1st. It will be a lot lighter than carrying my MacBook Pro with me to work everyday while still providing all the functionality I need.

2nd. It's the best way yet to share photos/videos/PDFs with friends/colleagues in a face to face situation.

3rd. It will provide me an opportunity to acquire inexpensive on-demand 3G coverage. (for a variety of reasons, dumbphone + iPod touch has been the best solution for me.)

Bonus Answer: My wife doesn't want me to get one. :)

1. It's an Apple product
2. Feature wise, not like a netbook or laptop
3. I made a COOL custom case for it

1. To browse the web while lying in bed.

2. Because I am a gadget freak and have got to have my fix.

3. To browse the web while on the go and not have to lug around a laptop or wait for it to boot.

That looks great!! Exactly what I was looking for. That app is going to sell like crazy.

I think they could've done a better job on the interface. Functionality wise it looks good, but I wish they made the interface "feel" nicer, if that makes any sense.

Still some time to spruce it up. :)

I agree, at least the functionality is there. I'm sure a bigger developer will basically make an app with the same utility and nicer interface and features.

1. Travel - As others have mentioned, the iPad makes a good travel companion. I used to have a netbook (Dell Mini 9) which I preferred to travel with than a full sized laptop, but I found myself not using it at all when not travelling. The iPad will work while travelling or not.

2. Utility - For me this item instantly replaces 3 devices (Netbook, iPod Touch, and Kindle). I've already purchased a nano for a pocket music player and will be selling the Touch. I'm going to hold on to the Kindle for at least a couple days after the iPad arrives just to see how I like reading on it. You can say what you want about the Kindle, but its a great e-reader. The netbook has already been sold, but my wife has a trip coming up and she was just mentioning how she will have no way to access the web (not counting her Blackberry), but i'm not sure if I'm going to let her take my iPad yet ;).

3. Games - I really like most of the games on the iPod Touch. However, there were some games that looked great, but i could not enjoy playing them. These games were usually the ones that had d-pad and buttons on the screen. Due to the size of the screen on the Touch, if you have fairly large hands it become difficult to see most of the game because your mitts were covering the screen while playing. The iPad has a chance to improve the game mechanics. Gameloft (i believe it was them) showed an example of this where in there game you could move the buttons where you wanted to accommodate different hands/grips. The screen size and resolution alone should allow you to see more of the game even with on screen d-pad/buttons.

4 Reasons not to buy Ipad

Couple reasons i am waiting.

1.Dose not have a camera (i assume it was left out for rev2)
2.No multi tasking (coming soon i think i heard that when original iphone came out.)
3. 3G models over priced.
4. 16gb entry is just a joke (32g-120g is what it should be)

None the less its an amazing device and cant wait for revision 2. Witch i am almost certain almost all of these issues will be addressed. Now the question is when will it see its refreshing hope it joins the Ipod family but if i have to wait till next year my ipone will have to hold me over.

Though i am sure i will give in and buy one.

I don't think this is a debatable point, because I think it's a matter of personal preference. Not to mention body shapes, gender (um, yeah, no laptop on my chest, thanks), furniture style/configuration, etc.

I'll just have to ask you to trust that I know what is comfortable for me. :)

If you really picture people doing this with the iPad, I think it may be more a failure of imagination than anything.

As a matter of interest do you use a laptop in bed?

People hold books in bed. Doesn't take Albert Einstein and the theory of relativity to imagine people holding a book/ebook reader up.

Over their heads?

Original quote (not mine):

Now have you ever held a kilogram of weight over your head whilst lying down?

I still find it weird that this calls for debate, but I guess I'll bite: I don't hold books up over my head. I usually use a Sony e-Book reader (PRS-700) propped up by its case (if I'm lying on my side, as I usually am), or leaning against a pillow.

But the entire point of my original post was that everyone is different, and that "A laptop is perfect" [for use in bed] was a subjective statement that did not apply to everyone's preferences.

No one else mostly using iPad as a masturbatory aid? I find this hard to believe...

1) replace my laptop for browsing/email ( got desktop for power)
2) apple ecosystem of apps.
3) easy of use and convenient: on instantly, less heat, less heavy, etc

1. 3G internet on the go
2. Looks extremely portable
3. Um, because it looks awesome!

I am an Apple virgin. The only Apple products we have are a couple of iPod shuffles for the kids. I've read on many different sites that the iPad is just an overgrown Touch. Well guess what? Not all of us have iPod Touches! This looks like it will do perfectly for what I want. Currently my web on the go is conducted on my EnV Touch with Verizon. I think this will be a major upgrade in that respect. The lack of a webcam means nothing to me. I have one on my laptop, but never use it. The lack of flash is a little off putting, but maybe I won't be assaulted with the gazillion of flash ads that seem to be so prevalent out there today. That would be a plus! There may be a few things that I won't be able to do because of the lack of flash, but since I will be able to surf anywhere I want wtih this thing, it sort of makes up for it, ha. Anyway, that's just a little backstory of WHY I want this item. I preordered the 32g 3g version. Can't wait for it to get here!:D

Those are good reasons :D

  1. I am a tech nerd and really appreciate Apple products. I feel this will fit in great with my Mac lineup.
  2. I like its versatility. As a graduate student, I can use it for e-books, e-textbooks, journal articles, reading/editing documents/presentations, music, etc. This will be awesome when it comes time to travel and give a talk at a conference.
  3. Most importantly, I am going to car mount this puppy and use it when I storm chase. I am currently finishing writing a custom chasing app. I can't wait to be going after a tornado with this thing showing me crucial data.

1. browsing
2. just want it
3. leaving in may for a 6week study abroad in Italy, and would like it for all the traveling I will be doing there, plus we are visiting many companies (ferrari, ducati, bugatti, etc), so having iwork to do work on the bus rides will be handy.

1. a bigger screen than the iPhone and iPod touch.
2. Apps that will shine on this device.
3. iBookstore.
