Columbia, Maryland, was amazing. The Genius working there saw the lines immediately when I loaded up Google.com, and he went to discuss the issue with his manager. Both of them were seemingly aware of the problems with the MBA screens, and did not give me a hard time at all. They immediately offered me a refund and marked my MBA as "DOA" in the computer system.

I looked at the 2 MacBook Airs (Rev 2) they had on display, and both had the issue with the lines.

Both the store manager and the Genius said they haven't heard anything about Apple fixing the problem, and just told me to wait and see what happens. They offered to give me a replacement new one, but said it would most likely have the line issue as well. They were the ones that recommend I just get a refund, and it took about 2 minutes.

So now I have to decide how long I want to wait for the issue to be fixed, since I really wanted the new MBA for traveling. Plus, I need to decide whether or not to cancel my order for the 24-inch LCD, since it can't be powered by my old MacBook Pro. SO FRUSTRATING.

So, finally I had the chance to check one of the first MBA2s on display here in Germany. And indeed I saw the so called horizontal lines. Don't get me wrong but this is an easy one: There is no problem with the Nvidia card or any other issue that could be fixed by a firmware patch.

This phenomenon is called "destructive wave interference" in physics and results from the display surface which acts as a grating. You could easily see it when you turn the display by 90 degrees and slightly move it right and left - the grey lines will be wandering. (This is the "flickering" as you never sit still) I suppose the reason is a diffrent and more uneven coating although I coulnt really verify any difference between rev A and rev B in store. I dont wanna join the discussion whether there are units without that problems or not, but I doubt that the same combination of lcd panel and surface (if they dont stick together anyway) can be flawless.

So either hope apple changes the supplier or we have to live with it.

Could you please state where Rev. 2 MBAs are already in display? I´t like to take a look, too?

What are those people's point when they don't have a problem?
Oh, they want to feel superior... Unless you people are so sure that, with some fact that you can recommend all potential buyers to get one already, which I fail to find thus far.

I don't deny there is an issue,

but - for a thread that is THIS LONG - it is interesting that only 15 people (as of right now) on this forum have voted to say they are affected by this issue.....

I don't want to keep posting just to fill in the people who actually don't read my posts and screw the thread, but for about the 5th time, I do own a Rev A. And even more, I was willing to buy Rev B :D but certainly, a hardware problem that is not so simple to fix scared me off for now... because I don't want to waste my time replacing my main machine over and over and makes my work on halt and I guess I have to apologize posting in here for that reason... I'm not even close to flaming... And what if the issue is for 15 people in the entire world (with all of potential buyers like me)? That doesn't stop those people from wanting to fix the issue and exchanging information about it... I thought those people could do that here. Except, you people hate to have us dig the problem that is even not your problem (for those who have the great perfect ones)

Oh no a blog entry on this issue! Some people might rush to shutdown the site...

The thread is supposed to have been 10 pages long by now... Yet for those who post 'ignore' when if they want to, they can just ignore instead of actually make a reply... I guess I have to do the 'summary' post again at page 25 or something like on 17 just so people can track the situation without needing to read helpless posts, like telling how I don't have a MBA and supposed to get lost etc...

Hey I am always the first to help in any problem, wait, you have a problem?LOL
:)

Ya know, dude, i am pleased you have a brillant MBA.
I would be even more pleased, if i had one, too.
And i would be overwhelmingly pleased, if everyone had a brilliant MBA.

However, there is an issue that needs to be fixed and, to finally sum up, i would highly appreciate if Apple announced a fix or, at least, a official statement in that concern.

Maybe IF it was wide spread but its not, no update will be coming.
