I’ve said this in other threads but this is probably the best place for it; I’m having a really hard time trying to decide between two possible ‘ultimate’ setups:
  • iPad Pro 11” + 16” MBP + 24” 4K Monitor
  • (iPad Mini) + iPad Pro 12.9” + 24” iMac
The XDR display of the new 12.9“ Pro is calling my name, but I am a little turned off by the weight increase. I love the expansive screen size of the 12.9“, but had gotten used to the idea of the increased portability of the 11”. The 11” is the ‘Goldilocks iPad’ but that may just mean that as a hybrid you make compromises on both ends - not portable enough to be a mini and not big enough to be full-sized… Sort of like a hybrid bicycle, not as good on the road and not as good on the trails, but it can do everything fairly well…

The iMac has captured my heart completely but I know the MBPs later this year are going to be incredible. Also, I just had it confirmed that I’ll be taking a one year business trip to Hawaii and that second setup with the iMac isn’t going to pack up quite as nicely.

What to do, what to do…

iPad 11" and Mac Mini M1 with 27" 4K, which is my setup since I rarely use my 1st gen 12.9" :)

If I'll just be using the 12.9" for mostly streaming, some general web surfing, and some light gameplay would the 16 GB of RAM be a waste of money? This would be my first M1 device so I'm trying to decide if it would be worth to jump to 16 GB as opposed to 8 GB.

The 8GB is more than any iPad has previously had. I don't see a need for 16GB for the uses you mention. I'm still using a 9.7" Pro with A9X; it's fine for streaming and web surfing. Probably wouldn't handle contemporary games gracefully. You also have to go with 1TB to get the 16GB of ram. I believe the US price is $1799 for the wifi only version. And do you really need 1TB? Seems complete overkill for the vast majority of iPad users. Especially when you can use external storage and/or cloud based storage. I've got several movies and television series downloaded on my iPad and am using < 128GB.

This is a Apple enthusiast website.. we all know what’s the best upgrade. And people on this site... Is going to go that route

Well, I don't think it's so much being the best upgrade but rather the "Ooh, shiny!" factor of Mini-LED XDR. ?

Me, I just need a 12.9 upgrade more than 10.9/11 at the moment for: 1TB storage and Logitech Crayon support. With mouse support, I'm using the 12.9 docked (on K780 keyboard) at the office everyday so FaceID would be more convenient now.

On the Pro 11, FaceID only and lack of TouchID is a major con since I carry that iPad around (well, the 10.5). With the current face mask requirement, authentication with TouchID is just more convenient.

If I were in your position I would get the first set up. I love having a fast and portable notebook on the go. Personally I'm holding onto my 2018 Intel MBP for a couple more years before moving on. They depreciated much faster than other Macs so I really have nothing to lose at this point. Plus for video editing it still bests my M1 Mini because it has the dGPU.

Personally I'm ordering the 12.9. Life is short, the screen is too tempting and I know I would get some sort of FOMO if I didn't at least try the 12.9. (Coming from a 10.5 Pro).

11 here. Last IPP I got was 12.9 and it’s a bit larger than I’d like.. plus it annoys me that I can’t edit an excel document in Dropbox without paying to license excel.

Yes. A complete waste imo. I use my 2018 iPad Pro for your use and it has 4GB ram. Don't pay an extra £500-600 just for 8GB ram that no application on the iPad will utilise.

This 5th gen will be my third 12.9 and second equipped with LTE. I haven't regretted going to the 12.9 as the expansive canvas is just a pleasure to use. Looking forward to seeing that mini-LED display... :D I'm going to keep my old 12.9 here on the desk as it's a great device to turn around to from my PC and bang out a message, check something or whatever.

Is mini led that big a deal for you in what you are choosing?
The mini LED and M1 processor were the only reasons why I opted for a new iPad and choosing the 12.9.

I may regret the purchase in some respects simply because the iPad is so large. I tried a 12" previously but I preferred the 10.5 but given what I'm paying for a tablet, I might as well get one with a gorgeous screen
