Looks good!
Thank you good man. Appreciate your time and help. I love the automations, and you can build some monsters there if you really want hahaha

I’m a professional driver. So, I also added location to my Wemo plug since I don’t want it to go off while I’m not home anyway.

when I’m at work I have automations set to send me notification with sound and vibration if charging is above 75% to unplug the charger in my truck, and one for when the batter drops below 25% to send me notification to start charging the phone. That way I don’t go extremes low or constant charging while driving.

One more question. When you are home and once you leave in the morning and unplug your phone from charger etc.
Do you have a automation set for your smart plug to turn ON at certain time in the evening so you can plug your phone and charge it? Or do you do it manually on the plug?

I have a personal automation that will re-enable the charger whenever battery level drops below 70%. So I really don’t ever need to think about the charger being on at a time of day. It is on when ‘needed’.

And I like your idea about notifications. I have the same for 100% and below 20%, for those times when I may be charging away from home like in your scenario. I think I am using 5 vibrates

@Paco II, thanks for the explanation. I changed my automation to charge for an hour at 5 AM using your method. Since I’m going with 24hr format, I just changed the date format to HH and it worked without the extra lines.

With this new found (for me) if/else statements, I wonder if there's a way to have the iPhone and iPad share the same smart plug. So that when I plug the iPad into it, it'll also automatically stop at 80% as well.... I'm gonna let that marinate in the brain for a minute.

Does anyone know how the algorithm to finish charging the device is calculated? I just noticed that my device is scheduled to finish charging by 3am but it always used to say by 6:30am. My alarm is the same and phone usage relatively too.

edit: I just realized that is still charging past 80%, guess ima chalk it up as a bug.

I’m relaying enjoying this automations. Finally a piece of mind without worrying to leave the phone plugged it overnight. Also, I had so far zero drop in percentage over night. Phone gets charge to 75%. Then at 9 am I have another 30 min of charging which brings it to about 83%. Very cool. Thanks for sharing guys.

I don't get this thread at all. I don't understand why anyone would go through all this trouble just to extend the battery's life a bit longer? I've always plugged in my phone at night and unplug it in the morning. Never had an issue as I got better things to do than worry about the battery's health.

Those of us participating in this thread are having fun with this. It’s not about worry or issues. It’s about learning and discovery and having fun with automations. If you’ve got better things to do, please, go do them!

In my experience, over the course of 2 years with my light usage it doesn't really matter. However, if you keep your phone a lot longer than this or use it harder, then keeping your battery between 80-40% is really going to start showing its benefits then. I've lost up to 6% in two years. I imagine my batteries would have done a lot better had I done the 40-80.

I do this manually as I don't have any automation (smart outlets) yet.

thanks for sharing this data.. I set my minimum to trigger notification if my battery falls below 40% to charge it... will see how that works.

I keep getting an "unexpected error has occurred" and my automation doesn't work. Although, when I test it from the automation itself, works like a dream. I even have added different ones at 80, 85, and 90%. It's your basic, when level reaches above X, turn off. Anyone have any clue what I could do to fix this? I've reset the plug and everything to do with HomeKit numerous times.

Can you share a screenshot of your script?

I’ve tried basically every combination where it’s just a simple turn off to the set to the whatever, think I found 3 different ways to turn it off, but none really worked. Reset it and now just using the default way.

Hummm. I’ve never tried this without having a home hub. I wonder if that could be part of the issue.

Joining the over-worrying-battery-health party 😁

I set automations to give me notification when battery falls below 25% and raises above 80%.
Charging with 5W Apple cable charger only, maybe very occasional 10W / 18W cable here and there when needed.
Also set a secondary notification when battery raises above 95% when I need more juice for the day.
I wouldn’t go as far as keeping on shorter battery cycle such as 40-75%, that would drive me nuts for using my 12 mini so short of time in between.
Although the temptation of using Qi and even MagSafe wireless chargers is so strong! 😄
But I even notice the 10W and even more the 18W charger gives my Mini very warm temperature that worries me, I imagine wireless charging would done worse heat.

Let see on December this year.

Previously I had my iPhone 6 with no rules charging method and it last me 4 years before the battery went down to 83% battery health and started to make the performance getting very slow.
Had new battery replacement (non Apple authorized) that last me 2 years before went down to 91% battery health with avoiding below 20% charging more often.
The iPhone 6 was charged using 5W and 10W bricks, alternately (no warm ups when using 10W charger, probably the 6 only takes lesser than 10W).

Most technology comes with a give back
If you want rapid charging day after day then the battery health will diminish quicker
Charging with a battery charger larger than 20w will also effect battery health
Third party Battery chargers may decrease battery life
But battery replacements are quick and cheap why should U not do what you want

Not every country has an Apple Store.
Non authorized battery replacement and repair service also known to have more faulty risks, at least in my country.
Also, doing battery self maintenance and learning how to preserve battery health is also doing what we want.

Well, I jailbroke my old iPhone last night so I could enable the HomeKit hub option, and so far it's working like a charm. We'll see if it keeps up, but so far so good.

For those following this thread, how’s your battery health looking?

My day 1 iPhone 12 Pro is at 100% battery health from limiting daily charge to 80%.

This general guideline is based on lithium ion 18650 battery packs:

You can do over 40,000 charge/discharge cycles when going from 30% to 70% only.
Or 35,000 charge/discharge cycles from 20% to 80%.
Or 28,000 cycles from 10% to 90%;
Or 15,000 cycles from 8% to 92%,
Or 7,500 cylces from 6% to 94%, and the capacity reduction goes faster and faster, finally reaching 500 cycles when recharging from 0% to 100%."

"GM limits the cycle from 17% to 80% of energy storage levels for the Volt. Nissan limits maximum charge level of the LEAF to 90% (4,15V). Tesla invites owners to limit the maximum load to 90%, and recommends avoiding deep depletion of the battery pack."
