Exactly it’s an enthusiast forum.

Is this not the place for me to ask these questions? I think it is!

I am going to try the Shortcuts automation based on battery level. Sounds like there is no good definitive info so I will try it.

i was using a samsung qi wireless charger for my iphone x, and for 3 years , still has 96% left. the problem is i got the dreaded expanding battery which warped my screen, so i got the iphone 12. but im wondering if this type of charging caused this issue? for now im using a wired 5w charger for my iphone 12

Wow that’s weird maybe just a defect in your particular iPhone.

Since my MBP 16" gets warm, I do this.

I have a 100W USB C adapter that is on a WEMO outlet that turns on for 10 hours during the day and then turns off until the next day.

Keeps the heating of the MBP to a minimum even with a laptop cooling fan pad I use w/ external Apple Thunderbolt display....
Try out Aldente for macbooks. It lets you limit the max charge to any percentage you want. I.e. you can set it to stop charging when the battery reaches 70%. I wish there was a similar app for iOS.

Another question: is it theoretically better to never let the phone charge to 100%, or periodically one should charge to 100%?

I'm curious, what shortcuts automation? Do tell...

yea i dunno, if it wasnt for my screen popping off, i would have kept the iphone x, it was still running great, and good battery health. I'm just wondering if using the qi charger all these years, caused this problem. so for now, will try to use the 5w wired to see if it prevents this problem. It did give me an excuse to by the iphone 12 pro though. I'm happy with it.

All niche, but an interesting discussion. My iPhone 11 Pro Max was at 96% battery health after a year of overnight slow wireless charging (a Mobie, 5W or 7.5W?)

I trust in optimised charging function, but it feels wrong to let it sit there cooking more than is necessary. I'm also not that keen on fast charging, fortunately rarely necessary on my own personal schedule.

Finally received my homekit smart outlet today and I set it up in automation to cut off power past 80 percent battery capacity. Testing confirmed it stops at the level of 81%.

However one problem there with automation was that after the power is cut off, it stays off (obviously) so when I need to plug it back next time, I’d have to manually turn on the smart outlet via “Home” since it’s shut off from last time via automation.

So, what I did there is that I created another automation to turn on the outlet when my iPhone battery reaches below 75% so that the charging brick would be on and ready to charge whenever I need to use it again. All via Apple 5w charger.

Niche as mentioned and unnecessary for most however I am interested in the outcome if I can keep this strategy for longer periods.

One interesting graph about an unrelated product but related to the subject and this was actually what I was planning to do, only via automations and I believe I did it now.

This is a great. I’m working from home so this is interesting to do. 80% battery. Which smart plug did you use?

Since owning a Tesla, i have a habit of charging my devices to around 80%. Working from home also make it possible, sometimes i don’t even charge overnight and charge during the day instead

I know working from home I charge to 50% but I think it’s screwing up my bms estimaged range. Before I used to charge 80% to 90% for my commute.

It did on mine as well, I had to drain my battery to below 5% and do a full charge a couple of time and display range starting to coming back and now i charge it to 90% all time

I used this one;

VOCOlinc Smart Plug Mini Siri WiFi Outlet Socket Works with HomeKit (iOS13+) Alexa Google Assistant Nest Hub Voice Control Remote Access Timer No Hub Required 15A 1800W 2.4GHz Smartbar (2PACK) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NJRS8TX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_o-4OFbG1ZNFGR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Is there a way in the Shortcuts app to detect if the phone is charging? I know there is if it is put on the charger, but I want to detect if it is on the charger at a given point in time.

Using a Programable timer over night as suggested by the OP is absolutely THE BEST WAY to charge any Lithium ion battery over night.
All the naysayers dont know what they're talking about.
There's zero downside to doing it and only upside / longer lived battery health.

Its easier on the battery to charge it to 75% than 50%. Constant under charging creates problems of its own.

I tried this method but got fed up of constantly changing schedules, my routine is all over the place so there is no way the phone can know. All apple need to do is add a manual toggle so I can limit it to 80% until a set time, or better still just limit it to 80% manually, 80% lasts me all day anyway

You guys are overthinking this way to much. Just charge your phone. Your phone will maintain your battery. I don’t let mine go under 25, and if I need a top up I don’t let it go past 85 if I am going to keep using it. And I charge overnight. If you have a small battery it’s going to wear no matter what you do, and it will usually happen before a big one starts to wear. My phone is 9 months old battery still at 100, my wife’s new se is 6 months old and has been at 98 for 2 months. I’ve had 3 7s and all of them within 6 months dropped a couple percent. The best thing you can do for your battery is just use it. If you have AppleCare use it for a new battery, if not a new battery replacement is not expensive at all. Keep using an old battery and you get threads the complain about their battery puffing and wrecking their screen, and then get mad at apple 3 years after they bought it. Not pointing fingers. Just sayin..

I am toying with the idea of using a homekit outlet to control my overnight charging. Disable the outlet a couple hours after I go to sleep and turn back on maybe 1 hour before I get up. Any thoughts as to whether or not this would maintain battery health longer, or hurt it instead?
My honest answer: I have no idea.
My heart felt answer: I trust that Apple battery / recharge circuit engineers know how to properly charge a device better than I could with an off switch.

Just keep the device updated to latest iOS and charge it overnight. I have used a Morphie Wireless charger for my iPhoneX since the device came out. Current battery health at 92%.

I believe the secret to long battery life is staying in the sweet spot as much as possible. Keep it above 20% ( basically think, 20% = 0% ) as much as possible. If you are catching 20% on a daily basis, carry a power bank. I do not follow this one, but keep the max charge below 80% ( this is why the devices slow charge when approaching max, Apple engineers doing their magic ).

Let me repeat for the newly joined that I started this thread based on curiosity, not worry. I also enjoy the experimentation and implementation aspects of doing this. It is FUN to try this and see what happens.

I picked up this one:

I have set it to turn on every day at 5 AM and automatically turn off at 9 AM since I work starting from 9 AM. And will just set the phone on the MagSafe overnight. I do have coconut battery which I do have a license so I can see the results wirelessly. So once I see that it's fully charged, I just take it off my MagSafe, which is plugged into the WEBO Smart Plug.

I haven't fully thought it all through yet, but I'll probably try using a personal automation to turn off the charger when battery level exceeds 80%. I'll then set a standard automation to ensure the charger (outlet) is enabled in the morning and just before I typically go to sleep, to cover those cases where I charged up elsewhere. I'm sure it'll take some fine tuning.
