This is a pretty good shot of the phones at the store.

I started with a 17 Pro Max. Its just too heavy, and I wasn't happy with the green screen and returned it (GH3) I transferred the 17 Pro Max to an Air and have used it for a few days. (Did not verify Screen) Its a great design. I really struggle still with keeping it. It has a green tint at certain angles but not as much as the 17 Pro Max.

I am using a 17 Pro right now, and it has zero tint issues, and really doesn't change at all at any angle other than getting slightly more dim ( I have not verified what screen and am not going to as it looks fine) I miss the weight of the Air, but since I like a smaller phone, the screen size is probably a better fit than the Air overall.

In the store at every station, this is what it looked like. The 17 Pro in all cases has a more consistent screen, and did not change at any angle. The 17 Pro Max gets very green from the side and especially when tipped forward. The 17 is a little green all over the entire screen and gets worse at an angle. The Air in this picture, was the most uniform of all the set ups at the store, and a little better than the Air I currently have.

I will say the Air and Pro Max with the greenish screen maybe.... has slightly more crisp contrast with black text, probably since with the greenish tint the Pro is a bit warmer in general. There could be some preference there for some people. For me the problem was having half the screen green and the other half not green - didn't like that.

My eyes say the 17 and 17 pro max as the worst at angles and I think the picture supports that, and it was worse in person. The 17 pro in all cases had the least amount of change at any angle. The Air has some slight variation, but was still a little green tilted forward but it was more uniform rather than focused at the bottom like the Pro Max. The Air also does not seem to change as much in landscape mode as the Pro Max. I have a higher rez image if anyone wants it.

From my limited sample size of a Pro, Pro Max, 2 Airs and a couple of base 17s at Best Buy, my results were largely the same. The only one that had a flawless looking screen was the Pro. All of the other ones had it to some degree or another and the Airs were by far the worst.

Currently going through AppleCare Express Replacement to ‘exchange’ my 17PM. Would have had to reportedly wait until the end of October for a replacement if I wanted to go the official exchange route. Waiting on a date for AppleCare replacement.

Let me know how long this is. I just EP my dads 15 Pro and it was 2 days. Crazy fast

I ended up returning my base 17 with GVC. The green tint was so bright and prominent when just moving the phone slightly vertical. Anything greater than a 70° angle and it would immediately pop up. It’s a shame because straight on it was a very clean looking display. I also noticed the viewing angle side to side was not as good as the 13 I’m typing this on. If my 13 didn’t have a crack at the bottom I would keep it for another several years. For now I’m holding on to it till restocks happen and then I’ll revisit the issue.

My ordeal is over.

Launch day blue 1TB 17PM GVC screen horrible green shift.

A week later, got another one. GH3 screen. Green shift is better, it happens at steeper angles than the GVC, like 5-10 degrees more rotation before bottom of screen turns forest green. For example, when tilted to same angle, the bottom 1/3rd of the GVC screen has severely shifted green, whereas only the bottom 1/5th of the GH3 has shifted. The top also dimmed less when top of screen is tilted away. However, screen was a little dingy compared to GVC. I was going to keep it anyway.

Went to a different Apple Store from where I got the first two phones to return the GVC phone. Checked out all the display models they had. All except one of the Pro models looked good, no green shift, just typical dimming or neutral gray shift when screen when is tilted, like my 16PM GH3 screen. All the Airs looked bad. All except just one PM looked varying degrees of bad, I was suprised to find a unicorn.

When talking to the employee about why I was returning, he said I could exchange it no problem and return it if it still looks green. So I went ahead and got a third PM.

Got home, turned it on. Instantly knew it was good. No green shift whatsoever. Setting it up now.

No idea which screen is it, but it's absoultely perfect and a keeper. I'll edit post if I run the diagnostics to find out.

Left is 17PM GH3. Right is new 17PM, haven't looked up code yet. Imagine my first GVC which I already returned, the green would be half way up the screen at this same angle. Horrible.
For completeness, I finally ran the diagnostics and the screen on my keeper 17PM on the right is G9N. I don't see any pink, yellow, or unevenness. It's as good as my 16PM with GH3.

Doesn't that cost $100?

I just swapped my 17 PM for a 17 Pro. The PM had a GH3 and green tinting issues.

Surprisingly, this 17 Pro’s display serial starts with “J5V”. I saw on a Reddit thread that it might be BOE.

The screen is slightly warmer than my G9N 15 PM, uniformity is excellent, and no green tinting.

In which country did you buy the iPhone?

Has anyone seen or received a base 17 using a Samsung g9n? Despite that supplier chart posted earlier in the thread suggesting panel share of 25% Samsung / 15% LG / 60% BOE (china only) for the 17, I have hardly seen any reports of the Samsung being used.

The supplier chart mentioned here is taken from someone’s arse.
There are no trustworthy sources on this for iPhone 17 lineup

Why this screen lottery still have not made it to the usual alarmist news sites?
I am not sure. In some cases its pretty bad in my opinion too. In some cases its beyond tech OCD.

Maybe most people accept whatever apple gives them with trust.

Maybe most people don't care? What you don't know won't hurt you as much since you don't know what you're missing?

Maybe Apple has a huge propaganda machine working over time - I doubt it.

Maybe the industry has accepted some of the trade offs for OLED? Considering that some panels are objectively better and not just preference, I'm inclined to believe most people don't know what they are missing between a uniform screen, and something that's less consistent with color and viewing angles?

I’ve noticed even on the 26.1 beta when you take the phone out of your pocket outside it takes forever for auto brightness to get to an acceptable brightness level - Same for True Tone - very slow response.

If memory serves, this issue afflicts all new iPhones for a while until they fix it in the firmware.

I have another G9N 17 Pro now which is pretty good - Uniform, with a slight blue tint off axis. Only issue is it’s warmer than my 15 Pro Max and has the associated slightly less clear text and definition you get with that.
