Btw what’s availability Like on iPads when they’re revealed? I’ve never bought one early. Plenty of stock if I decide to wait a few days for reviews or is it like an iPhone launch where you need your finger on the trigger during the keynote.

How about accessories like the keyboard pencil and leather cases? Also typically released at the same time? I’ve got a very narrow window oct 10 to 20 and if I can’t get it shipped to me during that time I’m SOL til March.
Depends on configuration. I got the Pro 12.9 512GB LTE last year and there was a bit of a wait (3-4 weeks?). Base storage wi-fi should be plentiful. Iirc though, there was less launch stock available for 12.9. Yes, there's greater demand for 10.5, no doubt, but launch stock for 10.5 seemed more or less sufficient to meet the demand. I remember checking stock for pick-up at Apple Store and the 10.5 seemed readily available throughout release month.

Note, be prepared for the chance the new iPads won't be released until November.

12.9 - I love it... went from the 9.7 to the 12.9 because of drawing. Did not like having to zoom in and out so often. It will be nice if it is a bit smaller (not screen size) - to be more portable. My decision is whether I go with cellular.... I have an asus cellular tablet that is coming out of contract soon... :)

I’m seeing people saying the 12.9” is heavy or unwieldy - again we don’t know if the 3rd gen will address either of those ...
Sure, weight can be remedied. However, unless the new iPads are somehow foldable, there's only so much you can do in terms of dimensions.

I have a 12.9 so I know how big the display portion is. Even if Apple completely got rid of the bezels, it would still be too big for my purses.

At the moment i am leaning toward the following
  • iPad Pro 11", 256 GB WiFi
  • Smart Keyboard
  • Lightning to USB 3 camera adapter
  • Anker USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

Well, I have had the first two generations of 12.9, and though I loved them, and balked at those who claimed they were too big to be portable, I ultimately decided they were just too big to be portable. I sold my 2nd generation in the spring, but didn't want to buy anything because I knew there would be more coming, so I grabbed a 2018 iPad to use in the meantime.

I have a pretty sweet setup with my iPad on a nice little adjustable stand and a cheap (iMac-like) keyboard, and it has been awesome! It's there on my desk and typing is nice on the keyboard, but I can grab it and throw it in my purse when I leave.

So, I guess all that babbling is to say, I had planning to go to a 10.5 (or equivalent), but now I'm not sure I'm going to get a pro again at all.

The biggest complaint I have with the 12.9” is that in many glove boxes it just doesn’t fit which is a handy thing to be able to do when traveling and wanting to keep it out of sight when its not with me - if they do cut the bezels its possible it gets down to that size. At the same time I’d love for them to introduce a 15” or larger iPad that is designed to not be portable at all - I am a dual iPad Pro owner and have the 10.5 as well and will probably hold off upgrading because I’d like to have both iPads on the same gen and that makes it around a $2,000 proposition for upgrades minus whatever resell value I’d get.

For historical value I may want to keep one or both Pros as they are the final design in this traditional form factor since more or less the iPad 2.

If they are changing from 10.5 to 11, I would expect the 12.9 to change also, otherwise they would be too close in size.

I originally got the 12.9 as I wanted the largest iOS size for game development, to go with having the smallest size. If everything looks right at both ends of the scale, it should be fine in-between.

Because of this I was willing to overlook a device that felt too big for other use as I couldn't also afford another new iPad (my iPad 4 is still used for dev testing), but now I have got used to it and it feels fine around the house where I mostly use it. Only seems a bit odd when switching between 12.9" iPad and my 4" iPhone SE.

Although if I wanted an iPad just as an end user, I would probably choose the standard 9.7" iPad for price reasons, but would envy the smaller Pro.

Weight and physical size is the main reason I have opted out of the 12.9". I've wanted one ever since they launched though.

If they can get these down then I'm definetely considering upgrading. I don't really see how 2.4" of screen requires almost double the weight.

What I’ve always found interesting about the weight of the 12.9”, is that it’s actually a few grams less than the weight of the original iPad (for the cellular version anyway). Kind of crazy to think how far we’ve come for the 9.7” and 10.5” from the original (~2/3 the weight of the original).

Definitely 11 since I mostly use the iPad for watching movies on the plane, ebooks and playing games. 12.9 is way too big and heavy for my needs.

I bought the 12.9" at the Apple Store on launch day, June 13th 2017. I forget what the online store stock was, I remember the stock becoming very limited in late June / July (perhaps due to the SSD drive inside (wasn't there a flash drive shortage which eventually bumped the prices? someone please correct me).

The accessories, I know some were unavailable for a week or two just after they launched, but again, folks who keep track of this can give you a better idea.

I am just spit-balling most of this post, but with the potential changes to the iPPs (Face ID, smaller bezels etc.) they may sell out faster.

Impossible to say.

Hope they will launch when you want them to.

As for me, I am still waiting on a new Mini.

Otherwise, not buying another iPP unless it's on sale. Though I'd wager I'd buy the smaller one if and when I ever do.

I found the best application for my usage with the 12.9 iPad is stationary only. It’s just too uncomfortable to hold with the weight and size for two-handed use, and then add a case to it, makes it even thicker. I find it best to be like a desktop solution with a keyboard. Great iPad by all means, but not always practical for mobility depending one’s comfort level.

I switched from 10.5 to 12.9 last month. I always thought the 12.9 would be too big, but I was wrong. I love the size of the display—now that I don’t own a MacBook it’s a perfect fit for my iPhone > iPad > iMac setup—and I don’t think I’d ever go back to the smaller size.

Are we sure the next larger model will be 12.9 and not a 13” display? I’m not saying it needs to be bigger, but depending on how much they trim down the bezels, they could reduce the overall size of the device and still make the display bigger.

Exactly. It just feels pretty big and unwieldy. When I do testing at work on iPad Pro 12.9", it's the one w/iOS 11 on it and it's in a cheap case I bought (mainly for protection when I take it hook to do testing/dogfooding our app/to experience a bigger iPad). That cheap case adds a lot to the bulk and weight to an already unwieldy iPad.

For iPad Pro 12.9" naked w/no case (at work, I have ones with iOS 9, 10 and 12 beta on them), they somehow, because of its thinness, unwieldiness and large amount of glass feel like I might easily break it vs. say a mini 2 or original Air.

I intentionally do a lot of testing on iPad mini 2 since it (and the Air) are least amount of RAM iPads and slowest iPads that can run iOS 11 and 12.

Trading in my iPad 3, iPad Mini, iPad Air 2 (LTE), and my 10.5" iPad Pro. I can probably make more selling the iPad Pro, but I'm too lazy. It comes out to ~$700, so assuming the prices stay the same, I should be able to snag an iPad Pro from B&H for $100 net. I do use my iPad Pro for school, but I'll use my 12.9" as a temporary device until then I guess.

You need an option for "can't decide". For me, it's going to depend on two things: price and size. I have NEVER bought the larger Pro, but if they're shrinking everything down where there's no bezel, I could easily be tempted. I feel like a 12.9" iPad Pro with virtually no bezels would be only a little bigger than the current form factor 10.5" iPad Pro. Obviously there will still be a noticeable difference in size, but it wouldn't be nearly as dramatic and could make the 12.9" model much easier to use in tablet mode. (aka when I'm in bed reading or watching video)

I'm in wait and see mode. I have always gone with the smaller model for portability and something tells me I will be doing that again this time.
Yes, let’s see if they use bezelless to reduce size instead of increase.

Definitely 12.9".

iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard for me has been my laptop replacement for what I need in my daily use (media consumption, light word processing, more landscape for running 2 apps split screen, etc.). It can't do everything a laptop can do (and don't let anyone tell you otherwise), but for the few things it can't do for me, those things can wait until I get home.

If I didn't use it as a laptop replacement, I would definitely get the 11". In some cases, I wish the 12.9" was smaller.

11”, but I’m beginning to think it’s not releasing any time soon which is a bummer.

Haven't been following closely, but will there be a chance for a ram bump? Say 6gb of ram for one or both of them?

I was going to get the 11” when it is released, but I figure Apple will raise the price if they go face-ID and smaller bezels. So instead, I picked up a 10.5” 256GB cellular for 1/2 the cost of new and got a Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil thrown in for free.

Smart move. It’s a beast of a machine. We’ve almost reached peak tech with the HW now we need OS and app improvements. This’ll easily last you a couple of years and then you can upgrade to a gen 2 bezelless.

That’s a pretty damn good deal..even if the new pros are out in a few weeks be hard for you to beat that deal anywhere.
