For those of us looking for a JBOD, the new Promise TB 2 device is a non starter.

True, although even if this supported JBOD, I'm not sure that's a good use for it given you're never going to exceed single drive speed in JBOD.

If you're doing JBOD with spinning disks, USB3 is a much more affordable and just as effective choice (like the Oyen Mobius for example). If you want JBOD SSDs, then the Promise J4 (J=JBOD, R=RAID in their nomenclature) or the Black Magic box being reviewed by member propower may be your best choices.

I know I am in the weeds as far as users go but

- I use JBOD with 2 or three drives active at a time (no TB waste for me)
- I had a recording drive and an audio samples drive on USB3 and had some CPU errors. After moving them to the Multidock on TB - no more errors. Same drives - same everything... USB3 is great for archive or moving data - it is not in my use scenario anymore for Pro Audio. So... even though JBOD - TB is like having the drives on the PCIe bus - USB3 isn't... (just in case that matters) :)

It seems like that BM product is a great fit for you. The Promise J4 was another option, though not as convenient... Did you consider that at all?

Yep - has internal fan though and at this time you can not boot from it. A lot cheaper though. I sort of like being able to easily swap discs and I have plenty of rack mount spaces (many would not)....
