But is the $1,400 and $1,700 price tag really worth it to have a lighter fully capable OS. You still have to carry an external DVD drive for the air. Personally I cannot justify that cost and would rather have a complete all in one laptop like the 13" mbp for less. I never really got the point of the Air anyway. Laptops aren't that heavy to begin with and their mbp line is already super thin as it is. How much space are you really saving?

It depends on personal use. For those who are out and about all day with a laptop, it would make a large difference. Also, I'm sure that many MBA users would just leave the external DVD drive at home seeing as how CDs and DVDs nowadays are usually used only for music and movies and the odd software installation, but most data is pretty much transferred online or via USB.

If they do start selling a 7" ipad .. it will sell along with the 9" ipad
Both will exist at the same time just like the ipod has multiple size (ipod touch version and a nano version)

Apple will just have more choice then the competition with tablets, and more people will jump aboard the apple wagon.

Yeah, because MacRumors has never posted incorrect information before.

What does it matter anyhow? I think that the size of the iPad works quite well and I'm not at all interested in a 7-inch device. I also don't think Apple would be either, because the iPod Touch pricing and the iPad pricing is pretty damn close as-it-is, so I don't see where a 7-inch device fits into the pricing model.

Every new Apple product has to make sense for Apple. That means not cannibalizing sales of other Apple products. For Apple to release a 7" tablet with the same performance as the current model and with enhanced resolution makes little sense if it's just going to be a somewhat smaller yet identical device at a lower price point. Joe consumer will say "why buy a $499 iPad when I can get the 7" with similar performance AND a camera for $449." While it may lure buyers from other segments it will also lure them from Apple.

I'm not saying Apple shouldn't try to keep competitive (or that it won't respond to real competition in the marketplace), it's just that all this speculation deals with what people are aware of today while Apple needs to be concerned with tomorrow.

My guess on iPad pricing structure

This is my guess on the iPad pricing structure. I'm thinking that if Apple starts pricing at $429, it doesn't compete directly with the 64GB iPod Touch, but can be used as a selling point. You know the lines they use..."I see you're looking at the iPad as well as the iPod Touch...well, for $30 more..."

16GB WiFi 7" - $429
16GB WiFi 10" - $499
16GB 3G 7" - $559
16GB 3G 10" - $629

32GB WiFi 7" - $529
32GB WiFi 10" - $599
32GB 3G 7" - $659
32GB 3G 10" - $729

64GB WiFi 7" - $629
64GB WiFi 10" - $699
64GB 3G 7" - $759
64GB 3g 10" - $829

Oh goodness here we go.

My prediction...... We will see 500 million more posts with people predicting pricing.

:(:(:(:(:(

Also this thread and title are misleading. As it was clear in the OP that the article linked was under the impression there would be only 1 SKU in future ipad revision size wise, that being 7".

Therefore those debunking and pointing out that the linked article was dubious were not necessarily with the opinion that there would not be a 7" ipad, only that it would prob not be the only SKU. That doesn't mean they are naysayers.

You don't have to carry around the DVD drive for the air. Or even purchase one. At home I have the DVD-less Mac Mini server and Air and when I do need a drive I use my Dell PC wirelessly.

I agree partly with your logic on the Air. It probably was more a prototype or concept design for the current Macbook Pro design. It is hard to justify the cost of the thing compared to the Macbook Pro on paper. I like it after using the MBP 17 and wanted to try the other extreme. I take it with me everywhere now and it is my primary Mac. It is fast and light.

I keep forgetting all the bad ass computer set ups people have. My little checking account can't afford all that stuff that I really want. Which is why I have to win the lotto!!

I still say the 7" is a no chance. If they keep the same number of pixels, then all the buttons and other targets are smaller and people will have problems using it. If they change the number of pixels then apps have to be rewritten (this didn't happen with the iPhone 4 since the display was an exact double of the previous one).

It makes absolutely no sense from a logic standpoint. But the OP has proven they aren't interested in facts, just stupid rumors.

I'm still having a tough time seeing the benefits to an iPad with a 7 inch display.

The current iPad is about 12.5 inches diagonally. Knock of 2.7 inches from the screen (9.7 inches - 7 inches), and you would still have a diagonal measurement of around 9.8 inches (12.5 inches - 2.7 inches).

Sure it would be a little easier to carry as it would be smaller. But would there be some negatives such as a shorter battery life and other tradeoffs? I would think so.

As I mentioned before, I'll believe it when I see it.

Please say it isn't true. Current iPad size is way better.

As it previously had been pointen out, this guy's track record is terribly off the mark. Listening to his "analysis" is like playing russian roulette.

You're aguing against a straw-man; I don't think many people here are going to argue that Apple will never introduce a 7" iPad. The rumours definitely point towards the possibility of a smaller iPad.

The real question is whether Apple are going to drop the 10" size and so far we've only got the opinion of one dodgy analyst that says that this is likely.

If Apple is interested in selling iPads to the over 40 crowd they will keep the 9.7" screen size. For us ( I know I am generalizing here) reading the fine print that was so easy to see in our teens - thirties is a real strain to read now. The 9.7: screen is about as small as we want a screen to be (if one is interested in reading ibooks).

Shorter battery life? I don't think so. Apple improves battery life with each new model. I however don't believe they'll add a retina display or one close to it in fact due to the fact that retina display sucks a lot of energy.

16GB WiFi 10" - $499
16GB 3G 7" - $559

64GB WiFi 10" - $699
64GB 3G 7" - $759
64GB 3g 10" - $829

That is one hot mess. If Apple introduces a 7" iPad, I would put my money on it replacing the 16GB model. ie. 7" 16 GB WiFi/3G - $499/$629 and leave the 10" 32GB and 64GB models (with new features like front facing camera, etc.) pricing as is. I suppose they could knock $50 off across the line, but I doubt it.

Just my guess, but it seems more Apple-like to me.

Agree with you that each new model usually brings better battery life.

However, what I was commenting on is the available battery space. If you look at an iPad teardown pic, you will see a majority of the inside is used for the batteries.

If the iPad shrinks to a 7 inch screen, that would be a significant change in the available space for the battery/batteries if they keep the same thickness. Assuming all other is same, except for the smaller display, I believe that battery life would be less than the current version.
