I'm one of those who've been super hyped about new iPP 12.9" with XDR on it, and of course placed an order on day 1 of pre-order with no doubt. I'm upgrading from 2018 iPP 11", btw. The problem is, I do think portability is important and was overlooking it as I was just excited with new tech being introduced at the moment. Would 12.9" be too much for someone who frequently holds iPad for note taking? I'd like to hear what others think.
I went to BesTBuy to hold the 12.9” in hand vs the 11” and the 11” feels like a 7” chick let vs holding the bignormous 12.9”
But with an M1 chip and 80% in bed browsing duty. The times I’m actually “holding” the iPad Pro are few.

And I just gotta have 12.9” that XDR Display is killer plus it will prevent me from buying a full blow Laptop so that’s a $1,000 - $2,000 savings.

I’ve been debating this for some time and wasn’t sure which way to go this year. I’d like to consolidate and have one iPad. I currently have the iPP 10.5 and 12.9” 2018. I thought that the 11” would be more portable and might therefore be the best size. But I’ve realised that I use the 12.9” almost all of the time now and that the 10.5” feels a bit on the small side. I’m not sure if I’d adjust again to the smaller size and I possibly would, but I also thought that I’d likely miss the bigger size. It seems that the 12.9” now feels like the normal iPad size and the 10.5 now feels more like a mini. So I’ve adjusted. I’ve ordered the 12.9” this time and I still wonder if I should have gone with 11” too, but then I go back to thinking I’d miss the 12.9” if I didn’t get it and I find the 12.9” fine while holding and using on the couch, bed, table or car, etc.
Maybe keep your order and give it a try? That might be better than cancelling and always wondering?

So true. People are different. The only way to know which works best for you is to try.

For me, I wouldn't want to consolidate. I'd miss both sizes too much.

I personally can deal with the size and weight of the 12.9 for the added benefits it comes with like the larger screen real estate and the new XDR display. I just had an Air 4 a couple of months ago and while I thought the size was great, I am itching to get back to the 12.9 again because I honestly miss it. If say the XDR display was on both the 11 and 12.9 that might have made it a tougher choice, but my choice was clear all along.

Second guessing our decisions is easy, especially when there are such differing opinions.

With regard to note taking, I think using a 12.9 for this purpose is doable. You may find it easier than the 11 depending on the size of your hands and how you hold or prop it up.

The 11" is a tablet. The 12.9" is ideally a touch enabled laptop (with Magic Keyboard). I have both and that's how I use them.

11" with Cellular goes with me when I am out and about. I'll get a new M1 version next month.

The 12.9" rests in it's ridiculously heavy Magic Keyboard case. It's heavier than a MBP and gains another 40grams with the new XDR screen. I won't upgrade that one.

Yeah, I internally debate this topic perpetually. Funny how much turmoil this one topic puts many of us in… I have both on order and intended to cancel one before they shipped, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to.

For me it all comes down to whether I will be able to forego the upcoming MBPs or not. If I get one of those then I think it would be better to pair that with an 11”, but if I can resist that and decide to use my iPad as my primary mobile computer - for both laptop and tablet uses - then I’ll go for the 12.9”. Hopefully the MBPs are announced at WWDC so I’ll be able to make my decision once and for all before my return period ends.

In your case I would say that the 12.9” is a little big and heavy if you’re doing a lot of note-taking while holding it in one hand. It’s wonderful for note-taking if it’s sitting flat on a table/desk, though. I would recommend still letting it come so you can test it out for a few days.

What we think doesn’t matter...you MUST go to an Apple store and hold them in your hands!

What one person likes may not be what you like, and we don’t know your use cases...

thank you for your insights people! i can't let go of portability, i guess i was just blindfolded by the new screen which won't make that much of difference to me considering my usage (barely consuming media...)
maybe Apple should upgrade 11" to somewhere between 11.5" and 12" lol

The iPad Pro is where I want a foldable display over a phone. Gave the 12.9 to family and use the 11.
I use the 12.9 for well over a year and 11, I’ve owned that for a year as well. BUT there are times I want a 12.9 for note taking and research. I just got an m1 mba for portable working and I just can’t justify the 12.9. I already have a 16in mbp so it’s getting kinda ridiculous personally to get the 12.9 iPad.

For me, the XDR was the deciding factor, my current iPad works fine, though it has white spots, and I need a new battery, but those are not really show stopping reasons. In the end, I'm really looking forward to the M1 processor (that I don't need) and the mini-led display.

Is mini led that big a deal for you in what you are choosing?
I would say that that it's a big deal for me. I mean I've been waiting on getting a Pro until this iteration and was looking forward to something more than just the CPU boost, which is great, too. I have an iPad Air 2 and I've been using a stylus to try and gear up for the 12.9 with the pencil...I'm trying to go all in with note taking and creative work with it. I think the bigger canvas will be worth it. They are so obscenely thin, too, which helps. I snagged a magic keyboard, too, which I'll leave at the office if it seems to bulky.
