Yes, but they won't be creating a version 2 of touchid, or other improvements.
Technically speaking the iPhone 6S and later has the TouchID 2 with an updated sensor for quicker response times.

I work with my hands and my right hand thumb print (the finger I would use to unlock my phone) is worn to the point I can't even add it to touch ID. Touch ID on my 6S, iPad Air 2 and iPad 5 tell me to "completely cover the sensor" when it definitely is. With enough time and effort I can get it to register, however it doesn't unlock. I've added my thumb 10 times (even keeping all previous registers) and still doesn't work. No problems with other fingers.
It drives me insane and I'm always doing this awkward phone shuffle to use my index finger or left thumb.
