I don’t think Apple will start fragmenting the iPad line until sales decline.
It's not fragmenting.

That's small thinking... it's enhancing and offering yet another opportunity for Apple to expand their already vast income stream... :)

After all, I already have an iPad.

With the advent of the 7" I'm sure Apple will be happy to take my money and sell me a second one.

No one but Apple knows for sure what will be released and what won't, but taking an Analyst prediction as facts is as reliable as wikipedia. Sure, some of what is said is correct, but most of it is just a rehash of what has been said on the internet compiled together in one neat place.

Now, lets say this article is true, at what price point can Apple sell a smaller iPad without cannibalizing the iPod touch sales ($229/$299/$399), Apple's best selling iPod and iOS device. But if Apple really cared about competition, they would have lowered the price of the White MacBook down from $999 when Microsoft ran their Laptop Hunter ad campaign, and they would not have raised the Mac Mini up $100 back in July.

Apple has said it the past that they prefer Quality vs Quantity.

9.7 seems about perfect for me. And as someone mentioned earlier, if I want smaller I'll use my phone. Outside of weight, and the iPad is not heavy unless you're a little girl, what works better on a 7 inch screen over a 9.7 inch screen? I can't think of a thing.

well my opinion doesnt matter to what steve jobs does but i think a 7 inch ipad is high on his list. including phasing out the 10 inch ipad for upcoming 12 inch macbook air.

 So they are going to phase out one of their most successful products ever for a replacement for a semi-dud product (MBA).

And yes, I've owned a MBA. It really has no place in the lineup anymore and I don't see simply a better execution of it causing them to drop the current iPad form factor.

Really, you 7" guys are smoking something serious. There is no way they are going to be canceling the 9.7" form factor less than a year after shipping it and selling millions of the devices.

Huh? lol did you even read what you wrote... what on earth would make anyone think Apple would phase out what has become a huge success for a product (MBA) that is more or less a niche product they haven't bothered updating in 18 months? Sorry. Try again.

I don't doubt Apple could release a 7" iPad, but considering they just contracted out to another screen manufacturer to add capacity to meet demand of the current iPad, it won't be going away anytime soon. The MBA is not in the same class, category or price range of the iPad. No one is going to say "oh hell, the iPad is gone, I guess I'll drop another $1000+ and buy the MBA" really? Is there no common sense left in this world...

I'm really enjoying Steve's 9.7"

If he only gave me 7" I would not be so satisfied.

I personally think I could take 12" and that would make me very happy.

I have my fingers crossed, as that extra 2" would make all the difference for me.

:D

But to the guy who said they would phase out the 9.7" iPad for a 12" MBA: Seriously? The MBA is way overpriced just for the convenience of being thin. Like a few others have said, I believe the MBA is a dying product now because of the iPad. The MBA was Apple's netbook and they killed it. Anyone who needs serious computing power can just get the 13" MBP for cheaper than a MBA and it's not that much thicker. But for around the same weight and thickness of a MBA you can get an iPad and do most of the things that the MBA was capable of at a fraction of the price.

Actually, I see uses for both... There's certainly a good amount of overlap, but there are major differences as well..

Most importantly, being able to run full OSX applications like MS Word. While, yes, you can edit Office files on an iPad, it's not stellat, and certainly not something you're going to do all day every day. You CAN do that on an Air.

For business users, the Air is probably going to be the better choice (at least for an exec, not powerful enough for doing serious development or heavy lifting work.)

I want a 7" as my portable because:

These are the Mac products I own now:
1) 2006 MacPro
2) Late 2009 Macbook Pro
3) 4th Generation iPod Nano

One is my 'mothership' where I dump large files;
one is my academic workbook where I do all my writing;
and one is my music/lecture

This is what I would like to own after I get my Ph.D. in four years

1) Mac Mini if I don't keep my 2006 Mac Pro
2) Macbook Air
3) a 7" iPad: for reading articles, for listening to music/lectures and making voice notes on the go.

I will still want a laptop; but I want a portable device that will replace the limited functionality of the iPod Nano--a 7" iPad. Current iPad too big too pull conveniently to change music or things.

The MBA will become more powerful and retain its size. I would buy it if it was just a LITTLE more powerful and came with a larger hard drive size--which will be possible in a few years time.

I am an academic would has little need for 2 USB ports, firewire port, and DVD slot. I think there are a lot of people who are the same

Dead on - the iPad is a great consumption device with some allures to production, but no tablet will ever be as efficient as a laptop or full computer for production. The MBA is perfect for those that deal with lots of data (spreadsheets, wordprocessing etc). But if you need Firewire and lots of peripherals, then chances are you will need something with a lot more power than what an ultra slim laptop can provide.

Unfortunately most consumers cannot distinguish between what they want and what they need and often buy something woefully inadequate "coz it looks nice" or gives them status.

But is the $1,400 and $1,700 price tag really worth it to have a lighter fully capable OS. You still have to carry an external DVD drive for the air. Personally I cannot justify that cost and would rather have a complete all in one laptop like the 13" mbp for less. I never really got the point of the Air anyway. Laptops aren't that heavy to begin with and their mbp line is already super thin as it is. How much space are you really saving?

Dream on. Nay.

If you keep guessing you might get a minor detail right, but doesn't mean you are right. Not at all.

Excellent post... Well thought out setup ... :)

Unless the Ph.D. is in clairvoyance a 4-year plan for technology is a little misguided. Who can possibly anticipate what will be available or in use 4 years from now?

The MBA is ALMOST what I need. The only reason I didn't get it was it might be a little weak for some music recording/field recording (am in music studies).
But for people who make a living writing reports and articles, the MBA is perfect NOW. I assume in about 4 years, should be more than enough for people like me.

I agree, I shouldn't complain about the weight of MBP, but every time I go to the Apple store and lift that Air, it is very tempting to get.

Anyways, this post is about the iPad, so what I'm saying is that the iPad is not good for people who write for a living, so the iPad would not eat into laptop sales. And I want a 7" one to make easier note-taking on the go and recording interviews in the field.

Sounds like your awareness of current technologies usefulness, is severely limited.

What's works for the stated purpose today, will serve equally as well in a few years time.

If your narrow minded viewpoint was correct, every fortune 500 company in America would have triple it's annual expense for IT.

I personally love the current size of the iPad. I thought it would be too big but its just right for browsing the web and that. Having said that it is my personal opinion and if the demand for a 7" iPad is big enough then so be it.

I just hope if they were to do that then they keep the current size as well as the 7".

"... a 7-inch iPad that will have front and rear facing videocameras"

-.-

Good thing it's from a blog.
