Am I the only one who wants a small, unbreakable phone with iOS. I do not want to pay for face recognition, expensive camera's, large beautiful screens, etc. I hardly take pictures, I do not watch movies. Just basic communication, an occasional website visit, maps, WhatsApp, and maybe a few more. It just should be SMALL and UNBREAKABLE and if the screen breaks it should be easy and not too expensive to replace.

I prefer the chassis of the 6/7/8 iPhone. The bezel doesn’t bother me. I had an X and returned it for a 7.

OP - I'd say you are in a small minority. Otherwise, Apple would make something like that. Your best bet at this point is to buy the XR and a big OtterBox case for it. Or - go find yourself a nice flip phone. I'm pretty sure they still make one or two of them.

"Am I the only one" is quite popular on this forum lol.. back when I had the 5 and the 6 was announced I hated the fact that the phones were getting bigger. Even the small difference going from a 4 to a 5 annoyed me. Now after owning the 6 and 7 and now the XS i am used to the size(XS basically the same size as the 7(in a case) without a case). I do agree and think a smaller xs style phone would sell, just how much would it sell to make it worthwhile for Apple..prob not enough or it would be available. Just imagine an Se size with Xs style screen with no bezels..roughly 5" screen diagonally.. I would buy that.

Yes the X and the 6/7/8 are same size but I hate that the almost total screen real estate on the X chassis. My thumb was aching acceding the bottom of the phone. For 1 ha s use I prefer the 6/7/8 chassis. It’s the bezel that for me is a natural thumb use.

I actually like the size of the X.

I went from 5 -> 6 plus -> 7 -> x, and I find the X to be a good tradeoff.

I wouldn't want to go any larger though.

Steve Jobs said the same thing about that original iPhone. :p

Get an iPhone SE then. By the way, no phone (especially ANY iPhone) is unbreakable.

I like my X a lot but I do miss the days of the 3G and 4 form factor.

I've actually been considering picking up an used 4S from somewhere since Apple is allowing the downgrade to iOS 6. Would make a good outdoors/rugged/camping/bar phone.

No, you’re not. Some people—like me—use an iPhone primarily as a phone. I use it for Waze, coupons at stores, checking mail, and I have to have it to receive notifications on my Apple Watch. For everything else, there is iPad. That’s why I “downgraded” to the newest SE and love it. Unfortunately I recently saw a chart that claimed only 6-7% of iPhone owners use an SE, so we are in a small minority.

That makes sense. I don’t have large hands either, but I have found that when I use a smartphone, I am using it with two handsome mostly. If I’m in a situation where I only have one hand available, I figure I shouldn’t be using a smartphone. That very well just be me though and everyone is different. Lastly, is a .7 inch difference really enough to make or break this experience. I may be off base and certainly don’t want to be rude, but I just struggle to see that big of a difference in that .7 inches. Maybe I can just adjust quickly, but I never even think about the size of my Xs Max now that I’ve had it for a day.

I had a 6s for nearly two years. I hated every time I had to use it. It was too big, too uncomfortable, and it set off my carpal tunnel. I had the money saved to buy the X. I only buy a new phone every two years, but I get the latest and greatest when I do. I couldn’t buy the X, not because of the money, but because of the size. I bought the SE instead, it felt wrong, it wasn’t the latest and greatest, in fact it was no more powerful than the phone I was replacing.
Then I used it. It felt like coming home, it felt like getting into a warm bath, it felt like putting on clothes that have just come out of the dryer. It reminded me that I buy iPhones because I love them, not just because I prefer them to android.
I don’t like that the next phone I buy will be the least worst option, not a phone I can love. If Apple made an SE sized phone with the same functionality and spec as the Xs, I would happily pay the same price as a Xs max, because I would love that phone.
Instead I am using the most outdated phone I have ever used, with no immediate plans to replace it, because every phone on offer will actually cause me pain, and I would be resentful of them.

That isn’t what I said. Read it again.

Nope. My point is that iOS is now and always has been too big for a screen that small. I made no comment about what people should or shouldn’t want or buy.

I didn’t say bad. I said too big. You inserted the word “bad.”

Right. But Apple has never done that. Because iOS was always intended for a bigger screen.

So, after all that you finally made a comment that’s relevant to what I actually said.

Developers aren’t the issue. The OS is. As I noted before, just look at how much of a 4 inch screen is taken up by the keyboard. In portrait it’s barely usable. In landscape it’s impossible. That’s just one example of how iOS is optimized for a larger screen.

I’m not making a value judgment about what you should want or buy. I’m pointing out an easily demonstrated design issue.

I think we’re just going to have to agree to disagree.

Just for funsies, check out the first minute of Joe Rogan's podcast. "I fu**** up, this is too big" as he holds up the Excess Max.

That’s hilarious. It’s so interesting and enlightening listening to “normal” (non-techie) people talking about tech. Particularly surprising to me was hearing how they both seemed to miss using one-handed phones, but not enough to question the current product line. It’s like the celebrity guest said: “Apple got me.” He buys whatever Apple sells without much thought to his actual needs and preferences. I think that’s telling of a lot of the population.

I do like having a quality built-in camera, but it would be nice for Apple to offer a super bare bones phone with ios for those who want that. I would likely take that over a phablet.

I felt the exact same thing coming back to a 4” iphone from an iphone Plus after 3 months.

Yes it seems many replies to my question have read it as something like "How do we stop Apple from making iphones bigger than 4". Weird! Fanboys maybe?

I couldn't give a **** what size other Apple phones are as long as they still make a 4" one.

You are absolutely right. They can build 7'' phones if they want and if there are people who will buy it. But discontinuing the SE makes me so angry. Millions of people were happy with the SE BECAUSE of it’s size. I really don’t understand why Apple decided to kick these customers in the face. It’s the same thing as with the phone jack. I don’t know anyone who said “oh, cool, I cannot use all my headphones with the iPhone anymore”. Now they don’t even put an adapter in the box anymore. Why?
If this company continues to annoy customers it will die. Apple has become arrogant. They are doing things nobody wants just because they can do it.
If Apple is showing a SE-sized phone at the next presentation, I will leave this company. It will be hard and I will be sad because I’m 100 percent in the Apple universe. But if they continue to build products that are not useful for me, I have no other choice.

I don't think that is entirely true. If the SE was making substantial money for the company then they would have kept making it. At the end of the day they are a business and a business who needs to puts its money and research time into something that will turn the most profit

Apple did not get where is is today by being arrogant and doing things to annoy it customers.

The market is clearly wanting larger phones and that is what Apple is giving their customers.

By now you must realize that 4” phones are relic of the past with few still wanting them. I can not imagine doing what I do on my MAX on a 4” screen. I do not think I could even type on the keyboard.

Where will you go for your 4” phone?

I went for from the SE to the Xs Max and I am thrilled. But I think you're right that there is a market for a phone the size of the SE. For me, thought - the Max is the best phone I've ever owned.

This x 100. Exact same reasons why I refuse to get a newer iPhone!

Exactly. When tech is composed of internal components that are soldered, made of glass, etc., it’s going to be breakable, because there are every small, intricate, fragile parts that are composed together and if the phone is dropped, the impact alone could cause internal damage. So I’m not sure why some think that an ‘unbreakable’ Smart Phone should be a feasible thing for smart phone manufacturers.
