At least Apple is somewhat predictable with their pre-orders. You can preorder the second it goes live and if you don't get a launch date (and it's a few weeks out or something), the day of launch, you have one more shot at in-store stock if you try on the app at 6am your local time for pick up in store.

I did that for the M1 (didn't buy) the morning of launch just to see if they had them in stock and I could've easily picked one up that day in multiple configurations.

Best Buy -- I dunno... they seem really sketchy on their orders, accidentally getting customers into a backorder status, no shipping updates, then going to "Delayed" status, etc. I would never try a Best Buy preorder or an Apple product if i wanted it on launch day, but I know a lot of people do since they have rewards points, credit, etc.

Mine finally shows shipped. My guess is that BB has no real idea what their inventory will be. They just take the orders and as a middle man make that order with apple. They really had no idea what the “real” market would be for 1 and 2 TB iPads so probably were very low on their pre game list and with the numerous reasons for supply delays fell behind rather quickly with Apple ensuring their direct supply chain first. My local BB even said they didn’t request any 1 or 2 TB to have onsite and in stock because they just didn’t think they had the market to sell them.

It really was a guessing game on how many, who and where there would be people willing to pay 2-3k for an ipad. I’m just happy to know mine is FINALLY on it’s way. My new dilemma is to decide if i want to trade in this Logitech combo keyboard/case for the magic keyboard… I’m on the fence. I really like the smaller footprint the magic keyboard offers but like the protection the logi case offers… ugh

i like the Keychron keyboards, I picked up the K2 version… I wish I had waited for the K3 low-profile keyboard. But it’s a the best keyboard I’ve owned. And there’s plenty of docks for the iPad you can choose from on Amazon. I plan on getting something much more versatile where I can move it up and down. Right now, the dock I have can only rotate horizontal and vertical.

Thanks! Definitely a relief to have it before June 7th.

But I disagree about pre-orders being pointless. Perhaps... you are targeting Best Buy when it comes to pre-orders. Because going through Apple, there would of been hardly no issues with getting as scheduled. But as I said before.. it all depends on what model someone were going for. If someone was going for 128/256gb WiFi only models... then anyone could pick that up at launch day.

I was going to go on this dialog about not blaming Best Buy and that Apple has to ship them the product, but come to think about it. Best Buy is to blame! I looked at my package that actually came from Apple... it was shipped out of China on 5/7, that Friday!

And if anything, they had to have the package by the 14th on Friday... they waited all this time to ship it on the 24th. That boggles my mind. So, yeah... these preorders were ready to go out and be delivered on launch date, Best Buy waited.

Well, I was just thinking about the way it all goes. There's still people who ordered from Apple who are not getting theirs til June. Mine is inbound at the same time others who ordered from BB weeks ago are about to receive theirs.

I've seen pretty much every single model go available for pickup at some point or other in this past week. After seeing the 1 TB go in and out of stock several times, I finally decided to claim one to hold onto until after the event.

It might have something to do with my location (New York), but its been an often occurrence that when different Apple products launch, if I keep an eye out, I'll see some pop up around release.

Yea I often wonder exactly how the back end ordering system actually works and tracks that stuff. I know I literally placed the pre-order about 5 mins after it went live and certainly sounds like that didn't really matter. Not that a few days either way is a big deal to me, but I would find how it actually works on the back end interesting.

Yes, very tricky process. And every store (like Best Buy Vs Walmart) is probably different.

Another update for me. It is now in transit. It's actually coming from a store not far away. As hard as it will be to not open, I will let it sit til after the event so that I will not end up in a race as soon as they announce something jaw-dropping. I may take this opportunity to grab a 256 GB as well because I see those are available.

If Apple doesn't announce something amazing (which would blow my mind because why in the hell else would we have M1 and 16 GB of RAM?), the 1 TB is going back. I'm still due for an upgrade, coming from a 2016 iPad Pro that has served me very well for nearly 5 years, so I will grab the 256 GB.

Only reason those people who ordered from Apple has to wait is due to the timing they placed their order.

Still haven’t opened mine, but that’s dependent on the sell of my 2018 iPP. However.. I’m kind of struggling whether to keep it at the moment.

Well, it just seems there’s no reason to make a change like this to keep everything the same. There’s no reason for me to keep this unless they’ve got new apps to run on that RAM.

I was going to buy a 128 or 256. I’m coming from a 128 and I think I might have filled up a little more than half. That’s after downloading a bunch of stuff I don’t use. xCode and other pro apps like maybe Logic Pro would give me a reason for 16 GB of RAM and I’d use much more storage. 16 GB and 512 GB would have been the sweet spot but that’s not available.

Without that, I’d have all this RAM and all this storage I’m not using, so it would be like I’m just throwing away money.

If people weren’t buying stuff up I might’ve waited til after WWDC.

Update for me, my package is out for delivery.

I’ve been having issues with my screen randomly dimming. I thought it was due to auto-brightness, but I disabled that and it’s still doing it. I guess I’ll have to return it to Best Buy, but after talking to them they basically told me they have zero replacements so I can only get my money back and wait for stock to replenish. This is pretty crappy.

That’s odd. Not sure why it’s randomly dimming… but i tend to keep my iPad screen brightness low for longer battery. You tried rebooting?

Now to decide if I’m gonna grab the 256 now or just wait so I might not have to go through the trouble of sending anything back.

Returned the 128 SG w/cell tonight that I tried to cancel before it shipped. I looked afterwards and it showed up in inventory for in-store pickup, so hopefully someone was pleasantly surprised at my store tonight.

Yeah, I tried rebooting, hard reset, factory reset. Nothing worked. I’m sending it back at the UPS Store in the morning. I would drive to a Best Buy that has a Space Gray model in stock, but it’s around an hour and a half away and there’s only 1 of them. It’s risky to drive that far and then have someone swoop in and buy the only one they have before I get there.

Is it not allowing you to order the iPad online for in-store pickup?

Was that even an option if I was going to have to return/exchange it? Because I didn’t have another $1,100 just sitting around to order another one. If it was an option I feel pretty stupid right about now.

Ah, probably not an option.

I use credit card to pay and would've just let both charges float at the same time. With the wait time until statement cut-off date and grace period, the refund would always be processed before I need to pay off the statement balance anyway.

Does anyone know how long it takes for Best Buy to issue a refund and how long it takes to post to your account? Like an estimate? I know it’s not getting there until Wednesday, but I’d like some idea on when I can expect my refund so I can buy another 12.9” iPP to replace the one I sent back. I am getting antsy watching the stock dwindling down.

3-5 business days, could be longer depending on the bank. I got the refund back last Wednesday morning.

And as my Air is freaking out, -and more importantly there’s a now patch for Procreate- I am trying another M1 11”. Yes, Apple make me eat my words again.?

For U.S. 11” buyers, Microcenter currently is offering $70 off for certain WiFi and $20 off for certain Cellular 11” iPP configurations, so Best Buy just honored that discount for the Space Gray 11” 256 WiFi iPP, so that is a big reason reason why I am trying again so soon. Apple will not pricematch this over the phone.
