Enable vsync in the game settings.

Hi Edwin,

First of all, thank you for this wonderful port of Tomb Raider!

My new MacBook Pro Retina is capable of running this game on a pretty comfortable framerate (~40 fps average). But is there a way to lock the framerate to 30 fps like it is on consoles?

I do this with all games on the Mac if possible to make the FPS more consistent but i didn't saw an option on TR yet..

Enable vsync in the game settings.

Yes, i was already aware of this. But unfortunately it doesn't always make it an consistent 30 fps because my FPS is alot of times in the 40-45 range.

But this still may be the best option for now, so thanks!

FYI the most complex areas in the game to test the performance is the entering Shanty town. In this area you will notice a massive boost using CoreGL (about double legacy mode on most cards).
I can confirm that. I was precisely at this point of the game when I decided to try the legacy mode. Boy did I quickly switch back to the coreGL mode. :D It was like 10 fps instead of 20-30.
In some Mac/PC tests using a Nvidia 650M the Mac was actually a few fps fasters than the PC in these areas. However in the simpler areas the Windows version can perform better, in general the lower the load the faster Windows runs. In general the Mac and PC should be in a similar ballpark.
Interesting. IMO it's better to improve performance in critical areas. 35 fps instead of 30 make a bigger difference than 100 fps vs 60.

Crashes on Startup - Steam

Hi
I've just purchased the game via Steam and it crashes on startup. I'm not even able to enter the game basically.

Attached is the crash report.

I've a late 2012 iMac Intel Core i5, 3.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX, running latest OSX...

What could be the problem???

Edwin, is there any way to show FPS in the game itself, as opposed to the benchmark?

Quartz debug, which is a developer tool, can show fps if you play in windowed mode. It has a framemetter. I don't know of any other OS X app that would report fps.

I just got my NVidia 3D Vision 2 kit in the mail today, and I thought this game was beautiful in 2D... but I can't explain in words how gorgeous this game is in 3D... with ultra settings... TressFX on... especially on 3 monitors tri-surround. Add a good sound system... and an controller with rumble affects to enhance the sound effects... I'm totally immersed in this game.

I've read threads where mac users could use NVidia's 3D Vision with a 120hz monitors/projectors... so I think it's possible. It's absolutely beautiful and amazing in 3D... and I guarantee you will say the same if you experienced it for yourself. The game took a hit on FPS when I run the benchmark in 3D (min: 44.7, max: 62.3, avg: 54.6), but it's still plays smooth at that frame rate... and worth the hit to play with depth perception. Lara has some curves on her... which is more pronounced compared to her 2D counterpart. :p

EH ? Tomb Raider has always been 3D, the first Tomb Raiders where in 3D but not as well done as 3D is these days with all the new technology.

2D is flat as most cartoons are, and Tomb Raider has never been done in that style.

this might help, it might not. i had similar before and Edwin told me to delete the folder named com.plausiblelabs.crashreporter and associated cache files found within library/caches/com.feralinteractive.tombraider

Thanks... that's what I meant. I was talking more of stereoscopic 3D vision. It doesn't even compare to the old anaglyph 3D. Stereoscopic 3D vision works really well of how games are made today... and it was done very well for this game. For example, the top side angle as Lara walks across a chasm on a fallen tree with the waterfall on one side and cliff side on the other looks even more dramatic... how you look up at the rain, and see you realistic drops splashing on the screen... seeing smoke fumes crossing over Lara as she sits at the camp fires. All the little details in this game really makes a difference. Definitely worth playing in Stereoscopic 3D.

Well I just finished the game today! Mt hat is off to Edwin, and the folks at Feral. Stellar port!

I've every part of it recorded, so if some folks feel like watching a silly irishman playing you can knock yourselves out.

Channel link in the description.

I'm also going to burn in my new MP when it arrives to see how the D700's handle this game.

It did not work...the game still crashes on startup.....thats really annoying....

Anyone have ideas?

I've contacted the Feral Interactive support but still no answer.....

If it persist...steam will refund??

Is it possible to get the rumble effects going with a PS3 controller, or are you using a different (xbox, made-for-PC) type controller?
The main thing that's missing for me in the Mac version is rumble on my PS3 controller. But then, It's also much easier for me to use the controller wireless instead of through USB on Mac. So it's a bit of a trade at the moment.
Thanks!

Got this during the Steam holiday sale for $7.50. Planned on playing it through Winetricks or Bootcamp. It was a pleasant surprise to see this popping up in Steam on OS X. :)

I guess Valve has structured its game licensing deals better these days. If Mac versions of recent games are released, they pretty much always get added to SteamPlay is my experience. A few years ago, it was much more hit-and-miss (e.g., I got the PC versions for Rome Total War, Europa Universalis III Complete (all expansions) and Bioshock, but these were not added to SteamPlay, despite all content being available for Mac as well).

I know it is frustrating and it is hard to be patient when you are wanting to play but give them some more time. Feral is known for good support. I don't think you will need to be looking into refunds on Steam.

Hang in there for now. It'll be worth the wait when they help you get it running.

I'm using a wireless Xbox controller... and I play on a PC. I just post here because I like the game... and happy that mac owners can enjoy it too.

As for the PS dualshock controller rumble motors, I'm not sure... but there is a thread of someone who made or making an app that enables DualShock controller mapping... and also supports rumble motors and the touchpad on the DualShock 4.

Maybe it could work? I don't know...

Some more benchmarks, specs in sig. Everything Maxed, 1920 x 1200, vsync off for benchmarking. First Bench is on 10.9.1, seconds bench on 10.9.1 using beta Nvidia drivers b07. Using Steam.

This can have quite a performance hit on the game when running so I'd usually recommend you only use it to test things and not play with it turned on all the time.

Anyone got this running through Steam yet?

It's been live on Steam for a week now. A few hackintoshes aside the game has not had any major issues. We have seen a couple of crash on launch issues we are tracking down but they point to OS setup issues as they are not reproducible on identical hardware (both other gamers and at Feral's QA). If someone does have a problem contact us, the more clues people send in we can isolate what is unique about their OS/User accounts.

email Feral support and we can look into it.

I'm currently in contact with Feral Support and they're investigating. As it seems it could be linked to Quicktime as the game crashes on the opening video.

I know it doesn't help you but it runs great here on the same hardware as you have which means this issue is solvable. I know the team are investigating and will hopefully find the reason your Mac has a problem soon.

Thanks a lot Edwin! Hopefully you and your team will be able to find the solution quickly.

BTW the support team is very kind and proactive....thanks!

I just bought the game from Steam, and wanted to say you guys did an awesome job porting the game.
The graphics looks great, easily the best graphics on a mac game to date, also very smooth, no issues here. The game doesn't feel like a port at all, graphics are gorgeous, and everything is so smooth! I ran the benchmark and my average FPS is in the 50's, this is with everything maxed out in the graphics menu.

Mac Pro 5,1
6-Core Intel Xeon W3680 3.33Ghz
12GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition

I didn't realize that the Mac version had been released. Went back to look at Steam and there it was! Thanks for the port. Now I can play at work on my Mac when no one is around :p

Just wanted to say that the port is great. Not quite as good as on windows but it's still great. This is how all Mac games should play. I have the 680MX iMac from last gen and most games are a slideshow in OSX.
