The renders showed them looking similar.
Either way, the new 12.9" looks to be a lot lot lot smaller, and heading towards the current (not new) 10.5" iPad. Having owned the gen 1 12.9" for 2.5 years, there is no going back to a smaller size. The larger screen is fantastic for watching videos and browsing the web.

There was one frequently-republished comparison picture that was misleading because it was not to scale.
Going by the “leaked” dimensions of the new design, the new 12.9 will be about an inch shorter (in portrait mode) and a few millimeters narrower than the current 12.9. The new 11 will be a few millimeters shorter and a few millimeters wider than the existing 10.5, making it similar in overall size to the current 10.5. So the new 12.9 would still be quite a bit bigger than the existing 10.5, but the gap will have narrowed.

Still debating on upgrading from my Air 2 (which still rocks for day to day stuff but a little slow for gaming and the battery is worn after 4 years) but weight would be a big deciding factor in which size. I had the 1st gen iPad which was about 1.5 pound which for holding for long periods of time was a smidge too heavy but the 1 pound Air 2 seemed just right so if the 13 incher is 1.5 pound I think I'd go for the 11 incher but if they managed to get the weight down to 1.25 or less I'd seriously consider it.

Ah ok, thank you. Still think I’ll go for the larger one. Really enjoy having such a large screen, especially as i rarely take it out and about.

This will be a dilemma for me this year. I've had the 12.9" Pro and currently have the 10.5 but since getting a 12" MacBook a few months ago I don't use my 10.5 that much. I like the idea of the bigger iPad but think it'll be too similar to this MacBook that I'm writing this on and it's much easier to write on than an iPad. So I don't know what I'll do. If the smaller iPad (11"?) looks like a marked improvement to my 10.5 (which it undoubtably will be) I might sell my 10.5 and upgrade to that.

This seems to be the dilemma a lot of people are having with the new iPad pros. Many who normally would go with the 10.5” are now giving the 12.9” a second look because of the slimmer bezels & smaller size. And many who went with the 12.9” last time instead of the 10.5”, are giving the upcoming 11” a look because of the slightly bigger screen. Very interesting.

Kind of going back and forth on this one. The original 12.9 was too big and heavy, but if it’s closer in overall dimensions and weight to the 10.5, I may go for that. Can’t go wrong with extra screen real estate if it doesn’t add size and weight.

I’ll probably go with the bigger one, I have the iPad Pro 12.9 right now and enjoy it so I’m sure I’d stick with that size.

12.9” Cellular, probably 256GB unless it’s 128/512/1024 in which case I’ll get 512GB.

For me it’s a matter of them slimming down the casing as well as making it thinner. This should result in a lighter device that isn’t so clunky to hold. I use my iPad more than my Mac now when I’m at home, though when you factor in work it’s still the Mac. I like that the big one can display full sized apps and has more room for artwork with toolbars around it when editing photos and drawing. However, I may be tempted by the 11” if it ends up having the same resolution as the 12.9” but at a higher PPI like an iPad Mini or something. We’ll see.

If you don’t use your 10.5 now, I’d think you probably still wouldn’t use a new generation iPad very much, no? I think you would need a significantly smaller device to give you a different enough experience from your MacBook in order for you to use both. I’d suggest the mini, but it’s pretty old. Perhaps the next smallest, a 9.7 iPad? Much much cheaper too. Or for some, a MacBook and a large iPhone are sufficient.
