That's fine. All people are asking for is the option of buying a smaller sized phone. You could keep using huge phones if that's what you're into.

They aren’t selling enough to justify offering them.

If you sold pancakes and waffles, and sold 1 waffle every day and 600 pancakes, your probably going to stop offering the waffle. Might piss off the waffle buyer, but there isn’t any waffle huts nearby, and it’s more likely they’ll just switch to a pancake.

Overwhelming amount of people? So these imaginary people don’t use IPads, laptops, or desktops? While working, you know a real job, I have to use a laptop or desktop. I couldn’t do my job on a phone. At home I use an IPad primarily and have a quad core Mac mini for important things. The phone is a telephone, for communications, I certainly don’t live my life on it.

What I see is an addiction problem. The addicts want a bigger phone every year because they are on it all day long. Heavy social media users, etc. Most of the SE fans use that device as a portable phone, with portability being high on the list. They do not want to carry a phablet around with them, and let’s be honest the current set of iPhones are mostly phablets. I’m still using a 7, and the minute I started carrying it daily, I missed my 6 which iirc is SE sized.

It is addiction as I said above. I use my phone for calls, text, email, iPod primarily. A few times a day I check the web at work on safari, and maybe check some home automation media apps, and maybe use the calculator. Occasionally I will take a photo. It’s what I use for quick checks on whatever, quick stuff. I don’t do selfies or social media apps as I’m not a narcissist. It’s a younger generation driving the market and these phablet phones, people who are addicted to the phone. I see it everyday with people driving while surfing their phone, swerving, driving slow, stopped with a green light in front of them, at the movie theater that person who just can’t go 90 or 120 minutes without leaving the damn thing off. At the gym, where you are supposed to exercise, nope they’d rather hog a machine or bench watching videos. I even see people playing video games at the gym. It’s an epidemic.

But maybe it’s just a generation thing. If I want to watch a film, I’m not watching it on my phone, ever. I want a big screen. I don’t play video games any longer and haven’t since I was a kid as I have a mortgage, bills, etc. But if I did, I want a large(r) screen. Then there is size. I use a case and/or holster. Even if putting in a pocket these phones are large, heavy. Steve Jobs had a great point about size. Maybe next year they’ll release an IPad mini sized IPhone 11, and the smallest size will be the max. There will be a whole new market for case designers who design Chewbacca shoulder straps for people with their iPhone extra max. Perhaps a fold em up keyboard and mouse.

World gone mad ;)
People are going to keep staring at their screens until there is another way to get all that information without looking at one.

Get eleventy gazillion people to buy it and Apple will make it.
I would guess if you ordered 5 million of them, Apple would make it. Then, you could sell, 4,999,999 of them on eBay and Swappa.

Hey, wait a minute, I'll buy one so you will only have 4,999,998 left to sell.

I like a small, discrete, unobtrusive, easy to handle and carry device. The 5s/SE is perfect for me. I have an ipad. I have a Mac. I have a TV. My phone keeps me in touch when I am away from the other devices. That is it. I want the device I carry around to be smaller ... not bigger. I tried the 6s. Nope. The SE is a big as I am willing to go.

I have been waiting for an update to the SE, but it didn't come. I can't imagine they were selling very many of the last generation of the SE. Few people want to spend money on old tech. Can't say I blame them. The SE may have to last me a good while ... and that is perfectly OK with me. It does what I need it to do. I know the SE doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me.

Maybe Apple is working on another small device with some or most of the latest tech? That would be nice. Maybe someone else will make a small device. If not, I'll go back to a flip phone.

Just last week I read how some manufacturers are working on foldable screens. Maybe that is the future?

I'm not sure that's true. The SE seemed successful enough when it was released. Despite the fact that many people didn't necessarily ever find out about its existence – plenty of people I've talked to never knew the 5s form factor was updated with modern internals. They just assumed it was an old phone because it looked the same as the 5s. All Apple has to do is offer a truly modern phone in a smaller form factor and price it a little higher. I'm not convinced the demand wouldn't be there.

Apple experimented in growing markets like China and India, where Apple made and sold iPhone 6 at a similar price as iPhone SE (which is based on newer 6S). iPhone 6 sold more than SE.

I fully sympathize with you though. Design preference aside, it is often not easy to use XS with one hand (let alone iPhone 8). I've since learned to replace smaller phone with an Apple Watch, but Apple Watch is not as multifunctional as smaller phone.

Maybe the problem is they were not using the latest tech? When the SE was released it used the same processor as the top of the line phone. A year later the SE got a storage upgrade, but the processor was not updated. That made the SE less desirable. Most people don't want to buy old tech.

I bet if Apple made an SE sized phone with the latest processor in it it would sell.

Best comment I've read on MR in awhile. 100% true and sad. Although there is always time for Legend of Zelda...always.

You don’t think the worlds most valuable company can do that market research? Some like small screens, but out of the 3 people I knew who didn’t want an iPhones 6 at launch because it was bigger, one is using a SE and is bummed and the others are using the 7+ and 8+ they realized they liked the bigger screen, and they wanted an even bigger screen after that, as do the majority.

(And the person who uses an SE used a iPhone 6 just fine for years, and they’ll go back to using an iPhone 8 for years when they’re forced to upgrade, the SE just made it possible for them to give Apple less money, not good business)

There are plenty of smaller Android phones.

What good small android phones comparable in size to the SE? Sony Xperia compact line (they advertise “for those who want the best, not the largest) And for years has been considered a tiny android has a 4.6’ display and is as large as an iPhone 6/7/8.

No premium android manufacturer makes a good phone the size of the SE anymore. The iPhone 8 size is now what is considered “small”. You can always find 4’ screen Androids for $20-$100 at the grocery store, It’s not gonna be a good experience.

I love the iphone SE.
The battery life is amazing, it's so easy to use and to hold, it's super fast, the screen size is perfect, it looks cute and it just works. It even has a headphone jack.

There's absolutely nothing more appealing / practical or useful about having a larger screen than 4 inches for a smartphone.
I don't want or need some kind of tablet device bulging out of my pocket, I just want this. Totally efficient and functional.

This is the perfect iphone and Apple just killed it.

[IMO, Rant Over etc..]

Well i hear a iphone XE is in the works, at 4.9 or 5.0 inches....If the rumor is correct it could come as soon as next launch if not 2020

Me thinks they only need 3 sizes. 4.5” 5.5” 6.5” all X style with notch.

That should satisfy all.

You realize they said the iPhone 6 sold better than the SE? In emerging markets Apple sold the 6 at a similar price to the SE, a device with an older processor less ram and a much worse camera, it sold better because it had a bigger screen, people chose older tech with a bigger screen over new tech with a small screen at a similar price.

iPhone 6 is even more outdated than SE. And while 4" loyalists may replace their beloved SE with spec bumped SE2 when their current phone dies, I doubt majority of those with a perfectly functional SE would be compelled to upgrade to SE2, reducing the market appeal even further.

iPhone SE looks more outdated than iPhone 6, which can be mistaken for more expensive iPhone 8. In other words, it can be a status symbol in countries where the gap between those "who have" and "have not" is large. Superficial maybe but to many, this is a real factor.

What if Apple replaces it with X-style design, say, 5.5" XR Mini with the same screen real estate as iPhone XS, just as XR has the same screen real estate as XS Max?

According to my quick calculations, 5.5" XR Mini would be roughly 20% larger than iPhone SE (79% screen to body ratio of XR), but that's still an improvement over 30% larger footprint of iPhone 8.

Time to let go of your blue blanket. The days of carrying it everywhere are over.

Don't buy any more Apple iPhones. I also am on the SE and will not purchase a larger phone, even if this one stops working. Tim Crook thinks ALL people are sheep and that he knows whats best for the consumer. He's no Steve Jobs and his vision for Apple is worse than the vision for his face (since he wears glasses). He's an idiot and is ruining Apple. There will be a huge celebration once he is ousted. The date will become a yearly holiday that will be observed by all Apple consumers and remembered forever.

See, I actually agree with this.
And using the SE (just as with any other iphone) I book tickets, organise journeys, navigate, take photos, check up facts online, write emails, check the weather, make payments etc. etc. Everything is quick, easy and painless.

But I still don't see the need for a big phone, unless you want it for some kind of immersive entertainment device, playing games, watching movies, editing videos etc.
Zillions of people seemingly want more of this in their lives, but I don't - I just want the amazing technology without it in my face.
(yeah that's the definition of a minority I guess)
There are plenty of uses for the phone other than watching Youtube videos and playing Angry Birds. Just because you can't see how someone can utilize a bigger screen for daily tasks, doesn't matter. I don't play video games or watch videos on my phone. It's not an entertainment device for me. I like the bigger screen because it delivers more content, quicker, and bigger, so I can accomplish the tasks I need to with ease.

When I write an email, I've got much more space to type and review it on my X before I need to scroll. When I'm researching something on Wikipedia, there's more information provided to me at a quick glance. Writing emails, taking photos, reviewing accounts, and just general browsing/looking something up are all made better for me on a bigger screen. Everyone has their preference and that's okay. I totally understand why someone would want a small screen and vice versa. It's not that complex to figure out why.

When that SE becomes obselete in a couple of years, you're going to be hard pressed to find any phone that matches it in quality. Look at the 4" phones on the market right now, they're absolutely terrible. And all of the alternatives to Apple, are big screen Android phones. Remember, Samsung/Google/HTC, etc all came to the market first with the bigger screens.

You have no way of knowing whether it was successful because of form factor or price. From talking to the few Apple store employees I've asked about it, most people bought it for their kids because of price. They even tried to talk me into one instead of an iPod Touch saying a lot of people bought them and just didn't put a SIM card in it.

Hardly proof of a great demand. Outside of this forum I've never even seen one. If people want them so bad why aren't they around?

This is niche sH*T. Geek stuff. Like me refusing to drive an automatic car. I don't think I'm wrong but I don't tell everyone else they're wrong. I have common sense enough to know manual tranmissions are a niche market.

This thread is seriously lacking in reality.

When the SE came out, it had the same specs as the current flagship iPhone of the time, but cost only $399. I am sure it didn't have as high of a margin as the rest of the lineup. I was kinda surprised Apple even did it. They would probably need to price it higher if they updated it to current specs. Just don't see it.

Have been many threads about the demise of SE :(
I think it will resurrect in another form, X Mini will come. Have faith

Never say never. We simply don't know where the market will be a few years from now.

Some technologies, despite being outdated, are still utilized years later when manufacturers realize they were practical and demanded by a significant amount of people.

Don't believe me? - Classic example: manual transmission in cars. It's ancient. Archaic, in the automotive industry. Automatic cars took over the world. But guess what? - The most prominent sports car manufacturers started offering cars with a manual transmission again! Porsche discontinued it on the GT3, only to bring it back due to demand. BMW discontinued it on the E60 M5, only to bring it back the next year in North America. An overwhelming amount of Porsche and BMW owners still buy automatics (SMG, DCT, etc.), but there are diehard manual transmission enthusiats who refuse to go that route. The demand is small, but it's still there. So they continue to offer manual transmission cars, despite the fact that all of the automatic cars are much faster. Nothing can replace clutch engagement and the fun factor that comes with it.

If enough people bitch and whine about Apple phones getting too big and sales are lost for that reason, why on earth wouldn't Apple update a smaller phone? - I am very confident that they will.

Take me, for example. I love the iPhone SE. I have three options:

1. Buy the latest smallest iPhone Xs at $1k. (which I haven't done and won't do)
2. Buy any of the older smaller models like the 7/8 (which I won't do)
3. Stick with my SE for another several years

So, if Apple doesn't release an updated SE-like phone, they will earn $0 from me in the next few years, until my SE craps out and they force me to upgrade to a larger phone. Had they released an updated SE-sized phone, I would be all over it and likely pay up to $800 for it, no joke.

Speak for yourself about nothing more appealing, practical, or more useful. And who’s we? I don’t need to convince Apple on nothing let alone a useless 4 inch iPhone.

I'm pretty sure he was speaking for himself...notice all the times he used the word. “I” in his sentences.

ETA: I noticed they also didn’t offer any new 4.7 inch phones either.
