I’ve never agreed with the coffee analogy either as it makes it sound like you’re better off not having the coffee lol. Nah, I need a coffee in the morning much more than I need to spend an extra £300-400 more on an iPhone. Tim Cook made it sound like you should justify a purchase by sacrificing something else to make it feel less expensive. I can afford an XS Max, I just don’t want to spend that much on an iPhone as my 8+ is plenty good enough. Sure, I have to go through the hardship of placing my finger on a button and waiting 0.38 seconds for the phone to open but it gets me by lol.

I remember once buying an iPhone 5c (not too long after they had come out) from a shop. Numerous attempts with different sim cards failed to activate it.

I presumed someone had taken out a contract on it then just not bothering paying the monthly payment or maybe it was stolen. The shop should have done more checking on it certainly. I did get an iPhone 5 and £10 off it from them for my trouble. Nowadays I just wouldn't buy anything second-hand or refurbished - you just don't know what you're getting into.

Just curious ... Why all on your phone?

I am a huge hobbyist photographer. Not like most, I like taking pictures of things to remember because I like to reflect and remember a lot. I journal daily as I find it extremely de-stressing. I like having access to all my photos because I like to refer to them when talking with coworkers / friends / family (not regularly to be annoying, though). But also because my memory isn't that great so I take a lot of photos to help me remember.

One reason - I've used Google Photos up until now, and it handles my 172gb very well. But I'm trying to free myself from Google so I uploaded everything to iCloud. Because my phone is 512, might as well use the space. For family birthdays I'm usually the one posting 10+ photos of that person over the last 20 years.

When switching to iCloud I already had 52GB of my photos on my iPhone. Figured why not just put the rest on there when I got all 172GB on my MacBook Pro.

Sometimes you absolutely need to have Aunt Mary's 2015 birthday party pictures at hand at all times. Just in case.

Agreed. This is a MUST.

I seriously hope that photo(s) are properly tagged. :D

Sadly, no. Almost none of them are tagged. I've relied heavily on Google's photo recognition. It is my goal to get my photos organized in 2019 now that they're all in iCloud. I rely on location, date, and my failing memory now. :(

I can see your point. Hope you have another backup besides iCloud. It has borked my photos a couple of times - don't use it any longer for critical / important items.

Tagging .... a serious pain but inn the end worth it.

Thanks for the warning. And yes, I should have tagged :(. I've got 2 CCC drives and 1 TM drive for a backup. <sigh>

According to ‘Consumer intelligent research’, the iPhone XR was estimated to be 32% of iPhone sales in the month of November, and that’s not including December as a close out for the holidays yet. So I think that will say a lot for Apple, especially being that it’s $250 cheaper under the XS. Aside from this new phone and form factor, it’s all about the price point.

The percentage of 33% is one thing, the unit volume is another. We obviously will not know how many units of iphones are sold going forward.

I gather Apple is no longer reporting units sold, and Consumer Intelligence can’t corroborate any ‘Real’ numbers either. But I find this report interesting where it seems like it _could_be somewhat accurate based off a full month of the XR offering. I suspect the XR also sold very well throughout the month of December, Especially given Apples marketing and trade-offers.

Apple needs to start cutting features from older devices. There is no way they should offer new features to old and new phones. Give people features so it is worth upgrading to
If a device is able to use new features why on earth should you need to buy new? I can see getting a new device as long as their old can no longer do what they ask of it...oh well what's another payment for some people who never get their current product payed for.

Here’s a quote from the Verge’s report card on Samsung. Sound familiar? Those darn Samsungs are too expensive! Oh wait, the high end Samsung is popular just like the high end Apple iPhones. Giess they aren’t too expensive...

‘The Note 9 also showed that Samsung could play ball with Apple in the $1,000 smartphone league. Even though the Note 9 started at $999 for a 128GB model, the $1,249 512GB version ended up being surprisingly popular. The success of the Note 9 (and its high sticker price) helped Samsung turn its financials around by the end of the year, with the company returning record profits in the third quarter.’

Packing lunch is a great way to save money. Probably healthier too. Now going out to lunch with colleagues have benefits too, like networking, social interaction, etc. So it's not all positives.

The point is that there are 100's of ways to move money from one pocket to another to pay for things. Apple would love you to buy an iPhone instead of a Starbucks. Starbucks would prefer you to buy a coffee every day and to continue with an iPhone 5.

Everything in moderation. Buy a good coffee every once in a while. Cut down on the cigarettes. Drink water, no soda. But by all means, splurge on the 512XsMax.;)

Edit - added ;) emoji
Exactly....and why should we cut out everything else just because Apple have decided they want to be a bit more premium? Nah, I'll buy a Samsung and take the coffee too.

The OP doesn't seem too far off the mark.

I live in Washington, DC and I’ve seen so many X/XS and XS Max in the wild but have yet to see one XR. Of course I see many Android phones but the iPhones stick out so much. There are even kids my daughter’s age (7) walking around with a X or XS. My father even went and bought my daughter a X for her 7th birthday last month, and I thought it was ridiculous for a 7yo to have a 1k phone

It's ridiculous for a 7 year old to have a phone. Period.
