I had an issue with my launch day base iPhone 16 (extreme colour shift on the slightest angle shift), so this is nothing new. I exchanged it and the second phone had a very good screen.

I am in the 7th-14th Oct delivery slot for my base iPhone 17 order. Side story: I don't normally update every year - my last phone was an 12 mini - but my wife needs a new phone to replace her iPhone SE. I offered to buy her the iPhone Air or base 17, but she said no, so she will inherit my 16 :D

Back to screen issues. My theory, which is purely subjective and lacks any scientific evidence, is that these issues might affect the first batch of iPhones more and therefore waiting for a later batch could increase your chances of receiving a better screen. In reality, this is probably just my way of hoping I get a good screen on the first iPhone 17 that I receive.

Here’s my SO awful Air GVC panel. TT on.

I have a 14 Pro Max and when I got the 17 Pro Max, one of the first things I noticed is how much brighter the 14 Pro Max was, but only at lower levels. Once I get the two phones to 45%, they look pretty much the same. And of course the 17 PM does show a higher peak brightness in sunlight. The 14 PM definitely has better brightness at lower percentage levels. I always kept the 14 PM at around 30% unless I was outside. But 30% on the 17 PM is quite dim. So I keep it at 45%.
Reference your first sentence. Isn’t that the case with any new model. ? Folks always seem to complain about how dimmer the new iPhone is compared to their previous model. Probably break in period ?

I don't think so. It should be brighter out of the box.

I have no idea. This is only my second iPhone.

That was pretty much like my original screen, warm and dull with a very obvious green tint off axis.
The power of suggestion I guess. It’s more uniform than any of the pictures posted here. No green tint at all in that picture. Warm because TT was on. No dullness, just very low brightness. No pinkish tones like your beloved Samsungs.

Just because you are happy with your screen, doesn't mean people are happy with their screens, or are imagining severe green tint issues at viewing angles. As much as some think nothing is even showing up in pictures, which it is, I can assure you its worse in person.

Didn't say it wasn't uniform, just looks warm and dull, but you have explained why. I was referencing my tint, not yours in the pic.

A G9N in an Air!?!?! That's a first!
Based on what I’d read here, I was surprised when I saw that in the iodevicetree thing.

Fwiw, her display is warmer than mine. I’ve got a GVC and her display with True Tone off is similar to my display with True Tone on. Like I said earlier, both displays are really good, and photos/videos/HDR content look identical between the two.

Wonder how the G9Q comes in the mythical hierarchy.

I believe the 3rd digit is not a grade but something like a production line. The quality grading people have come up with is the electronics equivalent of astrology. The truth is each probably has about the same range and distribution of display characteristics.

Still, some people find horoscopes a very fun hobby and who am I to judge!

So you're saying that G9Q is the best then, nice!

No, I’m saying

October ignites new, passionate beginnings for you, G9Q. The Ace of Cups represents fresh feelings, romance, or spiritual insight. So if you’ve been looking for love or a relationship, now might be the exact right time to take the leap towards someone you’re interested in.

Mercury in G9Q on the 6th can help you uncover emotional truths, while the Full Moon in GVC highlights shared resources and intimate dynamics. This month is about embracing emotional authenticity and opening your heart to new experiences.

Not sure my wife would be happy with that horoscope!

This is an absolutely brilliant post, bravo!

Wouldn’t it be fun to let people judge screens like a wine tasting session? The awe when people discover they thought the LG was a Samsung screen would be hilarious.

Remember launch day folks, on October 3rd, start an online return on your order and it will extend your return date 2 weeks. (By giving you 2 weeks to ship) While you wait for your new iphone to come in
