I am really sick and tired of hearing about the plight of the poor, starving developer. I am also sick and tired of having the same starving developers call the rest of us cheap and entitled. I buy my software, I don't want to rent it.

Write better software, innovate and have a cash flow gameplan.

I am going to again tell my tale of MS Office. I bought Office 2007 and still use it on my PC. This does NOT make me cheap! I just have literally ZERO reasons to upgrade. If Microsoft doesn't innovate why would I upgrade? They know damn well that the Office Suite is for the most part a static product, IMHO the average user has not seen a worthwhile, needed or game changing feature in a new version in a VERY long time. Microsoft knows this and says "how can I FORCE people to upgrade?" we will cut off security support for the old versions (which is BS as they are fixing their exploits in their own poor coding) and make the only new standalone versions have way less functionality and a high cost as compared to our subscription model. Oh and tie it to some cloud support that most people probably don't want anyway.

How about this... if you INNOVATE and offer users something they want and don't have they will upgrade/buy.
I agree my use of MSoffice was almost exclusively at work. Once i retired I had no need for it. I just need basic functionality Apples suite does good enough for me. I definitely do not need to pay a monthly fee to use it.

Well, perhaps you chose the wrong profession, I hear the trades are hiring, perhaps you can learn to plumb?

#learntoplumb
Plumbers, like every profession, have all my respect. And they should have yours too. But this is off topic.

This discussion is between two points of view:
- customers who are cheap because the app store prices are going down and down
- developers for whom it's difficult because there are too many low quality apps on the store, making it difficult for the good apps to be seens. And also because of the concurrency of cheap laber country, as icanhazmac said

There are thus 2 problems (but, like every other problem in the world, they come from stupid people):
- customers expect to be treated like a king because they paid 2$
- developers who totally exaggerate with their subscriptions for poor quality apps

Don't be extremist my friend, the world does not need that, especially in these times.

Yep.

It's easy to forget that people we'd be fine associating with in the real world are also participating in the conversation. You might actually know a developer who deserves to be paid for their work, or a customer who is able to recognize the value of someone else's work regardless of its nature, and compensate for it accordingly. They might even be honest, polite and informed people in general, not just good examples of someone in their role in this scenario.

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know someone like that. Not because it means their life sucks, but because these are positive influences they're not learning from and could draw on when faced with examples to the opposite. I mean, perceived idiots are abundant. What people need more in their lives are positive examples.

They absolutely do which is why I used them in my example, if that wasn't clear my apologies.

Agreed as well with subs just for the sake of subs. Aside from MS Office, which is my favorite example, I'll throw in all of the camera folks that use cloud storage as the way to subsidize their hardware. I wouldn't care so much IF they offered a local storage option but of course they don't. Followed by those that hold the data hostage in the cloud as a way to justify the sub.

Anyway, apologies @yellow8 if my post seemed directed at you personally, its just frustration with the changing landscape of software. As much as possible I vote with my $$ and you will find $40 apps on my systems but no lame subscriptions.

Well thank God we live in a capitalistic society. There are free apps, free apps with advertisement, single payment apps, and subscription apps. People can choose what they want, and if what they want doesn’t exist, they can choose to live without, or spend their time creating their own app, or hiring someone $1000’s to create it.

People are complaining like they don’t have choice, when there is a myriad of choice out there for nearly everyones needs, many of which are free.

Vote with your $$$, that’s how capitalism works. The problem you face, is whatever way you vote, whether on grounds of morals, ethics, virtues, or values, is that there are other people casting their $$$ vote in opposition to yours. The subscription model could have died if people refused to pay, and yet it has thrived because enough people are willing to pay, whatever their reasons may be.

The thing is I’m not even sure what all this complaining does to make things better, it is just vain frustration. Businesses are always going to choose the most profitable business model in their time for them to succeed in their given market, and in the last decade of the digital world, a lot of this seems to be either the subscription model or freemium model.

The Fantastical fiasco is exactly why I jaibreak. I can easily hide the nag to update to Fantastical 3.0 on my iPhone.

I will never update my iPad or Mac Fantasticals. So my Fantastical experience continues regardless of Flexbit shenanigans.
