1. I am so grateful that someone at apple saw through the BS spec sheet battle and proposed a step back from the fray long enough to realize that the answer for a portable "go to" device was already right in front of them. I work with a macbook as my main computer and a pc laptop as my secondary. They never leave the house. I do not need all that power every minute of the day. If I need it I will bring it. I do not picture a time where I am sitting on a bus or bench and think to my self "I need to make a spread sheet" or "I need to edit a movie here right now on a park bench"...I do not feel that I am in the minority here.(Simplicity)

2. Right after the keynote I envisioned the possible expansion of the OS through apps to suite the individual user rather than an expensive buffet style one fits all offering. I saw this product producing jobs and creating wealth in this country (US). I believe this is something we are in desperate need of after such a sweltering recession. If at the end of the day Apple only succeeded in spawning the innovation of its competitors I will be happy. (Expansion/Innovation)

3. My job (Realtor) requires that I be as mobile as possible. I am in desperate need of a device that is small enough to fit in my folio and will be able to access the MLS and reports everywhere I go. (I don't need a $1200+ tank or a 3 hour battery life netbook) {Portability.}

as grad student I might use to read scientific journals on pdf, presentations..and other academic purposes too.. but that is secondary

Great Internet Browsing Experience while relaxing.

Applications

Great for traveling/lounging

1 - Portability (form factor)
2 - Lounging/Casual useI don't need a MB which is overkill. This is perfect in between.
3 - Notetaking and academic stuff.

1. I'll be using it to read papers my students submit to me (Pages), email assignments (Mail), keep track of grades (Numbers), make presentations during lectures (Keynote), and keep track of my personal schedule (iCal).

2. When I'm not working I'll be using it for reading the four or five forums I read, as well as checking out ComicAgg.com, Engadget, Gizmodo, and other websites.

3. Continue to expand my investment in the Apple digital media ecosystem. Say what you might about the closed nature of Apple's digital content, but I know what I buy on my desktop will play on my AppleTV, iPod, iPad, and all other iTunes equipped devices.

When I bought my MBP, I thought I'd be constantly using it for a million multimedia projects. Aside from being a teacher, I also do some photography and videography. I've only used my laptop to edit photos on location twice, and both times were to adjust things like saturation or exposure. It was nice, but I always do intensive editing of video and photos at home. My MBP is either getting sold or getting a nice stand to make it my home theater machine. Everything else I do with it can be done by an iPad, and I can cancel my overpriced 3G service and not have to carry a dongle for wireless data.

1. Meetings: I'm in the 4-5 hrs/day. I hate handwriting notes because I'm unorganized. I hate typing because I'm always the only one. Plus I can check my email when things get boring.

2. Heft: I carry an MBA and an MBP (not at the same time). They're the only reason I carry a briefcase, as I'm paperless. I'd much rather carry a pen in my pocket and iPad in my hand.

3. I'm a sucker.

1. I don't own an iPhone or Touch, just an iMac.

2. My kids are always on my iMac.

3. It would make me cooler if I had one.

1. Note taking. This is the reason I'm getting a smaller device at all, and NOT the reason I am getting an iPad. I have a 17", and taking it on the subway for lectures is something my shoulders and co-passengers will not miss.
2. Video in bed. **** yeah!
3. Games!!! This is going to be a kick-ass platform for casual games, which I am just getting into after a long game-free period.

Form Factor - I agree with others that the form factor is perfect for casual use. I plan to use mine in the living room while watching TV mainly.

Don't Have a Laptop - I sold my MacBook a little while back, so with only my iMac and my iPhone, I kind of want to have a device that I can carry around that has a little bit more power than my iPhone.

The Apps - I'm really looking forward to using the redesigned Apps that Apple made for the iPad, but more importantly the potential for some really great apps coming from the App Store.

Same :D

Why are people saying form factor as in lying in bed, on the couch. A laptop is perfect for both. Lying in bed, you put the laptop on your chest. You're not holding it at all really, it's sitting on you. Have you ever held a book for hours on end? You have to switch hands etc. Now have you ever held a kilogram of weight over your head whilst lying down? I don't think it will be as useable in bed as a laptop. And certainly not any easier as you have to hold the thing.

Sitting in bed maybe, but not lying down.

My 3 reasons:

• Travel: Email, web browsing and minor document review (PDF, a few text documents) are all I usually need when traveling. Bonus is the ability to edit & present Keynote presentations directly off the iPad via the VGA adapter.

• Web-surfing on the sofa: I actually find myself using my iPod touch to read my favorite websites. Easy to pick up and put down, don't have to try to balance it on my lap when the wife/kids/dog/cat want to sit with me...

• eBooks: Thought about getting a Kindle, but never did since its PDF capabilities are horrible. While either device will do books, I also read a lot of scientific journal articles - which come to me as fully-formatted PDFs - and are virtually impossible to display on the Kindle (I've tried). However, they show up perfectly on my iPod touch and iPhone. The iPad will make it a joy to carry around multiple articles and keep up with my reading.

Bonus reason: Movies. I sometimes will watch a movie in bed with headphones while my wife sleeps. Laptop works fine in this respect, but the iPad's longer-lasting battery and (presumably) cooler operating temperature will make movie watching quite comfortable.

Not getting one. Here are ten reasons you SHOULD, though.

1. The name is so appealing.
2. Apple makes it.
3. It comes in white.
4. Solid Aluminum, 1/2" thick and with a curved back it will make a good wedge to prop a heavy door open.
5. You have money to burn.
6. Over 40, you can hold it twice as far away and see/play your iPod Touch games now.
7. You are REALLY curious to see if it will frisbee.
8. You've been looking for an excuse to get a murse.
9. TV celebrities are getting them.
10. It can be used as a rocking stepper.

Enjoy! 4D :)

1. How very Bevis and Butthead, but the name doesn't bother me.
2. Good reason. It'll actually work and I can be on the Internet, right out of the box without anti-virus software and not have it infected with 432 virii.
3. Model T Fords only came in black, your point?
4. "Solid (sic) aluminum"--I think you mean the case is a single piece of aluminum; there are other bits inside there, you know? Great, it'll be durable and far too useful to be relegated to doorstop-dom.
5. No, but I do like to spend my disposable income wisely.
6. Over 40, but not hyperopic (look it up).
7. Not really. Please see reason 5, emphasis on "wisely".
8. I'm female. I don't carry a purse/murse (a nonce word that I hope dies a fiery death soon). I carry a book bag or a messenger bag as occasion/load warrant.
9. Two words: don't care.
10. See point 5 yet again, again with emphasis on "wisely".

"Enjoy"? Why, yes, yes I will, thanks.

I don't think this is a debatable point, because I think it's a matter of personal preference. Not to mention body shapes, gender (um, yeah, no laptop on my chest, thanks), furniture style/configuration, etc.

I'll just have to ask you to trust that I know what is comfortable for me. :)

Now have you ever held a kilogram of weight over your head whilst lying down?

If you really picture people doing this with the iPad, I think it may be more a failure of imagination than anything.

  1. Access To Content - Email, books, magazines, newspapers, video, music, web, photos, youtube, and games all in one slick compact device.
  2. Portability - Kitchen, couch, bed, deck, car, poolside, planes, trains for up to 10 hours.
  3. The Right Tool- For 95% of what people do every day, you don't need a laptop. The iPad interface is elegantly simple and if you know the iPhone you already know the iPad. It's smaller and lighter than any laptop with an "all day" battery life. Perfect for casual users who really only care about the content.

Too bad it lacks flash. Good luck finding a good .mp4/.mov site.

Oh don't worry, there are plenty of sites around providing iPhone/iPod Touch sites. Do you really think WSJ and NPR are the first to provide iPhone optimized sites? The porn industry is the first on any new frontier, any way to make a buck. We have VHS tapes and bluray thanks to porn.

spankwire.com and *******.com are a couple favs of mine...
