1- You don't need TB to do that and you can still do that presently.
right. i already said that.. up there #

2- You won't get more computationnal power since the nMP, as presented, has only one CPU and a max of two GPU. A conventional workstation can have two CPU and multiple GPU (more than two) and more RAM.
'you' as in me or 'you' as in someone else?
because here's what i paid $3000 for: (actually- over 3g but whatever)

i think i'll be fine with one cpu and max2 gpu.

You as in you...

And if that Mac Pro is enough for you with only 7GB of ram and as you said earlier only about 2.5TB of data then maybe you don't really need a Mac Pro... You do know that the current iMac would be more powerful and less costly than your present MP and you would get your cherished TB port!

In short, the mac pro, new or old, may not be the best machine for you.

yeah.. i've definitely considered an imac (multiple times) in the past.. some of the things which keep me from using one are:
-- i sometimes travel with the mp in a cab or on an airplane and an imac is less suited for this (and obviously, i definitely like the new form factor for this.. in fact, it was the first and only comment i made on the day it was announced)
-- i'll often see people (online) encountering problems with the software i use in combo with iMacs and mac minis and 13" mbps.. sure, there could be some user error in there or whatever but i generally don't investigate because it's no difference to me.. my mp runs the software just fine.
-- when i'm out of town, i'll often use those chances to make very hi-res renderings.. as in the computer is running full bore for a week or two.. my mp is seven years old and has done this at least 20 times.. and it has not broken. not once.. i turn it on now and it acts the same way as when i turned it on 7 years ago.. would you trust an iMac to do this?

-- There are travelling case for the iMac if you need one.
-- This may at one time been true, when transitioning from the G4/G5 to Intel but today such bug is something really really rare since they all use the same intel/GPU components.
-- An iMac today will be faster than your present Mac Pro with limited ram and ATI5770 GPU... Especially if you use a cuda enabled renderer.

I don't know which is funnier, posters mulling over the details of a machine about which little is known or people trying to convince me that external drives are better than internal ones.

As noted by someone earlier this thread is a hoot. So much anger from users that Apple doesn't really care much about.

when i said i've considered an imac multiple times in the past, i really meant it.. and i don't buy blindly- i do the research.. i've seen a zillion comments just like these already and i've seen a zillion more saying otherwise.. throw in my own personal experience/needs and i've settled on the fact that I'm a mac pro user..

you forgot to answer the part about 'would you trust an imac to run the way i run software and last 6+ years?' ...because i don't.. maybe three years in which case, i end up spending more on my desktop.. as is now, i expect (and have been granted this for 2 cycles) 6years out of a 3g computer or 500/year.. i don't see an imac giving me that value

[and hey- you don't even know what it is i do or where computers fit into my work.. but when people say things like 'a computer is nothing but a tool', that's exactly the way i view it.. and i have lots of other tools which are more expensive than my computers.. the computer isn't an end all/be all for me.. i just need something that does what i need and doesn't break and is a pleasure to use.. just like all my other tools.. and i've used plenty of cheaper tools and the past and i've broke plenty of them.. pro grade tools are usually well worth the cost because you end up spending less on them as opposed to several iterations of cheaper tools.. and they work better

Especially if you use a cuda enabled renderer.
thankfully for me, my render devs drink koolaid too.

i'm going to go ahead and assume that comment is directed at me.. if so, do you really, in any way shape or form, see any evidence in any of my posts where i'm trying to convince you that external drives are better than internal ones?

if not, why would you make such a comment?

No, not directed at you.

If they used standard PCB and component yes. But we are talking about a limited run new form factor component for the GPU and CPU board...

The Mac Pro doesn't produce enough sales to justify a big production of those parts.

Please show evidence of your statement above, please...nowhere is it said that the GPU is non-standard.

The format isn't standard. It isnt a pcie card. It uses a proprietary connection. One of the card also has the connector for the pcie ssd.

But for the price of one nmp you can buy a new up to date fully loaded imac every 2 years and make money selling the previous one.

we don't know the price.
and why do i want to sell/rebuy a computer every two years.. that stuff is a hassle that i'd rather avoid.. i like to buy one every six years then give it to someone that might need it afterward.
and i have two laptops in rotation so i get my new tech fix from other angles without 6year lulls.

but if this is somehow a 'you don't deserve to use a macpro and it's too much computer for you and facebook is that # way' then whatever.. those types of comments don't sway how i feel.. i mean i honestly, without a doubt, feel a mac pro is exactly the computer i need.

With the config that they showed we can estimate the price. The w9000 details for $3.2k, amd may make a volume discount but it won't be all that much. Same goes for the cpu. As shown it will be very expensive, but hey buddy, it's your money... Some people buy dodge ram 350 for city errands and grocery shopping.

Personnaly, i prefer to buy the right tool for the right job, which is why at home in my studio i have a lowly 2010 i3 imac for photoshop and painter12. I also have a more powerful pc for 3ds max and autocad. At work we need a bigger tool and we have a big mix of mp and hp workstation.

so, according to all the stuff i've said, i'm using the wrong computer and it's overpowered and i'm wasting my money? then imply (and yes, i could be taking that the wrong way) that my needs are no more than some at home photoshop work.. then go on to talk about max and autocad as if those types of software deserve to be run on a pro machine?

this, to me, makes no sense at all.. sorry

Wtf are you talking about???
Do you have a reading comprehension problem or are you just playing dumb and trolling? Seriously...

I told you it was ok if you wan't to buy the nmp, nobody care if you do...
For what you say you are doing it will be overprice and overkill, but it's your money. What? do you need me to tell you that you really need it? Why do you care? I sure don't.

Buy it, don't buy it who cares! I don't even think it matters to apple anymore either.

I'm not saying anything like that

(well, maybe the trolling bit to some extent.. because it's slightly funny, in an Internet sort of way, to watch you post-after-post tell me what kind of computer I need when you have no clue what I use it for )

It's not funny at all when everyone tries to stop you, and you keep argumenting. Just shut up! Nobody wants to hear you. Just like tuxon86 said in his post, buy what you want, when you want, where you want. You look like a 5-year old kid crying because everyone says that you're wrong. I want the new Mac Pro, but it's expensive, useless to me, so, I buy an iMac. All that simple. If you need a cheap netbook, you can get for 300$ an horrible Intel Atom computer. Or, if you NEED a powerful netbook, you get the MBA for 1K$. If you don't care about the speed, you SIMPLY DON'T NEED a MBA. If you do, then this would be the right choice for you.

Excuse me but we don't want a german grammar teacher on this forum.

I'm terribly sorry. I'll stop trying to help people.

I'm actually just trying to increase my post count. This topic seemed like a good place. Long, few participants, not much point (no disrespect to the original poster). Any tips?

awww.. come on.
i said the trolling bit had some hints of truth in there.. i didn't say i was a troll.. those are two different things (or.- im not excited and happy that i might of made you upset. it bums me out actually)

nah.. but there are a few Mohels in the neighborhood.. i bet they have some laying around.

I'm and have, respectively. Also, the use of appropriate capital letters makes written language easier to read.

130 and counting!

I reckon I could do pro' stuff on the new Mac Pro. It'd easily be powerful enough to SSH to the real computational machine... (Throw a bone to the topic, hey?)
