Whatever works for you. Touch ID works for me 8 times out of 10. Nothing is perfect and that ratio is good enough for me.
I can't say what my success ratio with Touch ID was, but I know I regularly had to use my PIN--which I remembered instantly.

With Face ID I find myself needing to use my PIN less often; to the point I have to consciously think about my PIN.

Just asking: would you still want this if Face ID was 100% perfect? Worked every time and had a wider scan angle? (note, it works 99% of the time for me, but let’s say you’re one of those who consider it less reliable than Touch ID)

For me, I had some lousy experience with Touch ID, possibly due to the fact that my skin is not dry. But even if it worked 100% I do believe I would prefer fatial recognition.
I would rather have Touch ID then Face ID. My Face ID when activated takes for ever. It’s really a joke if you ask me. I’d much rather have Touch ID.

I would. I think Face ID looks great, and can see a lot of situations where'd I'd use it, but I'd also like something just like this included as well because there are many times during the day where I reach over and unlock my phone when I'm not even looking at it yet, which is kind of force of habit at work. Also, when it's on my night stand I just reach over a lot and unlock it. Now, maybe if the wider angles get extreme it'll work fine in those cases.

I don't want FaceID gone, I like it and want it to improve, but I'd love this in addition to FaceID and I'm sure I'd use both of they were interchangeable. This solution looks so elegant, it belongs in Apple products.

It’s funny that Apple is down on Touch ID, I personal perfer it to Face ID, but what’s wrong is that Apple just went nuts over the Touch Bar and unlocking you MacBook Pro with Touch ID and now half a year later it’s old tech? I liked Face ID for certain situations but for the most part I find Touch ID much more convenient.

That's one theory. Another theory is they tried what the OP is suggesting and couldn't get it and went on to FaceID. Only a few high level Apple insiders will know the real truth. Surely none of us will ever know the truth. Don't listen to everything the Apple PR machine tells us either. They won't give insider info.
Exactly. Of course they’re not going to say “we couldn’t embed Touch ID under the screen so we settled for just Face ID”

Just curious, who said that the Touch Bar is "Old tech"? Are you asserting that or did somebody from Apple make that insinuation?

Just in comparison by my own opinion, touch ID would not be considered old technology, it would just be considered technology that is no longer going to be utilized by Apple in place of Face ID.

I would love to see Touch ID under the screen like on this video. Face ID is great and works well, but there are some situation where having Touch ID as well would be good, such as if phone is flat on table not pointing at face (such as on my bedside cupboard), or when in landscape.

I would not rule out Apple adding to later phone. After all other devices provide multiple unlock options, such as new MacBook Pro can be opened with Touch ID or using Apple Watch

If Apple brings Touch ID back on the next X, I will sell my current X and buy the new one. I don’t even use the Face ID on mine I don’t like it. I hate how you can’t unlock your phone from the side. Or on the table. If you ask me Face I’d is a downgrade to Touch ID.

And I am the exact opposite, I thought I was going to hate Face ID but it turns out it’s my favorite feature in the iPhone X.

I’m at the point now where my iPad Air 2 is frustrating me because I keep using iPhone X gestures on it and waiting for Face ID to recognize and unlock and then I remember I have to put my finger on the button. Yuck.

Oh ok, thanks for the insider info!
Why do you think they bought the company that created it?

But from the looks of it other manufacturers are building on it, the way its described in the ops video with the sensor built into the OLED display seems like the logical next step. It seems like a technology that Apple is ditching before it had a chance to reach its full potential.
Apple is years ahead of the other manufacturers with FaceId. If you need a permanent icon on the screen for TouchID then you are better off with a button.

That is exactly how I feel, and I do have an iPhone X.

Anyone who says "Face ID is better" is not being objective. FaceID sure is more technologically advanced, and it seems cool. But its no more or less better than Touch ID in the end. TouchID has advantages like not needing to be literally pointed at your face (right side up only!) to work.

And there is clearly frustration growing with people not liking FaceID who would prefer a TouchID solution in their phone for multiple reasons. How I use my phone and how you use your phone are different. And we can have solutions that fit both use cases without compromising. If Apple gives us both, everyone's happy.

I think Apple SHOULD use both in their devices. Heck it makes 2 factor authentication automatic at that point.

No way would I want to have to authenticate with FaceID, then need to unlock my phone with TouchID. Or Vice Versa.
Surely that is something which could be definable in settings. It would be good for those very security conscious. Personally, I cannot see any more hassle in pushing virtual home button to unlock against having to swipe upwards

This is just plain ridiculous. It's one thing to whine over Touch ID like a teenager losing their first love. But to then claim everyone who doesn't agree is wrong is just wayyyyy over-the-top.

I do like Face ID better, plain and simple. As I mentioned in another post, I am starting to forget my PIN since I don't use it nearly as often as I did with Touch ID. But, I suppose that counts as a negative to the I Hate Face ID crowd lol.

Apple is not known as a company that allows us choice :)
I wouldn't want both to authenticate and unlock, but understand others may wish to do so. A choice wold be preferable then.

Ha I remember my pin more now then I ever did with my iPhone 7. When Face ID is activated anyway. This Face ID is a joke. Mine hardly even works. I put it my pin probably close to 10 times a day when it’s activated.

Yeah wouldn’t been better to give us a choice just like they did with the pin vs Touch ID. Or now I guess pin vs “sh*t ID”

Apple was never able to get TouchID right.
Yeah well I guess they should’ve kept working on it. Cause this Face ID is freakin joke. I would’ve rather then put the Touch ID sensor on the power button

In 4 weeks, I have used my passcode exactly 3 times and two of those were following restarts. I'll say it again, using RTW and FID is like having a phone that doesn't lock.

If FaceID is that bad, then why do you keep the X?
Already bought it. Would lose a few hundred if I sold it and I don’t like how big the bezels are on the 8 and 8 plus. So I just turn off all security on my phone and enjoy the rest of it.

Maybe for some. Not me tho. Mine works about half of the time. Like I said when it’s activated. The lock with just scan and vibrate. Then you have to put the passcode in. Or let the screen go black and raise and try again.

Agreed. Mine has been near flawless. Must be some ugly faces out there that the camera simply does not want to see!:p
Yeah probably so. That’s ok I much rather have Touch ID. Something us ugly people can actually get to work more then half the time.
